Book Women s Authorship and the Early Gothic

Download or read book Women s Authorship and the Early Gothic written by Kathleen Hudson and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection examines Gothic works written by women authors in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, with a specific focus on the novels and chapbooks produced by less widely commercially and critically popular writers. Bringing these authors to the forefront of contemporary critical examinations of the Gothic, chapters in this collection examine how these works impacted the development of ‘women’s writing’ and Gothic writing during this time. Offering readers an original look at the literary landscape of the period and the roles of the creative women who defined it, the collection argues that such works reflected a female-centred literary subculture defined by creative exchange and innovation, one that still shapes perceptions of the Gothic mode today. This collection, then, presents an alternative understanding of the legacy of women Gothic authors, anchoring this understanding in complex historical and social contexts and providing a new world of Gothic literature for readers to explore.

Book The Gothic Ideology

Download or read book The Gothic Ideology written by Diane Long Hoeveler and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gothic Ideology argues that in order to modernize and secularize, the British Protestant imaginary needed an 'other' against which it could define itself as a culture and a nation with distinct boundaries. The 'Gothic ideology' is identified as an intense religious anxiety, produced by the aftershocks of the Protestant reformation, the Catholic Counter-Reformation, and the dynastic upheavals produced by both events in England, Germany, and France, and was played out in hundreds of Gothic texts published throughout Europe between the mid-eighteenth century and 1880. This book is the first to read the Gothic ideology through the historical context of both King Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries and the extensive French anti-clerical and pornographic works that were well-known to Horace Walpole and Matthew Lewis. The book argues that Gothic was thoroughly invested in a crude form of anti-Catholicism that fed lower class prejudices against the passage of a variety of Catholic Relief Acts that had been pending in Parliament since 1788 and finally passed in 1829.

Book Gothic writing 1750 1820

Download or read book Gothic writing 1750 1820 written by Robert Miles and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available again in paperback, this provocative study by Robert Miles uses the tools of modern literary theory and criticism to analyse this very distinctive body of texts. Miles introduces the reader to contexts of Gothic in the eigteenth century including its historical development and its placement within the period's concerns with discourse and gender. By using texts ranging from sensational novels such as The Monk and The Mysteries of Udolpho, poetic variations on Gothic by Coleridge, Shelley and Keats, to satirical works on the theme by Jane Austen, Miles presents an intriguing overview of Gothic literature. By drawing extensively on the ideas of Michel Foucault to establish a genealogy he brings Gothic writing in from the margins of 'popular fiction', resituating it at the centre of debate about Romanticism.
