Book excerpt: The compilation of this writing in a fictional format was my way of conveying the unquestionable appeal equally to those who are already familiar with Van Gogh as well as to those with less knowledge of art and history. I was always faced with the challenge of finding new ways to inspire my students as a high school art teacher. One way that seemed to work most often was adding some type of adventure to the subject at hand. I invite you to explore the larger-than-life characters from Arizona and Europe from the late 1800s that I have woven into this fictional adventure. Reviews An adventure from beginning to end! Steven has captured the beauty and spirit of the Old Pueblo, its surrounding areas, and what makes it southwest such a treasure. The characters are what make the journey so believable. Well done! (Andy Bastine). I found, while reading Vincent in Tucson, an amazing connection between the historical perspective of his work and a fictional story that connected me to a life (Don Brown; deputy superintendent, Arizona Department of Education). More than a story, its a journey into two artists mindsVincent and the author. It takes a what-if story to a did-it story. You will crave to know more about Vincents life and death (Jodi Smith, art aficionado). Only a very talented artist and teacher could possibly create this fascinating fictional account of Vincent van Goghs time in Tucson, Arizona (Gary Bruner, PhD; retired superintendent, Bend, Oregon public schools). By any standard, one would have to say that, this time, Bye has come up with a doozy (J. C. Martin, Arizona Daily Star book reviewer).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the celebrated Australian short-story writer and novelist John Clanchy comes a brilliant new collection of prize-winning short stories. These diverse and captivating tales are testimony to Clanchy's mastery of voices and talent for story telling - his greatest gift is his ability to transport the reader inside the minds of a range of remarkably different characters. The characters include a mix of men, women and children often at a crossroads in their lives. 'How did I get here?' they ask, and sometimes arrive at surprising answers. A husband in the midst of a terrifying, yet occasionally comic, wrestle for his sanity fights a losing battle to save his marriage. A girl steps out of her own portrait to recount the death of the famous artist who painted her. A doctor, driving late on a country road, runs down a woman and is forced to devise his own punishment. A man in middle age travels the length of the Australian continent to uncover a secret that has tormented him since his youth. And, in the title story, a fragile woman and her beautiful daughter struggle to find love and understanding after decades of conflict. With brilliant reversals and surprises around every corner, these moving stories are often humorous and sensuous, frequently challenging, and always entertaining.

Book Abandoned Children

Download or read book Abandoned Children written by Rachel G. Fuchs and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nineteenth-century France, parents abandoned their children in overwhelming numbers--up to 20 percent of live births in the Parisian area. The infants were left at state-run homes and were then transferred to rural wet nurses and foster parents. Their chances of survival were slim, but with alterations in state policy, economic and medical development, and changing attitudes toward children and the family, their chances had significantly improved by the end of the century. Rachel Fuchs has drawn on newly discovered archival sources and previously untapped documents of the Paris foundling home in order to depict the actual conditions of abandoned children and to reveal the bureaucratic and political response. This study traces the evolution of French social policy from early attempts to limit welfare to later efforts to increase social programs and influence family life. Abandoned Children illuminates in detail the family life of nineteenth-century French poor. It shows how French social policy with respect to abandoned children sought to create an economically useful and politically neutral underclass out of a segment of the population that might otherwise have been an economic drain and a potential political threat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is Love. To believe in this God of unconditional Love is a lived experience in each person and in each generation everywhere on the globe and all different cultures and historical periods. In the beginning of the nineteenth century we notice in the south of the Netherlands a strong movement to renew and to actualise the Catholic faith in the concrete circumstances of poverty and political neglect. In this way the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity Daughters of Mary and Joseph was founded on 7 July 1820 in ’s Hertogenbosch. Similar to several other congregations in the same period St Vincent de Paul was their principal source of inspiration, determined their charism and remained at the centre of their spirituality. Religious life is essentially a lived experience of faith in which concrete persons touched by the incomprehensible Love of God dedicate their life in total surrender to this Love. As a result, they obey to the divine calling to be wholly transformed in love and to become docile instruments of God’s overwhelming Charity towards all vulnerable persons - young and old – their brothers and sisters who are stripped of their human dignity, humiliated and enslaved in many subtle ways. In this Vincentian congregation this divine vocation of Charity was originally implemented as a specific service to the education of blind and deaf children but widened to the care of other forgotten groups like victims of trafficking in women and discrimination or subordination of women.
