Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from More English Fairy Tales Then as to using tales in Lowland Scotch, whereat a Saturday Reviewer, whose identity and fatherland were not difficult to guess, was so shocked. Scots a dialect of English! Scots tales the same as English! Horror and Philistinism! Was the Reviewer's outcry. Matter of fact, is my reply, which will only confirm him, I fear, in his convictions. Yet I appeal to him, why make a difference between tales told on different sides of the Border? A tale told in Durham or Cumberland in a dialect which only Dr. Murray could distinguish from Lowland Scotch, would on all hands be allowed to be English. The same tale told a few miles farther North, why should we refuse it the same qualification? A tale in Henderson is English: why not a tale in Chambers, the majority of whose tales are to be found also south of the Tweed? Book English Fairy Tales and More English Fairy Tales

Download or read book English Fairy Tales and More English Fairy Tales written by Donald Haase Ph.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-06-19 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first compilation of the full first-edition texts of the classic fairy tale collections by Joseph Jacobs, with Jacobs' original prefaces and annotations. In these two classic collections, first published in 1890 and 1894, Joseph Jacobs combined folklore, children's literature, and the eclectic scholarship of the Victorian era to create a storehouse of tales that inhabited the imaginations of children and adults for generations. Here readers first met Tom Tit Tot, Molly Whuppie, and Jack the Giant-Killer, and first read the stories of the Three Little Pigs, the Three Bears, and Henny-Penny. Jacobs' daring collections challenged conventional thinking about the meaning of "folk," the individual artistry behind folktales, and the boundaries between folklore and literature, anticipating modern developments in folklore studies. His original editions of these 87 classic tales, along with the original illustrations, are reprinted in this new volume, offering readers an unsurpassed understanding of the development of the classic fairy tale in late Victorian England.

This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Fairy Tales, Folklore and Legends The stories have yet to be discovered which can compete with folk-lore stories in fascination for the young, and the reason for this it is not hard to divine. The folk-lore tale has had its origin among plain, artless people, in many respects only grown up children, and its survival to our times is simply evidence of these people having regarded it as being too excellent for them to allow it to be lost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Fairy Tales By Joseph Jacobs A word or two as to our title seems necessary. We have called our stories Fairy Tales though few of them speak of fairies. The same remark applies to the collection of the Brothers Grimm and to all the other European collections, which contain exactly the same classes of tales as ours. Yet our stories are what the little ones mean when they clamour for "Fairy Tales," and this is the only name which they give to them. One cannot imagine a child saying, "Tell us a folk-tale, nurse," or "Another nursery tale, please, grandma." As our book is intended for the little ones, we have indicated its contents by the name they use. The words "Fairy Tales" must accordingly be taken to include tales in which occurs something "fairy," something extraordinary--fairies, giants, dwarfs, speaking animals. It must be taken also to cover tales in which what is extraordinary is the stupidity of some of the actors.

Sleepy as it is now, it was once noisy enough, and what made the noise was-rats. The place was so infested with them as to be scarce worth living in. There wasn't a barn or a corn-rick, a store-room or a cupboard, but they ate their way into it. Not a cheese but they gnawed it hollow, not a sugar puncheon but they cleared out. Why the very mead and beer in the barrels was not safe from them. They'd gnaw a hole in the top of the tun, and down would go one master rat's tail, and when he brought it up round would crowd all the friends and cousins, and each would have a suck at the tail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Fairy and Folk Tales When the bell-ringing was over there were more stars in the darkening sky, and presently the moon rose, large and red, from behind the wood in which the rooks were sleeping. A bend of the river was alight directly. All was so still that Teel heard now and then the faint creak of the insects stirring in the bushes Of the common, and the whirr of the night-moth as she flew by. Heigho he sighed. I get nothing by this thinking, so I will go home to my good dame. He was about to rise, when a young rabbit leapt into his lap. The rabbit tamely suffered him to pull its ears. Silly puss! Said the shoemaker; when you jump into the lap of a man who has an empty cupboard, don't you know that you are good to eat? But never fear, small creature. AS you trust me, you shall take no harm. Jacobs was born in Sydney to a Jewish family. Book Fairy Tales From Folk Lore Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fairy Tales From Folk Lore Classic Reprint written by Herschel Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herschel Williams selected these twelve fairy tales from a great geographic range, mostly from across Europe, with two from North America and one from Japan. The tone of this story book is gentle and familiar, but without shying away from the occasionally gruesome details that make fairytales so enticing for younger readers. While many of the tropes are similar to the fairytales we are all familiar with from the Grimm brothers, with lots of events occurring in threes and forgotten younger siblings often turning out to have the wisdom, kindness or bravery their older siblings lack, these are a set of entirely different stories from around the world. The collective imagination of the various fairy tale tellers must have been limitless to create such a wide range of these magical stories. In the first of these stories, the Irish story Yellow Lily, the hero is a cocky young prince who loves to gamble, and is saved from a grisly fate by the eponymous Yellow Lily. Yellow Lily is a heroine who doesn't mind using her wits to lash the hero when he needs it, rather than a merely a meek story device. This story also contains the great tongue twister "Yellow Lily of Loch Lein," try saying that with your mouth full! Each of the other stories are at least as fascinating, such as the Scandinavian tale The Mysterious Prince which starts like Beauty And The Beast and ends very differently, or the Canadian The Goddess Of Light, which reads like a cross between Bluebeard and a creation myth. Princes, princesses, elves and giants all abound in these stories, and the evil ones are guaranteed to get their comeuppance. Book excerpt: Jacobs edited the journal Folklore from 1899 to 1900 and from 1890 to 1916 he edited multiple collections of fairy tales that were published with illustrations by John Dickson Batten: English Fairy Tales, Celtic Fairy Tales, Indian Fairy Tales, More English Fairy Tales, More Celtic Fairy Tales (all 1890 to 1895) and Europa's Fairy Book (also issued as European Folk and Fairy Tales) in 1916. He was inspired in this by the Brothers Grimm and the romantic nationalism common in folklorists of his age; he wished English children to have access to English fairy tales, whereas they were chiefly reading French and German tales;
