Book Morality Violence and Ritual Circumcision

Download or read book Morality Violence and Ritual Circumcision written by Na'ama Carlin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses the Jewish ritual of circumcision to consider how violent acts are embedded within entrenched moral discourses and offers a new perspective for thinking about violence. Intervening in contemporary debates on the Jewish ritual of circumcision, it departs from both the ordinary secular defences of circumcision for medical reasons, and the criticisms that consider it an unethical violation of bodies that cannot consent. An examination of the intersection of violence and morality, this book rejects the binary logic on which popular debates on circumcision hinge, arguing that in some instances violence can be a productive experience and can thus be considered beyond ‘good’ and ‘bad’. Engaging with the works of Jacques Derrida, the author puts forward a framework of violence of ontology, which is characterised as a violence that is related to existence, the violence of being, which resists definition through binary oppositions. In so doing, the author contends that circumcision is in fact a form of generative violence that is leveraged for cultural purposes and inherent in the making of bodies. As such, this volume offers a compelling framework that investigates the relationship between bodies, identities, ethics, and violence, and will therefore appeal to scholars of sociology, social theory, and religion with interests in the sociology of the body, ritual, and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who owns your sex organs? Different cultures today and in different epochs have given a variety of answers to this question. It may seem self evident that every individual owns and has sovereignty over his or her own body parts, such as the head, legs, nose, stomach, pancreas, and other body parts. The sex organs, however, seem to be an exception. Even though they are as much an integral part of the individual as a leg or a liver, the sex organs are unique in that many cultures have established laws and taboos over the use and even the mere display of the sex organs. Thus, certain cultures have placed constraints over the individual's ownership of his or her sex organs and actively regulate and restrict the individual's access and use of those organs. In other cultures, the question of ownership of the sex organs is more decisively answered. In any culture where circumcision to any degree of either the male or female is practiced, permitted, encouraged, or even merely tolerated, it is clear that the individual is not considered to own his own sex organs. In the United States today, the medical establishment has created an is considered acceptable and desirable that anyone for environment where it any reason can authorize or execute the amputation of the foreskin from a male child's penis.

This book was released on 2018-11-03 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes the report of the planetary violence generated by male sexual mutilation. All genocides are committed in the presence of circumcision on one side or the other, and sometimes on both sides. Wars are three times more frequent in circumcising countries. The majority of terrorists are circumcised. The death penalty is twice more frequent in circumcising countries. Weinstein, Strauss-Kahn, Polanski, Ramadan, and most rapists are circumcised. Women are particularly ill-treated by the circumcised. Excision only exists when men are circumcised. This book tries to explain the phenomenon. May it contribute to end it.

Book Questioning Circumcision

Download or read book Questioning Circumcision written by Ronald Goldman and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QUESTIONING CIRCUMCISION: A JEWISH PERSPECTIVE is the first critical examination of the growing controversy of male infant circumcision with special attention to contemporary concerns of the Jewish community. Endorsed by five rabbis among others, this extraordinary book examines the origins, assumed benefits, risks, and unrecognized consequences of the Jewish practice with thorough documentation and moving personal experiences. Consider these facts: Circumcision is not universal among Jews. Jewish press articles have questioned circumcision. A male child born of a Jewish mother is a Jew, whether he is circumcised or not. Jewish circumcision has never had anything to do with health concerns. Circumcision conflicts with significant Jewish laws and values. An Israeli organization publicly opposes circumcision. "Dr. Goldman has written a thoughtful, provocative book on a difficult subject. He challenges us to reexamine long-held assumptions and to reconsider the practice of milah (ritual circumcision) in light of contemporary evidence. By giving us an insightful and carefully documented exploration of a controversial perspective, Dr. Goldman helps to foster a healthy and valuable dialogue within the Jewish community." -Rabbi Jonathan Kraus, Beth El Temple Center "If you are a liberal Jew, whether you see circumcision as the sanctification of the covenant, as a ceremony marking you as a Jew, or otherwise, this book stimulates deeper reflection about the practice. As an aware, concerned, and introspective people, Jews must examine whether our rites are right. We must determine if our ceremonies, traditions, and practices reflect our innermost beliefs. Asking ourselves and each other the question 'Why?' is one of the most sacred tasks to which a modern Jew can dedicate himself or herself." -Rabbi Donald Pollock, pastoral psychotherapist, writer, and lecturer Ronald Goldman, Ph.D., a psychological researcher, educator, and writer, is the executive director of the Circumcision Resource Center in Boston, a nonprofit educational organization. He is internationally known for his work on circumcision, gives lectures and seminars on the subject, and provides consultation to expectant parents and circumcised men. As the author of Circumcision: The Hidden Trauma, Dr. Goldman has been a featured guest on local and national radio and television shows and has been published in medical journals, newspapers, parenting publications, and Jewish periodicals.

Download or read book The Munchausen Complex written by Richard L. Matteoli and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Conquer Thyself: Socialization of violence and abuse is often highly structured through the Munchausen Complex. Munchausen Syndrome occurs when an individual harms themselves for attention and self-glorification. Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy is when an individual harms another, usually under their care. Attention and self-glorification are achieved through their victim's subsequent medical treatment. Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy is a crime with a victim. Violence and abuse are often common in families, passed down from one generation to the next and may be termed Transgenerational Munchausen Syndrome as these families expand and their habits are introduced into society. Munchausen Syndrome in Collective Transmission occurs when such practices become an acceptable part of society often eventuating into full acculturation. In this way societies attach themselves to self-glorification with various explanations of justification. A Mandated Report is required to be filed by health care, legal, social service and educational professionals who suspect child abuse, as well as developers of film. As socialized beings, we are often unaware why we think what we think and why we do what we do. Exploring beneath the surface, we may discover we are not who we imagine we are. Are our subtle perversions and aberrations so different from those of the ancients, or other cultures we label primitive? The author was under military orders not to discuss the subjects presented in this part's Mandated Report on child abuse to the social body for the last six years of his U.S. Navy career. Censorship is strong when one questions social norms, folkways and rituals that address issues of identity. Internal, interpersonal and professional conflicts arise.

Book Fraternal Relations in Monasteries

Download or read book Fraternal Relations in Monasteries written by Mikaela Sundberg and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the tensions between Christian ideals of love and the concrete realities of everyday monastic life. Based on a study of Cistercian monasteries in France, it develops a novel conceptualization of fraternal relations and addresses how monks and nuns strive to accomplish such relationships within their communities. By focusing on the main interaction contexts of monasteries as a form of voluntary total institution, the book shows how attempts to generate collective solidarity, relate to other members as equals and avoid preferential relations conflict with practices of everyday life. Although fraternal ideals are similar for monks and nuns, the analysis reveals significant gender differences regarding the legitimacy of different forms of interaction and relationships as well as how to control them. The book appeals to readers with an interest in total institutions, sociology of religion, sociology of friendship, sociology of intimacy and also to scholars with an interest in theology of love and practical theology.

The studies assembled here focus on the complex role of language in Africa’s historical development, with a particular emphasis on pragmatics and semantics. From precolonial dynamics of wealth and poverty to the conceptual foundations of nationalist movements, each contribution strikes a balance between the local and the global, engaging with a distinctively African intellectual tradition while analyzing the regional and global contexts in which categories like “work,” “marriage,” and “land” take shape.
