Book excerpt: A land-classification system based upon potential natural vegetation is presented for the forests of Montana. It is based on an intensive 4-year study and reconnaissance sampling of about 1,500 stands. A hierarchical classification of forest sites was developed using the habitat type concept. A total of 9 climax series, 64 habitat types, and 37 additional phases of habitat types are defined. A diagnostic key is provided for field identification of the types based on indicator species used in development of the classification.

Book Montana s Timber Supply

Download or read book Montana s Timber Supply written by Patrick J. Flowers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana's Timber Supply: An Inquiry Into Possible Futures Some analyses (green and others 1985) suggest the possibility of a bleak future. In recent years, industrial lands have contributed 30 to 40 percent of the total log supply while accounting for only about 17 percent of the inventory volume. A related question is: If industrial lands contribute less to the State's timber harvest, can harvests from National Forests or other ownerships offset the decline? Is a decreased level of total timber harvest inevitable? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Montana Logging Utilization 2002

Download or read book Montana Logging Utilization 2002 written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of logging utilization in Montana during 2002 provided logging and product utilization data for sawlog and veneer log harvests in Montana. Results of the study indicate a shift toward greater utilization of smaller diameter material, as 78 percent of the harvested volume in Montana during 2002 came from trees less than 17 inches diameter at breast height. The portion of inventory volume utilized is also increasing, as indicated by decreasing removals factors for growing stock (1.081 cubic feet removed from inventory per cubic foot delivered to the mill) and sawtimber trees (0.961 cubic feet removed per cubic foot delivered to the mill). The study also provided factors for converting volumes to and from Scribner and International 1/4-inch rule log scales, as well as to and from cubic foot volumes.
