Book excerpt: This is a photography book, and although some tips are offered to aid others in similar photography, it is not an instruction manual nor is it a travel guide. There is very little text. Monument Valley is a spectacular location where hundreds of Hollywood films have been produced and countless scenes for television programs and commercials have been created. If you should be fortunate enough to travel there please bare in mind that Monument Valley is not a national or state park and that it is part of, and belongs to, the Navajo Nation. You are a guest there, you are in a sacred area and you are in their home. Please behave accordingly. The entrance to Monument Valley is just across the Arizona - Utah border in southern Utah but all the monuments are located in Arizona. I have confirmed this with both maps and discussions with the Navajo people who live there. This would not seem to be a point of contention but it has come up all too frequently. If you are taking a photograph with your lens pointed north then the monument you are photographing is in Arizona but the background is in Utah. Monument Valley is rather remote however there is a new hotel, The View Hotel, that is located at the very edge of Monument Valley, is rather nice and has a good restaurant and is only a short walking distance to a very popular vantage point should you wish to take photographs at dawn. I usually stay at the Hampton Inn in the town of Kayenta Arizona. It is a 22 mile drive to the Valley but I often find many photographic opportunities along the way. The following photographs were taken with an assortment of film cameras over a rather long period. This book contains more than 60 photographs all in black and white.

Twentieth-century popular culture made these places icons of the American West, and advertising continues to exploit their significance today. In Rainbow Bridge to Monument Valley, Thomas J. Harvey artfully tells how Navajos and Anglo-Americans created fabrics of meaning out of this stunning desert landscape, space that western novelist Zane Grey called “the storehouse of unlived years,” where a rugged, more authentic life beckoned. Harvey explores the different ways in which the two societies imbued the landscape with deep cultural significance. Navajos long ago incorporated Rainbow Bridge into the complex origin story that embodies their religion and worldview. In the early 1900s, archaeologists crossed paths with Grey in the Rainbow Bridge area. Grey, credited with making the modern western novel popular, sought freedom from the contemporary world and reimagined the landscape for his own purposes. In the process, Harvey shows, Grey erased most of the Navajo inhabitants. This view of the landscape culminated in filmmaker John Ford’s use of Monument Valley as the setting for his epic mid-twentieth-century Westerns. Harvey extends the story into the late twentieth century when environmentalists sought to set aside Rainbow Bridge as a symbolic remnant of nature untainted by modernization. Tourists continue to flock to Monument Valley and Rainbow Bridge, as they have for a century, but the landscapes are most familiar today because of their appearances in advertising. Monument Valley has been used to sell perfume, beer, and sport utility vehicles. Encompassing the history of the Navajo, archaeology, literature, film, environmentalism, and tourism, Rainbow Bridge to Monument Valley explores how these rock formations, Navajo sacred spaces still, have become embedded in the modern identity of the American West—and of the nation itself.

From the first instant that I saw the work of Monet and Renoir in an art galley decades ago I was astonished and admired the work so intently that I resolved to create some images that would at least attempt the world of impressionism even though I must describe myself as much more of an 'Ansel Adams' acolyte. The following images are the result. For those who are interested in such things, all the images contained herein were taken with a wide variety of cameras ranging from a Nikon F3 35mm film camera through a Nikon N8008. The author began photography and photo-journalism in early 1963 when he accepted an offer from his local newspaper to write about and photograph sports events at the Arizona high school where he was a junior. After a stint in the service, he had an opportunity to study photography and printing techniques with Bernard Hoffman, a true gentleman and scholar, and one of the earliest staff photographers for Life Magazine. Since that time he has had thousands of photographs and hundreds of articles published by more than 60 national and international periodicals. He was also a contributing editor for one of them for more than ten years. Topics ran the gamut from professional sports, medicine, archeology, and photography to science. After twenty years away from Arizona he returned in 1985 and it has been the base from which all his photographic excursions are launched. Along with many others he has embraced digital photography but can still be seen, from time to time, peering through the ground glass of a large format camera, hoisting a large medium format 6x7, or indeed still using a 35mm film camera. The photographer currently has fine art photography on exhibit at The Center for Fine Arts in Globe, Arizona, and is currently represented by more than ten stock photo agencies where he has more than 13,000 photographs available for commercial use.
