Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the waves of discipleship programs that have swept over the church in the last 30 years, clergy, and laypersons alike are more confused than ever about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. What should a disciple of Jesus look and act like today? What is the relationship between discipleship and salvation, between discipleship and sanctification, between discipleship and ministry? How were disciples of Jesus different from other disciples in the ancient world? How did the early church carry out Jesus' agenda in "making disciples of all the nations"? In Following the Master, Michael J. Wilkins addresses these and many other questions that perplex the church today- not by offering another discipleship program or manual but by presenting a comprehensive biblical theology of discipleship. Following the Master compares other forms of master-disciple relationships in existence in the ancient Judaism and Greco-Roman world, traces Jesus' steps as he called and developed disciples, and Mediterranean world as it followed Jesus' command to make disciples. Following the Master lays the groundwork necessary for developing biblical discipleship ministries in the church, on the mission field, and in parachurch ministries. It is essential reading for all pastors, students, and Christian workers.

Book excerpt: I have been interested in writing since the second grade, but it was only after I trusted in God and began a close walk with Him that I have written this book. God truly has spoken to my heart and allowed me to write the poetry and prose found in When God Speaks. This is a book that has been written from life experiences and deep meditation. I write about many joys and sorrows that come straight from the heart. Many of the words are the way I perceive life in and through others. People are a blessing and are meant to be encouraged and filled with love and happiness. It is with joy that I share my thoughts, poetry, and prose with family and friends and, yes, with strangers yet to become friends. I hope you find this book a joy and an encouragement to read again and again. Frances Ann Spillers

Book Bad Girls and Boys Go to Hell or not

Download or read book Bad Girls and Boys Go to Hell or not written by Gloria Neufeld Redekop and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To question the idea of hell as a default destination is to question the entire fundamentalist evangelical worldview. This book does just that. Fundamentalist evangelicalism holds that the Bible is an infallible authority and that all are born in sin. Sinners go to hell, but Jesus, taking their place, died to save them from hell. How did this belief come to be? What were the effects on people brought up with a belief in the reality of hell? What has been the process of people leaving the fundamentalist evangelical movement? In Bad Girls and Boys Go To Hell (or not), Gloria Neufeld Redekop takes us on her own personal journey as she engages a movement in which she was raised, conducting a careful study of the history of fundamentalist evangelicalism, the attachment to a literal-factual interpretation of the Bible, and an analysis of the experience of those who have left the movement.

Book AIM to Be Like JESUS

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary Ruth Whitley
  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2022-11-03
  • ISBN : 1644160064
  • Pages : 157 pages

Download or read book AIM to Be Like JESUS written by Mary Ruth Whitley and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is God's description of His creation from the beginning of time to the end of time. Amid all the pages, of wonder and mystery, are people like you and me. AIM to Be Like Jesus describes the thread God has woven around human lives""a thread by which He calls out to mankind. His words are simply, "Here I am! I stand by the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20). While writing the book The BE Attitudes for Christians, I very clearly observed the many characters, whose lives God has given us as examples. It was these characters who inspired me to write my next book, AIM to Be Like Jesus. There were many characters I could have chosen, but I chose people who, in my opinion, portrayed a unique quality. These Bible characters have human attitudes that they purposely chose to use for God. This book begins with Abel, who was considered righteous because of his pleasing sacrifice to God. It ends with Jesus, who was righteous, perfect, and was used as the final sinless sacrifice for mankind. The acronym "AIM" is to help the reader focus on: the attitude to be developed, instruction about the characters, and meditation on Scripture about the characters. When characters in the Bible come alive, I often wonder, "Could I be like that?"

Book Ministering Like the Master Three Messages for Today s Preachers

Download or read book Ministering Like the Master Three Messages for Today s Preachers written by Stuart Olyott and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ was not a boring preacher! 'How wonderful it would be,' says Stuart Olyott in the introduction to Ministering Like the Master, 'if Christian preachers throughout the world were ministering like their Master!' Drawing on examples of Christ's preaching from the Gospels, Olyott challenges preachers today with three features of their Master's ministry. Christ's style and method were not boring, but gripping. Christ's preaching was evangelistic. Christ's ministry was more than just preaching; his whole life was ministry. In a fresh, compelling and practical way, Olyott guides preachers away from some of the perils and pitfalls that could hinder their success. In so doing, he shows us just how essential Christ's example is to those who seek to minister in his name today.

Book The Master and His Emissary

Download or read book The Master and His Emissary written by Iain McGilchrist and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of the bestselling classic – published with a special introduction to mark its 10th anniversary This pioneering account sets out to understand the structure of the human brain – the place where mind meets matter. Until recently, the left hemisphere of our brain has been seen as the ‘rational’ side, the superior partner to the right. But is this distinction true? Drawing on a vast body of experimental research, Iain McGilchrist argues while our left brain makes for a wonderful servant, it is a very poor master. As he shows, it is the right side which is the more reliable and insightful. Without it, our world would be mechanistic – stripped of depth, colour and value.

Book Fire and Snow

  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2018-07-11
  • ISBN : 1438470479

Download or read book Fire and Snow written by Marc DiPaolo and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fellow Inklings J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis may have belonged to different branches of Christianity, but they both made use of a faith-based environmentalist ethic to counter the mid-twentieth-century's triple threats of fascism, utilitarianism, and industrial capitalism. In Fire and Snow, Marc DiPaolo explores how the apocalyptic fantasy tropes and Christian environmental ethics of the Middle-earth and Narnia sagas have been adapted by a variety of recent writers and filmmakers of "climate fiction," a growing literary and cinematic genre that grapples with the real-world concerns of climate change, endless wars, and fascism, as well as the role religion plays in easing or escalating these apocalyptic-level crises. Among the many other well-known climate fiction narratives examined in these pages are Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games, The Handmaid's Tale, Mad Max, and Doctor Who. Although the authors of these works stake out ideological territory that differs from Tolkien's and Lewis's, DiPaolo argues that they nevertheless mirror their predecessors' ecological concerns. The Christians, Jews, atheists, and agnostics who penned these works agree that we all need to put aside our cultural differences and transcend our personal, socioeconomic circumstances to work together to save the environment. Taken together, these works of climate fiction model various ways in which a deep ecological solidarity might be achieved across a broad ideological and cultural spectrum.
