Book Monument to the Memory of Henry Clay Classic Reprint

Download or read book Monument to the Memory of Henry Clay Classic Reprint written by A. H. Carrier and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monument to the Memory of Henry Clay The object of the present work is two-fold. First, to present in a condensed form a complete Life, and the most important Speeches of Henry Clay; and secondly, to collect, in a form adapted to their preservation, the Eulogies called forth by the death of the great statesman, together with an account of the Obsequies attending his burial. In respect to the first object, it may be said, that the field has already been occupied. In reply, we say that, although the works which have appeared from time to time, and especially the large volumes of Colton, have given us nearly all the information which we can hope to obtain, whether in regard to the public or private life of Henry Clay, yet that they all, and especially those which we have designated, labor under the disadvantage of being too large and too costly for popular circulation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Henry Clay To almost any eye which surveys dispassionately the field of our National History during the last sixty or seventy years, the stately figure of Henry Clay will come at once and prominently into view. No American eye wall ever overlook it. No American pen will ever attempt to dwarf or disparage it. All that Webster was to the North, all that Calhoun was to the South, Clay was to the Great West; perhaps more than all. Neither of these three remarkable men ever commanded the votes of the whole country, or grasped the coveted prize of the Presidency. But together - sometimes in opposition, sometimes in conjunction, and almost always in rivalry - they exercised an influence on public affairs far greater than that of any other three men of their times. They did not leave their peers. Thus far they have had no successors of equal individuality, prominence, and power. Their last signal public efforts were made, side by side, in the Senate of the United States, in support of what were called the Compromises of 1850. Before two years more had elapsed, they were all three in their graves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Speeches of Henry Clay, Vol. 2 Whilst we thus behold the entire failure of all that was foretold against the system, it is a subject of just felicitation to its friends, that all their anticipations of its benefits have been fulfilled, or are in progress of fulfilment. The honorable gentleman from South Carolina has made an allusion to a speech made by me, in 1824, in the other house, in support of the tariff, and to which, otherwise, I should not have particularly referred. But I would ask any one, who can now command the courage to peruse that long produc tion, what principle there laid down is not true? What prediction then made has been falsified by practical experience? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Public Services of Henry Clay The first edition of this work appeared, during the autumn of 1842, at which time, there was no published memoir of Mr. Clay (so far as the writer's knowledge extended) except that by George D. Prentice, Esq., which terminates with the close of John Quincy Adams's administration. To this eloquent biographical sketch, the Author takes pleas ure in acknowledging his indebtedness, for a number of interesting facts. The new and improved edition of his life or clay, now offered to the public, has been carefully revised - some errors have been corrected - several omissions have been supplied - awl the Memoir has been brought down to the spring of 1848. It is hardly necessary to say, that the portrait; which accompanies this edition, is from a painting by linen, taken some twenty years since. It was regarded as a like ness at that time. E. S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Private Correspondence of Henry Clay The editor must crave pardon of numerous persons who have kindly furnished him with letters of Mr. Clay, which could not be inserted for lack Of room, and for other causes. Notwithstanding the rules which he was obliged to adopt, the volume has swollen to un expected dimensions. Where the editor has used the letters of persons now living, he has been very careful not to insert any to the use of which he would imagine they would have any objection. On the contrary, he has used only such as he supposed they would be very willing, if not gratified, to see in such a place. If there should be any exceptions to this rule, the imperative demands for the truth of history in matters on which the parties concerned could not fairly claim to be consulted, must be the apology.
