Download or read book Money and the Mechanism of Exchange Illustrated written by William Stanley Jevons and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jevons's formative 1875 classic work came into print at the height of interest in gold, silver, and international monetary standards. Refreshingly written, widely quoted, and authoritatively researched, the book begins with the origins of money and works its way through to international banking and credit. Of particular interest are the clear discussions of Gresham's Law (Ch. VIII), competitively supplied money (Ch. VII), and fractional-reserve- and Free-banking (Ch. XVII-XVIII and XXIV). Also: If you think the only reason to not use coins worth their weight in precious metal is their weight, I recommend Chapter X for an excellent reminder of additional drawbacks. "

Book Readings in Money and Banking

Download or read book Readings in Money and Banking written by Chester Arthur Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Money and Banking: Selected and Adapted Designed mainly for class room use in connection with one of the introductory manuals on the subject of Money and Banking or of Money and Currency, this volume, in itself, lays no claim to completeness. Where its use is contem plated the problems of emphasis and proportion are, accord ingly, to be solved by the selection of one or another of the available texts, or by the choice of supplementary lecture topics and materials. The contents of the introductory manuals are so divergent in character as to render possible combinations of text and readings that will include, it is hoped, matter of such range and variety as may be desired. Fullness of treatment has been attempted, however, in the chapters dealing with the important recent developments in the mechanism of exchange, and my aim has been through out to Select and, in many instances, to adapt with a view to meeting the wants of those who are interested chiefly in the modern phases of the subject. Consider, for instance, the plight Of the shoemaker under such a system. He can have meat for his dinner only when he can find a butcher who will exchange meat directly for shoes. If he needs pins, he can buy them only in lots Of thousands, because he cannot subdivide a pair Of shoes. He cannot readily produce his goods in quantity, because the more he produces the larger will be his mar keting problems. In fact, a man can scarcely become exclusively a shoemaker in a com munity which makes no use of money, nor can there be any other sort Of specialist. Book The Nature and Uses of Money and Mixed Currency

Download or read book The Nature and Uses of Money and Mixed Currency written by Amasa Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Uses of Money and Mixed Currency: With a History of the Wickaboag Bank N 0 person produces everything he wishes to consume. Even in savage life, one man can procure fish, another venison most advantageously, and they will accordingly wish to exchange pro ducts. This is called barter, and is the first and Simplest form of exchange. AS the civilized state appears, the necessity for an interchange of commodities is vastly increased. The hatter, tailor, shoe maker, farmer, and fisherman, all must exchange with each other, and traffic becomes one of the greatest departments of industry. But barter, under these circumstances, is a very inconvenient and clumsy mode of effecting the desired object. For example, the farmer proposes to exchange wheat for a hat; but the hatter, having already obtained all the wheat he wants, tells the farmer, that if he will procure him a table, he will give him a hat in exchange for it. The farmer now goes to the cabinet-maker and offers to exchange wheat for a table; but the cabinet-maker, already supplied with wheat, tells him if he will procure a pair of boots, he Will let him have a table. The farmer now goes to the bootmaker, who, we will suppose, is willing to take. Wheat, and the farmer gets the boots. With these he procures a table, with which, in turn, he gets the object he desired viz., a hat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
