Download or read book Snapshots written by Eliot Parker and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each story within Snapshots places the characters in situations where their past behaviors will be changed in a moment that is like a snapshot picture: freezing in time who they are in a moment but facing new challenges that will alter that snapshot and create a new reality. Eudora Welty’s quote “A good snapshot keeps a moment from going away” is a theme that permeates all of the stories in Eliot Parker’s collection of short stories, Snapshots. These stories are set in West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky. In the plots of the stories, the makeup of the characters is more interesting and important than the circumstances that the characters find themselves trying to manage. Each protagonist finds themselves in a complicated set of personal and professional relationships. By their nature, relationships are complicated. The protagonists in these stories are shaped by their backgrounds, life experiences, and expectations of other people. Conflicts arise for these protagonists when decisions and choices made by others alter the expectations and circumstances expected by the protagonists. In each of these stories, the lives, values, and beliefs held by the characters are deconstructed and each of them face a new reality brought on by an experience or situation that forces them to reexamine who they are and who they need to become. Each of these characters occupy a variety of professional spaces: cops, a rich, successful couple, convicted criminals, and others grieving the loss of a loved one and grieving the absence of love.

Download or read book Now Is Then written by Marvin Heiferman and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deceptive in their ease of creation, diminutive size, and sheer abundance, snapshots are often thought of as the most innocent type of photography. But snapshots are complex and willful pictures—premeditated, fussed over, and often predetermined. The postures we adopt, the gestures we pantomime, the exaggerated facial expressions we compose and try to hold for a split second are all meant to express the emotional weight of a certain moment. In a time when digital cameras make photography all too easy, it is fascinating to look back on a day when image making was more deliberate. Now is Then features images from the 1920s through the 1960s, the golden age of snapshot photography. The photos—quirky, elegant, heartbreaking, and heart-warming—both celebrate and question the conventions of snapshot photography. Texts by well known visual culture critics offer fresh perspectives on the snapshots and their power over us. Unlike previous explorations of vernacular photography, Now Is Then takes a step forward to look at the broader cultural impact of snapshots—why we make them, how we use them, why they become relics, and, most importantly, what they reveal about us.
Download or read book TV Snapshots written by Lynn Spigel and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-08 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In TV Snapshots, Lynn Spigel explores snapshots of people posing in front of their television sets in the 1950s through the early 1970s. Like today’s selfies, TV snapshots were a popular photographic practice through which people visualized their lives in an increasingly mediated culture. Drawing on her collection of over 5,000 TV snapshots, Spigel shows that people did not just watch TV: women used the TV set as a backdrop for fashion and glamour poses; people dressed in drag in front of the screen; and in pinup poses, people even turned the TV setting into a space for erotic display. While the television industry promoted on-screen images of white nuclear families in suburban homes, the snapshots depict a broad range of people across racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds that do not always conform to the reigning middle-class nuclear family ideal. Showing how the television set became a central presence in the home that exceeded its mass entertainment function, Spigel highlights how TV snapshots complicate understandings of the significance of television in everyday life.
Download or read book Data Protection written by Preston de Guise and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Data Protection goes beyond the traditional topics including deduplication, continuous availability, snapshots, replication, backup, and recovery, and explores such additional considerations as legal, privacy, and ethical issues. A new model is presented for understanding and planning the various aspects of data protection, which is essential to developing holistic strategies. The second edition also addresses the cloud and the growing adoption of software and function as a service, as well as effectively planning over the lifespan of a workload: what the best mix of traditional and cloud native data protection services might be. Virtualization continues to present new challenges to data protection, and the impact of containerization is examined. The book takes a holistic, business-based approach to data protection. It explains how data protection is a mix of proactive and reactive planning, technology, and activities that allow for data continuity. There are three essential activities that refer to themselves as data protection; while they all overlap in terms of scope and function, each operates as a reasonably self-contained field with its own specialists and domain nomenclature. These three activities are: • Data protection as a storage and recovery activity • Data protection as a security activity • Data protection as a privacy activity These activities are covered in detail, with a focus on how organizations can use them to leverage their IT investments and optimize costs. The book also explains how data protection is becoming an enabler for new processes around data movement and data processing. This book arms readers with information critical for making decisions on how data can be protected against loss in the cloud, on premises, or in a mix of the two. It explains the changing face of recovery in a highly virtualized datacenter and techniques for dealing with big data. Moreover, it presents a model for where data recovery processes can be integrated with IT governance and management in order to achieve the right focus on recoverability across the business. About the Author Preston de Guise has been working with data recovery products for his entire career—designing, implementing, and supporting solutions for governments, universities, and businesses ranging from SMEs to Fortune 500 companies. This broad exposure to industry verticals and business sizes has enabled Preston to understand not only the technical requirements of data protection and recovery, but the management and procedural aspects too.
