Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to African Stories by Moonlight. The most memorable evenings I had as a child were those in which, together with other children, I listened to adults tell us stories which were often accompanied with rhythmic and delightful songs. When I started raising my own family in the city, my children looked forward to those nights when we would regale them with those stories and songs. I noticed then that many urban children were not exposed to these stories, as they were no longer in the environment in which they were told. It was after I did some studies on Indigenous African Education as a Visiting Scholar in the African Studies Center at UCLA, that I realized the molding influence of these stories on our character. Storytelling, of course, was a basic ingredient for traditional African education. I have therefore decided to share some of these stories with those children of African descent who are now away from the environment where they are told. Children and adults of other cultures will enjoy these stories, and learn from the wisdom embedded in them. The enthusiastic reception given to them by the multicultural classes to which I read them in the Long Beach Unified School District in California, further encouraged me to seek to publish them. I have written ten short stories in a language suitable for school readers, and a wider audience. If these stories help to revive storytelling in homes and communities, one objective for writing this book shall have been achieved. For the benefit of teachers who want to use the book to teach English, social studies, or multicultural studies, and for the benefit of families who would like to use the book for entertainment and learning, comprehension questions and answers have been prepared on each of the stories. Book Sleep Like a Tiger

Download or read book Sleep Like a Tiger written by Mary Logue and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2012 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2013 Randolph Caldecott Honor Award In this magical bedtime story, the lyrical narrative echoes a Runaway Bunny - like cadence: "Does everything in the world go to sleep?" the little girl asks. In sincere and imaginative dialogue between a not-at-all sleepy child and understanding parents, the little girl decides "in a cocoon of sheets, a nest of blankets," she is ready to sleep, warm and strong, just like a tiger. The Caldecott Honor artist Pamela Zagarenski's rich, luminous mixed-media paintings effervesce with odd, charming details that nonsleepy children could examine for hours. A rare gem.

Book Kiss the Joy as it Flies

Download or read book Kiss the Joy as it Flies written by Sheree Fitch and published by Nimbus+ORM. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The award-winning, bestselling author takes readers on “a thrilling joy-ride through a week in the life of a self-made woman facing her deepest fears” (Sea and Be Scene). With all the wisdom, humor and joy we’ve come to expect from Sheree Fitch, Kiss the Joy as It Flies, first published in 2008, marked the well-loved author’s move from children’s literature to adult fiction. Set in the fictional Maritime town of Odell, with a cast of exasperating but lovable characters, Kiss the Joy as It Flies promises to be a remarkable debut and a reader’s favorite. Panic-stricken by the news that she needs exploratory surgery, forty-eight-year-old Mercy Beth Fanjoy drafts a monumental to-do list and sets about putting her messy life in order. Among other things (hide the vibrator!), she’s determined to finally uncover the identity of her secret admirer; reconnect with long-lost friend and rival Teeny Gaudet; and, most importantly, get her hands on the note her father left before committing suicide all those years ago. But tidying up the edges of her life means the past comes rushing back to haunt her and the present keeps throwing up more to-dos. Between fits of weeping and laughter, ranting and bliss, Mercy must contemplate the meaning of life in the face of her own death. In a week filled with the riot of an entire life, nothing turns out the way she’d expected. “Kiss the Joy as It Flies is funny and heartbreaking and thought-provoking and sometimes all three—and more—at once. Fitch made us wait a long time for her first novel, but it was worth it. It’s a rare and lovely book.” —January Magazine
