Book The Heart of Economic Reform

Download or read book The Heart of Economic Reform written by Donald Daochi Tong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002.Banking reform lies at the heart of economic reform in China and is central to sustaining the countries high economic growth. This timely book covers an important economic policy issue in China, namely the existing and potential roles of the financial sector in the development of the Chinese economy. It explores for the first time the relationship between the reforms of the financial sector, of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and of the social welfare system. Donald D. Tong presents a wealth of valuable data accompanied by original insights and interpretations. The author also examines the original estimates of the cost of the social welfare burden given that social services such as old age pension, housing, healthcare and education are provided by the SOEs rather than by the private or public sector directly.

Book The Fate of British and French Firms in China 1949 54

Download or read book The Fate of British and French Firms in China 1949 54 written by A. Shai and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-10-29 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a somewhat different view of international or diplomatic history by concentrating on the more profound elements of sino-foreign relations, namely the economic and the commercial, especially with regard to Britain and France. The immediate post-revolutionary period in China is viewed here in the wider context of Britain and France's post-imperial decline and expressions such as 'imperialism imprisoned' and 'captive capitalism' are some new and interchangeable terms employed in this context. In contrast to the traditional interpretation that Chinese policies regarding the old imperial powers involved nationalization of foreign companies through the expropriation of their property, this study shows that almost no such practice took place. Rather, instances of appropriation only occurred following an indirect, subtle and protracted process. It is precisely because of the uniqueness of the process and its relatively long duration that the new regime in China succeeded in achieving its goals, perhaps even exceeding them. This study is based on hitherto inaccessible public, private and company archives in Britain, France and China.

Book Japan s Foreign Policy in the 1990s

Download or read book Japan s Foreign Policy in the 1990s written by R. Drifte and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-05-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at Japan's foreign policy at the regional and global level from a power perspective. It argues that Japan is no longer an economic superpower while satisfying itself with the posture of a political pygmy. Instead Japan is increasingly translating its economic power into influence over the perceptions, intentions, options and material circumstances of other people. This new power posture has been referred to as 'civilian power' but is no less effective for national interest than military power was in the past. The present economic difficulties and the political upheaval have not significantly dented Japan's power.

Book Managing the British Economy in the 1960s A Treasury Perspective

Download or read book Managing the British Economy in the 1960s A Treasury Perspective written by Sir Alec Cairncross and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Managing the British Economy in the 1960s Sir Alec Cairncross, who was Economic Adviser to HMG in 1961-64 and Head of the newly-created Government Economic Service in 1964-69, tells the inside story of the making of economic policy under four Chancellors of the Exchequer between 1960 and 1970, first under a Conservative government then under a Labour government. He describes how the Treasury dealt with a whole succession of crises and experimented with many new departures of policy over the decade: for example, the efforts to engage in long-term planning, form a workable incomes policy, make use of new taxes for new purposes and enter the European Community. In parallel with the 1990s, the story is dominated by the effort to avoid devaluation followed by the struggle to make it work and keep the pound from sliding further.

Book History and Literature in Contemporary Russia

Download or read book History and Literature in Contemporary Russia written by R. Marsh and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-08-09 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1985 Russia has experienced a dramatic cultural and social revolution. Rosalind Marsh presents the first study encompassing one important aspect of this process, that is the major part which literature has played in reassessing the past, transforming public opinion, and hence in promoting political change in Russia. She provides a chronology of literary politics in this period, and analyses the content and influence of newly published literature on a variety of historical themes, including Stalin and Stalinism, Lenin, the Civil War, the February and October Revolutions and the fall of Tsarism. She explores the heated moral and political debates inspired among different sections of Russian society by the works of many authors, including Rybakov, Solzhenitsyn, Grossman, Bunin and Gorky.

Book Japan s Alliance Politics and Defence Production

Download or read book Japan s Alliance Politics and Defence Production written by N. Renwick and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-08-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's alliance with the United States is examined with reference to defence production and technology-sharing. The alliance's post-Cold-War relevance is considered. It is argued that there is a danger of significant tensions arising in the relationship from parallel rather than identical national interests. A widening gap between the respective interests forms a potentially fatal flaw in the relationship. Failure to move beyond bilateralism to multilateral answers threatens to undermine the search for regional peace.
