Book Montana Wildfire Cost Study Technical Report

Download or read book Montana Wildfire Cost Study Technical Report written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To better understand the current and future implications for Montana's taxpayers, Headwaters Economics analyzed daily fire suppression costs across 18 large fires that burned in Montana during 2006 and 2007, systematically distilling out the portion of total fire suppression costs directly associated with housing--that is: the dramatically higher costs required to fight fires in the 'Wildland Urban Interface' ... Key findings of our research include: · Firefighting costs are highly correlated with the number of homes threatened by a fire. · The pattern of development (dense vs. spread out) is an important contributing factor. · When large forest fires burn near homes, costs related to housing usually exceed $1 million per fire. · As few as 150 additional homes threatened by fire can result in a $13 million increase in suppression costs in a single year. · For all agencies involved in fire suppression in Montana, the estimated annual costs related to home protection for 2006 and 2007 were approximately $55 million and $36 million, respectively. · If current development trends continue, fires seasons similar to 2006 and 2007 could cost $15 to $23 million more by 2025, bringing total fire suppression costs associated with homes to between $51 and $79 million dollars. Adjusted for inflation, future costs could be as high as $124 million in 2025. · A conservative estimate is that 25% of all costs of protecting homes from wildfires within Montana are paid for by the state. Therefore, Montana's costs for home protection in 2006 and 2007 are estimated to have been $13.9 million and $9.2 million, respectively. By 2025, Montana's future costs, adjusted for inflation, could be as high as $31 million"--Exec. summary.

Book excerpt: This bestselling author of High Crimes explores what causes forest fires and captures their danger and the heroism of those who fight them. In Megafire, a world-renowned journalist and forest fire expert travels to dangerous and remote wildernesses, as well as to the backyards of people faced with these catastrophes, to look at the heart of this phenomenon and witness firsthand the heroic efforts of the firefighters and scientists racing against time to stop it—or at least to tame these deadly flames. From Colorado to California, China to Canada, head to the frontlines on the ground and in the air, as well as in the laboratories, universities, and federal agencies where this battle rages on. Through this prism of perspectives, Kodas zeroes in on some of the most terrifying environmental disasters in recent years—the Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona that took the lives of nineteen elite “hotshot” firefighters, the Waldo Canyon Fire that overwhelmed the city of Colorado Springs—and more in a page-turning narrative that puts a face on the brave people at the heart of this issue. Megafiredescribes the profound global impact of these fires and will change the way we think about the environment and the precariousness of our world. “I don't know any writer better equipped to explain what's gone wrong than Michael Kodas, who shines a light both on the astonishing bravery of the hotshots on the front lines and on the waste and ineptitude of the politicians and bureaucrats who too often fail them, sometimes with fatal consequences.”—Dan Fagin, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation

Book Burning Down the Cost

Download or read book Burning Down the Cost written by Joe King and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cost of wildfires has been climbing drastically. In 2012, the total estimated cost for Montana wildfire supression was $113.5 million. The goal of this research was to see if it was mathematically possible to minimize wildfire cost while ensuring that a fire is efficiently suppressed. A linear program (LP) was designed to minimize suppression cost while allocating the required hand, air, and equipment crews to specific stages of a wildfire. Two scenarios are implemented into the linear program, where optimal solutions are found. First, a one wildfire scenario is simulated. Secondly, the most extreme fires of Montana's 2012 wildfire season are simulated. Finally, the LP's optimal results are compared and analyzed with the actual 2012 fire results. Based on the model's outcomes, it was found that dispatch centers with more available equipment, ready to suppress a wildfire, had a lower suppression cost. Although the model manages to meet management requirements, it doesn't account for intangible factors that go into decision making. In conclusion, the linear program provides an optimal solution for wildfire decision management, and under given constraints will efficiently determine the lowest cost while meeting suppression requirements.

Book The Economics of Forest Disturbances

Download or read book The Economics of Forest Disturbances written by Thomas P. Holmes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Peter J. Roussopoulos, Director, Southern Research Station The world and its ecosystems are repeatedly punctuated by natural disturbances, and human societies must learn to manage this reality Often severe and unp- dictable, dynamic natural forces disrupt human welfare and alter the structure and composition of natural systems Over the past century, land management ag- cies within the United States have relied on science to improve the sustainable management of natural resources Forest economics research can help advance this scientifc basis by integrating knowledge of forest disturbance processes with their economic causes and consequences As the twenty-frst century unfolds, people increasingly seek the goods and services provided by forest ecosystems, not only for wood supply, clean water, and leisure pursuits, but also to establish residential communities that are removed from the hustle and bustle of urban life As vividly demonstrated during the past few years, Santa Ana winds can blow wildfres down from the mountains of California, incinerating homes as readily as vegetation in the canyons below Hurricanes can fatten large swaths of forest land, while associated foods create havoc for urban and rural residents alike Less dramatic, but more insidious, trees and forest stands are succumbing to exotic insects and diseases, causing economic losses to private property values (including timber) as well as scenic and recreation values As human demands on public and private forests expand, science-based solutions need to be identifed so that social needs can be balanced with the vagaries of forest disturbance processes
