Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coping with being attacked and left for dead isn't easy, but Samantha Moon is grateful that she survived - until she suspects she didn't. Vanishing from mirrors is only the first of a series of bizarre events that defies explanation, even to her trained investigative mind. A severe allergy to the sun, alertness at night, inability to eat food that isn't blood, and worst of all: she can't remember the last time she needed the bathroom. Of course, it's not all bad. Years have fallen off her face, her hair is perfect, her senses are honed, and (assuming she hasn't gone crazy) she can even see in the dark. It's all too much to process, so she does the only thing that makes any sense: tries to go back to work. A huge hat, shades, and half a bottle of high-test sunscreen later, she's back out inspecting properties with her partner Chad. Her first day, she suspects a HUD recipient of having undeclared income. Determined to cling to the career she worked so hard for, Sam traces the money back to small-time arms dealers selling big-time weapons. Everything seems to be routine until her sluggish reflexes get someone shot - and her husband suffers an emotional breakdown. Worse, she faces a more insidious and dangerous enemy than an apocalyptic militia group with military hardware... Daytime.

Book October Mourning

Download or read book October Mourning written by Leslea Newman and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterful poetic exploration of the impact of Matthew Shepard’s murder on the world. On the night of October 6, 1998, a gay twenty-one-year-old college student named Matthew Shepard was kidnapped from a Wyoming bar by two young men, savagely beaten, tied to a remote fence, and left to die. Gay Awareness Week was beginning at the University of Wyoming, and the keynote speaker was Lesléa Newman, discussing her book Heather Has Two Mommies. Shaken, the author addressed the large audience that gathered, but she remained haunted by Matthew’s murder. October Mourning, a novel in verse, is her deeply felt response to the events of that tragic day. Using her poetic imagination, the author creates fictitious monologues from various points of view, including the fence Matthew was tied to, the stars that watched over him, the deer that kept him company, and Matthew himself. More than a decade later, this stunning cycle of sixty-eight poems serves as an illumination for readers too young to remember, and as a powerful, enduring tribute to Matthew Shepard’s life. Back matter includes an epilogue, an afterword, explanations of poetic forms, and resources.

Book The Moon Is Always Round

Download or read book The Moon Is Always Round written by Jonathan Gibson and published by New Growth Press. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even young children want answers to the hard questions about God and suffering. In The Moon Is Always Round, seminary professor and author Jonathan Gibson uses the vivid imagery of the moon to explain to children how God’s goodness is always present, even when it might appear to be obscured by upsetting or difficult circumstances. In this beautiful, full-color illustrated book, he allows readers to eavesdrop on the conversations he had with his young son in response to his sister’s death. Father and son share a simple liturgy together that reminds them that, just as the moon is always round despite its different phases, so also the goodness of God is always present throughout the different phases of life. A section in the back of the book offers further biblical help for parents and caregivers in explaining God’s goodness to children. Jonathan Gibson reminds children of all ages that God’s goodness is present in the most difficult of times, even if we can’t always see it.

Book The Day the Moon Split in Two

Download or read book The Day the Moon Split in Two written by Tanzila Ahmed and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-12 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mother's face used to remind me of the moonround and fairthe acne pockmarks like the cratered surface cheek dimples like meteor shadows. She was plumpa celestial body to reckon with with gravity so powerful it could make waves. From political activist and writer Tanzila Ahmed comes a collection of poetry capturing the experiencing grief from the loss of her mother as a Muslim Bangladeshi-American woman. Written over the course of almost a decade, the poems grapple with the various stages of grief while exploring various cultural and spiritual death rituals as South Asian Muslim. This collection is evocative and reflective, especially for those grasping to make sense after experiencing grief. This is her third published poetry collection. Praise for The Day the Moon Split in Two: "A family garden-life giver and taker. The deep upheaval and cyclical moon tides of bereavement. Flickering, fickle memory and language, and all the questions that grief grows. Especially: how do I make meaning of my mother's death against time's slow obscuring? "I am still fasting." And then the balm of this familiar, immigrant particular: an ancient plastic yogurt container, passed back and forth for years, "finding it is never yogurt inside" but magic. Taz Ahmed's The Day the Moon Split in Two is a brave, bountiful sharing."-Kenji C. Liu, author of Monsters I Have Been"The poems in Tanzila Ahmed's The Day the Moon Split in Two convey, with great generosity and heartrending beauty, the relentless challenges of coping with grief. In writing about the sudden loss of her mother in 2011, Ahmed invites us to accompany her as she seeks a sense of healing in memory, family, art, and faith. By the end, as we fight back our own tears, or allow them to flow freely, we too come to bear witness that there is no cure for grief, that because grief is such a constant, our "joy must be louder." There is indeed a comforting thread of joy woven into the heartbreak of these poems-a joy housed in reverence and love, in a daughter's desire to honor the richness of her mother's life."-Faisal Mohyuddin, author of The Displaced Children of Displaced ChildrenThe Day The Moon Split In Two is an homage to Taz's mother as much as it is a reckoning with grief, an embodiment of the great caverns of loss, and a bittersweet archive of moments that may haunt as much as they must be penned, and we are so thankful they are with this collection. Fragments of memory and ritual - the poetry runs from and toward the longing, the void, the fading scent of time, the ever present voice in the wind we will into our existence - they allow us to live in the wreckage and come through with some semblance of healing, and even joy.- traci kato-kiriyama, Navigating With(Out) Instruments

Book Disidentifications

  • Author : José Esteban Muñoz
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780816630141
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Disidentifications written by José Esteban Muñoz and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is more to identity than identifying with one's culture or standing solidly against it. Jose Esteban Munoz looks at how those outside the racial and sexual mainstream negotiate majority culture -- not by aligning themselves with or against exclusionary works but rather by transforming these works for their own cultural purposes. Munoz calls this process "disidentification, " and through a study of its workings, he develops a new perspective on minority performance, survival, and activism. Disidentifications is also something of a performance in its own right, an attempt to fashion a queer world by working on, with, and against dominant ideology. Whether examining the process of identification in the work of filmmakers, performance artists, ethnographers, Cuban choteo, forms of gay male mass culture (such as pornography), museums, art photography, camp and drag, or television, Munoz persistently points to the intersecting and short-circuiting of identities and desires that result from misalignments with the cultural and ideological mainstream in contemporary urban America. Munoz calls attention to the world-making properties found in performances by queers of color -- in Carmelita Tropicana's "Camp/Choteo" style politics, Marga Gomez's performances of queer childhood, Vaginal Creme Davis's "Terrorist Drag, " Isaac Julien's critical melancholia, Jean-Michel Basquiat's disidentification with Andy Warhol and pop art, Felix Gonzalez-Torres's performances of "disidentity, " and the political performance of Pedro Zamora, with AIDS, within the otherwise artificial a person environment of the MTV serial The Real World.
