Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 23 (thesis year 1978) a total of 10,148 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 220 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 23 reports these submitted in 1978, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book A Monte Carlo Error Analysis Program for Near Mars Finite burn Orbital Transfer Maneuvers

Download or read book A Monte Carlo Error Analysis Program for Near Mars Finite burn Orbital Transfer Maneuvers written by Richard N. Green and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program was developed which performs an error analysis of a minimum-fuel, finite-thrust, transfer maneuver between two Keplerian orbits in the vicinity of Mars. The method of analysis is the Monte Carlo approach where each off-nominal initial orbit is targeted to the desired final orbit. The errors in the initial orbit are described by two covariance matrices of state deviations and tracking errors. The function of the program is to relate these errors to the resulting errors in the final orbit. The equations of motion for the transfer trajectory are those of a spacecraft maneuvering with constant thrust and mass-flow rate in the neighborhood of a single body. The thrust vector is allowed to rotate in a plane with a constant pitch rate. The transfer trajectory is characterized by six control parameters and the final orbit is defined, or partially defined, by the desired target parameters. The program is applicable to the deboost maneuver (hyperbola to ellipse), orbital trim maneuver (ellipse to ellipse), fly-by maneuver (hyperbola to hyperbola), escape maneuvers (ellipse to hyperbola), and deorbit maneuver.

Book Numerical Study of Error Propagation in Monte Carlo Depletion Simulations

Download or read book Numerical Study of Error Propagation in Monte Carlo Depletion Simulations written by Timothy Joseph Wyant and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving computer technology and the desire to more accurately model the heterogeneity of the nuclear reactor environment have made the use of Monte Carlo depletion codes more attractive in recent years, and feasible (if not practical) even for 3-D depletion simulation. However, in this case statistical uncertainty is combined with error propagating through the calculation from previous steps. In an effort to understand this error propagation, four test problems were developed to test error propagation in the fuel assembly and core domains. Three test cases modeled and tracked individual fuel pins in four 17x17 PWR fuel assemblies. A fourth problem modeled a well-characterized 330MWe nuclear reactor core. By changing the code's initial random number seed, the data produced by a series of 19 replica runs of each test case was used to investigate the true and apparent variance in k-eff, pin powers, and number densities of several isotopes. While this study does not intend to develop a predictive model for error propagation, it is hoped that its results can help to identify some common regularities in the behavior of uncertainty in several key parameters.

Book Comparative Analysis of Monte Carlo Simulation and Stochastic Response Surface Method Applied to Water Quality Modeling

Download or read book Comparative Analysis of Monte Carlo Simulation and Stochastic Response Surface Method Applied to Water Quality Modeling written by Farouk Mollah Banna and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compares Monte Carlo simulation, where inputs are represented by probability distribution functions, and the stochastic response surface method (SRSM), where inputs and outputs are approximated using series expansions of standard random variables, in water quality modeling using Streeter Phelps equations. Uses the specific case of water quality problems of the Neuse River in North Carolina to compare these two methods. Seeks to determine how the modeling results representation can be better improved by developing and analyzing their output probability distributions based on input variability, the optimal number of runs for the two methods, and how the two methods compare in terms of results efficiency and computational effort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating work is divided into two main sections. Part I reviews the basic principles of water movement in channels and the mass balance approach common to most models. It also covers the practical usefulness, model peer review, and guidance on model selection and calibration. Part II discusses flow simulation and prediction of time of travel, dye tracing and mixing, heat balance and temperature modeling, and reaeration and volatilization. This interesting, easy-to-read volume includes comprehensive reviews for the use of fluorescent water tracing dyes, longitudinal dispersion, evaporation and wind speed functions, prediction of saturation concentrations of dissolved oxygen, and reaeration coefficients. This book furnishes the reader with appendices which provide a synopsis of available computer models and gives a comprehensive listing of methods used to measure flow rates in rivers, tributaries, and pipes and channels introducing wastewaters into streams. This volume is a valuable, indispensable reference for all researchers, instructors, students in advanced environmental modeling courses, and practicing engineers.

Book Uncertainty and Forecasting of Water Quality

Download or read book Uncertainty and Forecasting of Water Quality written by M.B. Beck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis began its study of water quality modeling and management in 1977, it has been interested in the relations between uncertainty and the problems of model calibration and prediction. The work has focused on the theme of modeling poorly defined environmental systems, a principal topic of the effort devoted to environmental quality control and management. Accounting for the effects of uncertainty was also of central concern to our two case studies of lake eutrophication management, one dealing with Lake Balaton in Hungary and the other with several Austrian lake systems. Thus, in November 1979 we held a meeting at Laxenburg to discuss recent method ological developments in addressing problems associated with uncertainty and forecasting of water quality. This book is based on the proceedings of that meeting. The last few years have seen an increase in awareness of the issue of uncertainty in water quality and ecological modeling. This book is relevant not only to contemporary issues but also to those of the future. A lack of field data will not always be the dominant problem for water quality modeling and management; more sophisticated measuring techniques and more comprehensive monitoring networks will come to be more widely applied. Rather, the important problems of the future are much more likely to emerge from the enhanced facility of data processing and to concern the meaningful interpretation, assimilation., and use of the information thus obtained.
