Download or read book More Joy Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Paul Wilhelm Von Keppler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from More Joy, Vol. 3 The author felt constrained to put all this to good use, to return greetings, to correct blunders, to comply with requests. Thus a new edition has come into existence; and now, bearing the device Fifty-fourth Thousand, the Little Book begins its second voyage around the world. It is going to tap gently at the door of Old friends, to greet them in the author's name and to thank them. Perhaps it is also going to enroll new friends in the crusade of joy. In behalf of this crusade, we may properly enough here set down one or two wholly imper sonal Observations suggested by many kind, and a few unsympathetic, criticisms. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Myra Gray, or Sown in Tears, Reaped in Joy, Vol. 1 of 3: A Novel I doubted for a moment, and in this prae tical mammon-worshipping world no one should doubt longer, to what epoch to take my reader; how far back it would be desirable or easy to carry him - or her. I say easy, because there is a constraint in placing before the audience forms dressed in antique garb and disguising thought in obsolete language; in endeavouring to represent that as stamped with the impres sion of the mind, which is but a hardly-sustained effort of imagination or memory. Hail to the masters of this art! They be but few, and it is dangerous to attempt to follow them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Myra Gray; Or Sown in Tears, Reaped in Joy, Vol. 3 of 3: A Novel We must go back a few days - a week or two, perhaps. Not, indeed, into some indefinite space which has been left behind, and which the reader has already had time to forget, but simply to that period when Gilbert Ferrers was in the eyes of the world, if not in the eyes of his wife, an honest man. There had been whispers, it is true; but there always will be whispers when Parvenu has pictures, and carriages, and the best still champagne; when he is indifferent to his wife and his home, and prefers truffles and petits soupers to the domestic veal, however well served. Book Hope Joy and Affection in the Classical World

Download or read book Hope Joy and Affection in the Classical World written by Ruth R. Caston and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emotions have long been an interest for those studying ancient Greece and Rome. But while the last few decades have produced excellent studies of individual emotions and the different approaches to them by the major philosophical schools, the focus has been almost entirely on negative emotions. This might give the impression that the Greeks and Romans had little to say about positive emotion, something that would be misguided. As the chapters in this collection indicate, there are representations of positive emotions extending from archaic Greek poetry to Augustine, and in both philosophical works and literary genres as wide-ranging as lyric poetry, forensic oratory, comedy, didactic poetry, and the novel. Nor is the evidence uniform: while many of the literary representations give expression to positive emotion but also describe its loss, the philosophers offer a more optimistic assessment of the possibilities of attaining joy or contentment in this life. The positive emotions show some of the same features that all emotions do. But unlike the negative emotions, which we are able to describe and analyze in great detail because of our preoccupation with them, positive emotions tend to be harder to articulate. Hence the interest of the present study, which considers how positive emotions are described, their relationship to other emotions, the ways in which they are provoked or upset by circumstances, how they complicate and enrich our relationships with other people, and which kinds of positive emotion we should seek to integrate. The ancient works have a great deal to say about all of these topics, and for that reason deserve more study, both for our understanding of antiquity and for our understanding of the positive emotions in general.

This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cumorah's Southern Cross, Vol. 3: July, 1929 Every man who pays his tithing should enjoy it. The Gospel of Christ is a gospel of enjoyment. Man is that he may have joy. When one pays his tithing without enjoyment he is robbed of a part of the blessing. He must learn t) give cheerfully, willingly and joy fully, and his gift will be blessed. In order that he may receive more enjoyment he needs to pay more frequently. Why deprive oneself of the joy that comes from this voluntary giving until the end of the year, when by payments throughout the year we may in crease and enhance not only the joy of our giving but the practice of it. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Myra Gray; Or Sown in Tears, Reaped in Joy, Vol. 2 of 3: A Novel Knew her aunt only by name, and Lady Honoria and her sister had only been as kind to her as they had been to the pointers, who were allowed to come in and be patted on certain days, or have a lavish mess served up to them in the kitchen, as the fancy urged them. They never do feed dogs in the kennel in Ireland, you know. The friend who had been unvarying in his affection till she left him to be finished, was dead; and the man who used to ride with her, ' and was now her sort of guardian, had taken to writing judicious letters. I believe Myra Gray had every virtue but judgment, and she was not likely to become a violent admirer of it in others when it opposed her own wishes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heriots, Vol. 3 of 3 She could not diagnose, she could not prescribe for it. Olivia's light-heartedness appeared to be deserting her at the very moment when joy, confidence, triumph, ought, as She judged, to be at their highest pitch. She had rallied Olivia sometimes on her melancholy moods, as accidents which naturally befall people who are excessively in love, the mere reaction of overwrought sentiment. Lovers are traditionally a moody, wayward race, who vex their own and each other's souls with groundless alarms, unjust suspicions, imaginary grievances. Comfort, tranquillity, happiness, come only with marriage. And what marriage could pro mise more happily, more auspiciously than Olivia's? Download or read book Poor Nellie Vol 3 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Catherine Barter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poor Nellie, Vol. 3 of 3 Nellie missed a mail before she answered this letter; but she was always unsatisfactory about catching the mails, and, of late especially, her letters had come very irregularly. The letter she finally did write would, I think, have seemed rather a disappointing one to most husbands with a heart as full of warm love as Charlie's was for her. So little changed was he by those five long years of absence and some time of danger, that it seemed to him as if it were only yesterday that he had been with his wife, and heard her voice, and seen her sweet face; only yesterday he had said good - bye to her, and felt so moved by her beauty that to think of it moved him still, - for her pathetic beauty had touched him more in tears and sorrow even than in joy. He remembered her pain at parting from him, her wish to go with him, as we remember that which is very near to the present hour. The love she had shown him, surpassing far her love for her child, had stilled the grief of parting to him, and made what was deep sorrow at the moment feel afterwards like a sort of rapt and sacred joy. There is one kind of love which has a very holy spirit in it. Like a guardian angel of all that is noblest in the soul, that holiness can go with a man unchanged, unspotted over the whole world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Love, Vol. 1 of 3 And with this prayer, which seemed to carry both his love and his joy to heaven there to be strengthened and purified, the train ground slowly up to Highwood Station and Cyril leaped lightly out. It was past five o'clock - about four hours to wait before a visit to Rose Hill, where the Branscombes lived, was possible even for an engaged man to make. But to one impatient and in love, it is better to travel all night and wait those four hours on the right side of the line, than to go to bed like an ordinary mortal and come down by the morning mail - better a thousand times to lose a night's rest and undergo unnecessary fatigue than to forego two hours of love and gain six of repose! Book Science and Philosophy in the Indian Buddhist Classics Vol 3

Download or read book Science and Philosophy in the Indian Buddhist Classics Vol 3 written by Thupten Jinpa and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-12-13 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deepen your understanding of meaning and truth with the third volume of the Dalai Lama’s esteemed series Science and Philosophy in the Indian Buddhist Classics. Science and Philosophy in the Indian Buddhist Classics compiles classical Buddhist explorations of the nature of the material world, the human mind, reason, and liberation, and puts them into context for the modern reader. This ambitious four-volume series—a major resource for the history of ideas and especially the history of science and philosophy—has been conceived by and compiled under the visionary supervision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself. It is his view that the exploratory thinking of the great masters of classical India still has much that is of interest to us today, whether we are Buddhist or not. These volumes make those insights accessible. In this third volume the focus turns to exploring the philosophical schools of India. The practice of presenting the views of various schools of philosophy dates back to the first millennium in India, when proponents of competing traditions would arrange the diverse sets of philosophical positions in a hierarchy culminating in their own school’s superior tenets. Centuries later, relying on the Indian Buddhist treatises, Tibet developed its own tradition of works on tenets (grub mtha’), often centered on the four schools of Buddhist philosophy, using them to demonstrate the philosophical evolution within their own tradition, and within individual practitioners, as they progressed through increasingly more subtle expressions of the true reality. The present work follows in this venerable tradition, but with a modern twist. Like its predecessors, it presents the views of seven non-Buddhist schools, those of the Samkhya, Vaisesika, Nyaya, Mimamsa, Vedanta, Jaina, and Lokayata, followed by the Buddhist Vaibhasika, Sautrantika, Cittamatra, and Madhyamaka schools, arranging them like steps on a ladder to the profound. But rather than following in the sharply polemical approach of its ancient predecessors, it strives to survey each tradition authentically, relying on and citing the texts sacred to each, allowing the different traditions to speak for themselves. What, it asks, are the basic components of the world we experience? What is the nature of their ultimate reality? And how can we come to experience that for ourselves? See how the rich spiritual traditions of India approached these key questions, where they agreed, and how they evolved through dialogue and debate. This presentation of philosophical schools is introduced by His Holiness and is accompanied by an extensive introduction and survey by Professor Donald Lopez Jr. of the University of Michigan, who is uniquely qualified to communicate the scope and significance of this literary and spiritual heritage to modern readers.
