By Lord Lindsay. If we take a telescope mounted with vertical and horizontal motion, these may be converted into equatoreal motion by the addition of a bar of metal or wood. At any convenient distance below the altitude axis of the instrument let a bar be fixed at right an les to the pillar or azimuth axis. In the bar there should be a -shaped slot, through which a string or wire may slide, and be clamped by a screw pressing it into the angle of the V. Let the bar project in the plane of the meridian to such a distance that the angle contained between the bar and a line drawn from the V-shaped slot to the centre of motion of the altitude axis is equal to the latitude of the place of observation. Download or read book Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Vol 29 written by Royal Astronomical Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Vol. 29: Containing Papers, Abstracts of Papers, and Reports of the Proceedings of the Society, From November, 1868, to June, 1869 My object in this Note is to describe one of the other contri vances mentioned in the Report. The apparatus consisted of screens of coloured glasses and other absorptive media, by which I was able to isolate portions of the spectrum. It appeared highly probable that if the parts of the spectrum which then alone remained were identical with those in which the bright lines of the ames occur, these objects would become visible. For this inquiry I obtained a great variety of coloured glasses and other absorptive media. I first examined them with a prism to learn the absorptive power which they exercised on different parts of the spectrum. I then combined them in various ways. These glasses were sometimes employed before the eye, but more frequently by projecting the image of the Sun's edge upon a screen, after the light had been sifted by the coloured media. In making these experiments means were taken that the whole of the Sun's image should be got rid of, in order that the eye, kept in comparative darkness, might be more sensitive to the greatly feebler illumination of the objects sought for. As I had no know ledge of the position in the spectrum of the bright lines, it would have been by accident only if I had succeeded in obtaining a view of the ames. Now that the positions of these lines are known, this method appears to be very promising. Perhaps the light about the red line at C will be most easily isolated. I have a deep ruby glass which cuts off all the spectrum except the extreme red. I have since the observations only been able to make one attempt, when the state of the atmosphere was unfavourable. It is obvious that by this method the form and appearance of these ames could be observed, and the objects measured with accuracy. Oh a possible Method of viewing the Red Flames without an Eclipse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Vol. 39: Containing Papers, Abstracts of Papers, and Reports of the Proceedings of the Society, From November 1878 to November 1879 I may mention that the other evening (july 5) I was surprised to see Satellite IV in transit appear as a dark spot instead of the usual bright point when on the less illumined surface near the edge of the planet; in fact it was at entry nearly as black as its shadow, which was just passin off on the other side. This I know has been seen before, bot with Satellites III and IV, and must, I presume, be attributed to one side of the satellite reflecting less light than the other, or else to some violent changes in its atmosphere. Before it came on to the disk I noticed that it was fainter than usual. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Vol. 23 For the following abstract of Mr. Auwers' paper, On the Irregularities of the Motion of Procyon, and on the Deter mination of the Elements of an obscure Companion of Procyon, the attraction of which will explain these irregularities, the Society and myself are indebted to W. T. Lynn, Esq., Assistant of the Royal Observatory of Greenwich. It may be necessary to correct a misunderstanding that might possibly be produced in the minds of some readers by the expressions of the first paragraph. The irregularities in the annual motions of stars generally, and of Procyon in particular, were first pointed out by Mr. Pond. In the Greenwich Oh servations, 1820-22, is a Table of Right Ascensions of the 36 Stars of the Greenwich Catalogue, reduced to the beginning of the year 1819, from five years' observations with the new Transit Instrument, 1817 - 1821, and compared with Dr. Mas helyne's Catalogue of the year 1805 brought up to the same period the principal discordances are those of a. Capricorni, Sirius, Spica, Procyon. In the Greenwich Observations, 1825, is A Table showing the difference between the predicted and observed N. P.d. Of 45 principal fixed stars for the year 1 the principal discordances are those of a Pegasi, 7 Aguilar, Sirius, Procyon. In the Philosophical Transactions, 1823, page 36, Mr. Pond says, A very great deviation in n.p.d. Will be found in three very bright stars, Capella, Procyon, and Sirius in page 44 he again specifies Procyon and Sirius, and in page 529, he speaks of the impossibility of exactly interpolating or predicting a star's place. Finally, in the Introduction to the Catalogue of 1112 stars, dated June 27, 1833, he says, We can hardly desire a better test of our power of predicting the future position of the stars, than by trying by the same formula how accurately we can interpolate for the past. In a variety of papers, which I have submitted at times to the Royal Society, I have endeavoured to show that with us the latter experiment entirely fails. This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Vol. 26 I. In a former paper I attempted to prove that, before taking their orbits under the influence of the Suns attractions, the Comets i 860 Iii, 1863 I., and 1863 VI., formed a system, that is to say, at short distances from each other they had initial movements of the same direction and velocity. That direction is nearly indicated by the straight line uniting the Sun toy Hydri. At the end of the same paper I promised to extend my researches on the Comets that appeared before 1844. The following table contains all the cases since the year 1556, in which the question may arise about a cometary system, in consequence of the successive apparition of comets whose aphelia approach each other on the sphere.
