Book Make Your Own Convenience Foods

Download or read book Make Your Own Convenience Foods written by Donald R. German and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cost, chemicals, and convenience are the main concerns about food. Food costs are high because of expensive processing, packaging, advertising, spoilage, and pilferage. Harmful food additives are used for food processing. Some occur naturally; others get into food accidentally. Wise shopping and home made food reduces the amount of additives consumed. Home made convenience foods save money and are easy to prepare. Little equipment is needed for home made convenience food; a blender should be the most basic tool. Suggestions and techniques are given for saving food and energy costs. Recipes are included for breads, breakfast foods, yogurt, cheese, lunches, salads, dinners, snacks, beverages, soups, and pet foods. A discussion of natural additives includes suggestions for safe additives, additives to avoid or cut down on, and places to shop for suggested ingredients.

Download or read book The Copycat Grocery Store written by S L Watson and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many reasons to make as many groceries at home as possible. The lack of chemicals and preservatives, financial savings and health benefits. Unless you are 100% self-sufficient, you can't make everything from scratch you purchase from the grocery store. I will give you tips to make those purchased items more economical and ways to store them. I live in a small town and since the pandemic started, many items have been hard to find. I cooked from scratch frequently, but just like everyone else, I started using more and more convenience foods to save time. The pandemic made me take a hard look at our eating habits and the need to have resources more readily available. I plan several hours a week into my schedule to make homemade groceries. These few hours invested ended up saving more time and money. There are a few kitchen items you will need. They are basic items that every kitchen should have. A good sharp knife, hand grater, box grater, freezer bags, food processor, blender, glass and/or plastic storage freezer containers. I like the Pyrex glass storage containers since I can freeze and microwave in them. I prefer glass to plastic but use what you have. Baking sheets, baking pans, cookie scoops, measuring cups and spoons are a must. I have a large freezer so I freeze most of my groceries. Even if you do not have a freezer, make as much as you can from scratch. Freeze what you can or refrigerate until used. Even a few items will add up in savings. A dollar or two saved here and there really adds up over time. We all love the convenience foods available at the grocery store. They are already cooked and ready to eat. Included are recipes for the most popular convenience items. They can be made at a fraction of the cost and the recipes contain no preservatives or chemicals. Your wallet, health and waistline will thank you. Homemade items do not taste exactly like store bought items. We have become addicted to chemically produced flavors. Homemade products do not have chemicals or unnatural preservatives and usually use much less sugar too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable cookbook of delicious, flexible recipes, and easy, everyday solutions to reduce the amount of food waste you produce—for life. THE STATS ON FOOD WASTE ARE STAGGERING: currently one-third of all the food produced in the world is thrown away. Going zero-waste with food isn’t some-thing we’ll reach overnight, nor is it a hard and fast rule; but it’s something we should all be moving towards—to help the environment, and our own wallets too! Cook More, Waste Less uses recipe icons to guide you, and shows you how, for example, to cook a hearty Pot Roast and turn the leftovers into a Savory Pie, and then use the bones to make a stock to freeze for when you next make soup. And, how to make a meal of Simple Roasted Vegetables, then whip up a frittata the next morning, and use any scraps for Stone Soup. If you’ve got some extra rice? Turn it into Fancy Fried Rice with other ingredients in your fridge, or Leftover Rice Pudding for dessert. Fruit going soft? Turn it into Any Way Marmalade, or use banana peels for This Bread is Bananas. Fresh herbs or greens wilting? Put them in a pesto! Christine also includes guides on how to mix and match any array of vegetables, meats, and plant-based proteins for flexible, fast recipe ideas like Pasta Night or Taco Tuesdays. This definitive cookbook even looks beyond meals to other creative uses for extra foods, like making pet treats, beauty treatments, and home cleaning products, and it features advice from other experts—such as composting tips from Carson Arthur, and food waste solutions from Anna Olson, Bob Blumer, and Todd Perrin. Cook More, Waste Less is a life-changing cookbook that gives you simple and actionable steps on what you’ll cook next—and what you won’t throw away.

Book The Secret Life of Groceries

Download or read book The Secret Life of Groceries written by Benjamin Lorr and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A deeply curious and evenhanded report on our national appetites." --The New York Times In the tradition of Fast Food Nation and The Omnivore's Dilemma, an extraordinary investigation into the human lives at the heart of the American grocery store The miracle of the supermarket has never been more apparent. Like the doctors and nurses who care for the sick, suddenly the men and women who stock our shelves and operate our warehouses are understood as 'essential' workers, providing a quality of life we all too easily take for granted. But the sad truth is that the grocery industry has been failing these workers for decades. In this page-turning expose, author Benjamin Lorr pulls back the curtain on the highly secretive grocery industry. Combining deep sourcing, immersive reporting, and sharp, often laugh-out-loud prose, Lorr leads a wild investigation, asking what does it take to run a supermarket? How does our food get on the shelves? And who suffers for our increasing demands for convenience and efficiency? In this journey: We learn the secrets of Trader Joe's success from Trader Joe himself Drive with truckers caught in a job they call "sharecropping on wheels" Break into industrial farms with activists to learn what it takes for a product to earn certification labels like "fair trade" and "free range" Follow entrepreneurs as they fight for shelf space, learning essential tips, tricks, and traps for any new food business Journey with migrants to examine shocking forced labor practices through their eyes The product of five years of research and hundreds of interviews across every level of the business, The Secret Life of Groceries is essential reading for those who want to understand our food system--delivering powerful social commentary on the inherently American quest for more and compassionate insight into the lives that provide it.

Download or read book The Homemade Pantry written by Alana Chernila and published by Clarkson Potter. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This is my kitchen. Come on in, but be prepared—it might not be quite what you expect. There is flour on the counter, oats that overflowed onto the floor, chocolate-encrusted spoons in the sink. There is Joey, the husband, exhausted by the thirty-five preschoolers who were hanging on him all day, and he is stuffing granola into his mouth to ease his five o’clock starvation. There are two little girls trying to show me cartwheels in that miniscule space between the refrigerator and the counter where I really need to be.” In her debut cookbook, Alana Chernila inspires you to step inside your kitchen, take a look around, and change the way you relate to food. The Homemade Pantry was born of a tight budget, Alana’s love for sharing recipes with her farmers’ market customers, and a desire to enjoy a happy cooking and eating life with her young family. On a mission to kick their packaged-food habit, she learned that with a little determination, anything she could buy at the store could be made in her kitchen, and her homemade versions were more satisfying, easier to make than she expected, and tastier. Here are her very approachable recipes for 101 everyday staples, organized by supermarket aisle—from crackers to cheese, pesto to sauerkraut, and mayonnaise to toaster pastries. The Homemade Pantry is a celebration of food made by hand—warm mozzarella that is stretched, thick lasagna noodles rolled from flour and egg, fresh tomato sauce that bubbles on the stove. Whether you are trying a recipe for butter, potato chips, spice mixes, or ketchup, you will discover the magic and thrill that comes with the homemade pantry. Alana captures the humor and messiness of everyday family life, too. A true friend to the home cook, she shares her “tense moments” to help you get through your own. With stories offering patient, humble advice, tips for storing the homemade foods, and rich four-color photography throughout, The Homemade Pantry will quickly become the go-to source for how to make delicious staples in your home kitchen.

Book Frank Davis Makes Good Groceries

Download or read book Frank Davis Makes Good Groceries written by Frank Davis and published by Pelican Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There are few writers who I can read a couple of their lines and undoubtedly identify them. Their style is unmistakable . . . Hemingway and Dickens . . . but on a much more local level there's Frank Davis. His style of communication is so uniquely (or is it 'Naturally') New Orleans."-Don Dubuc, St. Tammany News Banner A culture that continues to capture the fascination of newcomers, the essence of New Orleans runs deeper than tourist attractions. There is a part of New Orleans that doesn't exist in the French Quarter or on college campuses or in the Superdome. This New Orleans lives and breathes in kitchens large and small throughout the city. Mamma's, grandmamma's, aunts, uncles, and cousins stir up southern comfort in the form of home-style food. This is the New Orleans that is found throughout Frank Davis's fifth book. Amidst anecdotes and memories of growing up in Louisiana, Davis shares recipes using language that creates a comfortable atmosphere for even amateur chefs. Frank Davis delves into Louisiana culture with recipes such as Crawfish Bread, Creole Rice Pudding, and Frank's Bananas Foster. Davis's advice on technique and preparation, and his suggestions on which sides should accompany entrees, and what to do with leftover ingredients and alternative seasonings takes the guesswork out of cooking, leaving only the fun and food. By the time the meal is finished, the term, "good groceries," will imply something much more than a meal. In the New Orleans vernacular, you have made groceries when you buy the ingredients at the store. Good groceries are the result of the love and effort that can transform ordinary ingredients into an outstanding dining experience.

Book The Zero Waste Chef

Download or read book The Zero Waste Chef written by Anne-Marie Bonneau and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *SHORTLISTED for the 2021 Gourmand World Cookbook Award* *SHORTLISTED for the 2022 Taste Canada Award for Single-Subject Cookbooks* A sustainable lifestyle starts in the kitchen with these use-what-you-have, spend-less-money recipes and tips, from the friendly voice behind @ZeroWasteChef. In her decade of living with as little plastic, food waste, and stuff as possible, Anne-Marie Bonneau, who blogs under the moniker Zero-Waste Chef, has preached that "zero-waste" is above all an intention, not a hard-and-fast rule. Because, sure, one person eliminating all their waste is great, but thousands of people doing 20 percent better will have a much bigger impact. And you likely already have all the tools you need to begin. In her debut book, Bonneau gives readers the facts to motivate them to do better, the simple (and usually free) fixes to ease them into wasting less, and finally, the recipes and strategies to turn them into self-reliant, money-saving cooks and makers. Rescue a hunk of bread from being sent to the landfill by making Mexican Hot Chocolate Bread Pudding, or revive some sad greens to make a pesto. Save 10 dollars (and the plastic tub) at the supermarket with Yes Whey, You Can Make Ricotta Cheese, then use the cheese in a galette and the leftover whey to make sourdough tortillas. With 75 vegan and vegetarian recipes for cooking with scraps, creating fermented staples, and using up all your groceries before they go bad--including end-of-recipe notes on what to do with your ingredients next--Bonneau lays out an attainable vision for a zero-waste kitchen.

Download or read book The Stocked Kitchen written by Sarah Kallio and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’ve all had that moment during the day when we ask with a pit in our stomach, “What am I going to make for dinner?” We stand in our kitchens having a conversation with ourselves (hopefully silently), “I don’t have anything to make.... What I planned doesn't sound good.... I don’t have any time to cook let alone get to the store.” Families across the country are continually searching for a way to make the process easier. Many get discouraged into pre-packaged complacency, which doesn’t satisfy any real cravings. Bookstores contain myriad cookbooks toting catch phrases like “Quick and Simple” or “Cheap and Easy.” The recipes may be quick, but they often require readers to purchase random ingredients they'll never use again. As a result, home cooks find themselves burdened with cluttered pantries, refrigerators, and cupboards filled with hundreds of dollars of cookbooks and specialty items like “red pepper paste” and are still left without an easy to use, versatile, and effective system for getting dinner on the table. That's where Sarah Kallio, Stacey Krastins, and The Stocked Kitchen comes in! The Stocked Kitchen™ is the first complete meal creation system with only one standard list of groceries. If your kitchen is "Stocked" with these ingredients you will always have what you need to create any of the 300 delicious recipes found in this book. These recipes have been used for all of the authors' own dining needs, including meals for drop-in guests, special occasions, and every-night family dinners. The Stocked Kitchen encompasses all parts of the meal creation process from shopping, to storing, to cooking, to serving. The results are delicious, “guest worthy” meals made from real, basic ingredients. Sarah and Stacey have proven The Stocked Kitchen™ system works. It has reduced their grocery bills, stress levels, trips to the market, and food waste. Create more delicious meals while removing the handcuffs of pre-planning. One grocery list, endless recipes!

Book THE SYSTEM IS THE SOLUTION

Download or read book THE SYSTEM IS THE SOLUTION written by Nick Cohenmeyer and published by . This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a Solution to the Disorder in your Personal and Business Life. One of the reasons for this book is because of my experiences in the military where I learned how applying a systematic approach to a task, commonly through some kind of SOP (standard operating procedure), ensures that a level of consistent deliverable is achieved, maintained, and incrementally improved over years of iterations. I used to wonder whether a systematic approach could be useful in other areas of my life outside of the military. Seven years later, I’ve found that not only is this answer YES, but it is hard for me to identify any area of my life that has NOT been profoundly improved through a rough initial implementation of a systems approach, followed by an incremental and automatic refinement. Key tenets of this book: I will bet you the price of this book that there is at least one aspect of your life that you want to change. Maybe it’s your professional or physical performance, your sleep quality, or your cluttered room, garage, or mind. I am writing this book for no other reason than to share what I believe is the secret to improvement in almost any area of life. The secret can be encapsulated in one word: system. Why do systems work? The answer is simple: The reason systems work is because the opposite of a good system is chaos. Whatever you want to improve can be enhanced by using a baseline system. Here’s why: A baseline system is a way to start from somewhere and through incremental refinement, to retain what is working and jettison what is no longer working. Chaos is where haphazard inputs yield unpredictable and inconsistent outcomes. Of course, just because a solution is simple doesn’t mean the solution will be easy. Fortunately, this book is the condensation of many costly experiments in what works and what doesn’t work, so that you can embrace the former and avoid the latter, and condense years of my time into just a few hours of your time. If you want to start fixing the problems with your fitness, your relationships, your businesses, and your focus, you will be challenged to find a better use of your time than spending it reading this book or listening to it if you purchased the audiobook format.
