As luck would have it, he has been invited to the same house party as she and will have ample opportunity to win his bet. Diana is ready to marry again. Book Songs in Motion

Download or read book Songs in Motion written by Yonatan Malin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qualities of motion and emotion in song come from poetic images, melody, harmony, and voice leading, but they also come from rhythm and meter-the flow and articulation of words and music in time. This book explores rhythm and meter in the nineteenth-century German Lied, including songs for voice and piano by Fanny Hensel née Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Hugo Wolf. The Lied, as a genre, is characterized especially by the fusion of poetry and music. Poetic meter itself has expressive qualities, and rhythmic variations contribute further to the modes of signification. These features often carry over into songs, even as they are set in the more strictly determined periodicities of musical meter. A new method of declamatory-schema analysis is presented to illustrate common possibilities for setting trimeter, tetrameter, and pentameter lines. Degrees of rhythmic regularity and irregularity are also considered. There has been a wealth of new work on metric theory and analysis in the past thirty years; here this research is reviewed and applied in song analysis. Topics include the nature of metric entrainment (drawing on music psychology), metric dissonance, hypermeter, and phrase rhythm. Whereas narrative accounts of the nineteenth-century Lied typically begin with Schubert, here forms of expansion and elision in songs by Hensel provide a point of departure. Repetition links up directly with motion in songs by Schubert, including his famous "Gretchen am Spinnrade." The doubling and reverberation of vocal melody creates a form of interiorized resonance in Schumann's songs. Brahms and Wolf are typically understood as polar opposites in the later nineteenth century; here the differences are clarified along with deeper affinities. Songs by both Brahms and Wolf may be understood as musical performances of poetic readings, and in this regard they both belong to a late period of cultural history.

Book Songs of a Sanctified Sojourner

Download or read book Songs of a Sanctified Sojourner written by Evelyn M. Cowan and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been my whole life in the making. It contains the work of a free spirit, patient in tribulations, yet, ever optimistic touching the promises of God. As the psalmist so eloquently phrased it: "This is my story, this is my song. Praising my Saviour all the day long." Please savor one of my favorite compositions. Déjà vu, A Song of Love I saw a gazebo in my mind Where I once stood with you Beneath a flourishing vine. The weather was oh, so balmy, And the mockingbird was singing so fine, That the reverie thought stills me, chills me, Thrills me. And lately, I've been seeing angels in my sleep. Dreamt once night I saw an angel weep 'Cause I'd lost my well beloved. Dreamt of angels ascending Jacob's ladder Two by two, Who magically and mysteriously knew That I adored you through and through. Déjà vu: the song is you. And now night slowly descends upon me. The wind whispers of a dove in love. God help me from your throne above. I must close now, my love. For my eyes are getting misty. But sugar sweet, oh mi amour, Your kiss shall pay me back and more.

Book The Splendid and Extraordinary Life of Beautimus Potamus

Download or read book The Splendid and Extraordinary Life of Beautimus Potamus written by Peggy A. Wheeler and published by Dragon Moon Press. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You’re never too old for a great fairy tale." - 5-star reader's review. A funny and quirky fantasy fairy tale for adults complete with mystery, murder, romance! The mystical green planet of Rendaz is home to devout goddess worshiper and university professor, middle-aged Beautimus Potamus—who also happens to be a hippo plagued by hot flashes and poor self-esteem. Beautimus forms an alliance with Samuel S. Goodwings, a younger womanizing, atheist praying mantis. When these two are together, life morphs from the mundane into the fantastic. Our unlikely duo solves mysteries, bring a murderer to justice, and even help end a war while experiencing their own trials, triumphs, and tragedies. Often with humor, their situations and adventures parody Earth culture. During their exploits, the two interact with a host of characters, including a pair of New Age flamingos, an A.D.H.D. afflicted trout, an orangutan detective, and a 310-year-old blue crane High Priestess. All of these creatures are more “human” in surprising ways than the citizens of the blue planet, Earth, we discover was once a Rendazian Colony. Beautimus Potamus’ tongue-in-cheek story is a magical fable-stew made with the ingredients of satire, drama, social commentary, and comedy, with jests, puns and wordplay sprinkled throughout. For good measure, a generous pinch of romantic flavoring is thrown into the pot. Readers' reviews: "Truly a splendid and extraordinary story. It was refreshing to find something so original. Well written, vivid descriptions, great humor and delightful characters." "So often we limit our reading to books by Dan Brown, John Grisham, Nicholas Sparks or Michael Connelly and we [...] miss the gems by new writers that put their heart, soul and dreams on paper to let our imaginations go where theirs have. This is one of those gems." If you liked this book, you should check out Peggy's dystopian tale, Chaco as well! About the author Peggy A. Wheeler is a writer of fantastical fiction. Her debut novel, THE RAVEN'S DAUGHTER is published by Dragon Moon Press in Canada. Peggy studied English and Creative Writing at the U.C.L.A., where she was the only undergraduate chosen to study with Robert Pinsky, former Poet Laureate of the United States. Peggy has led adult poetry and fiction writing critique groups and workshops in both Colorado and California.
