Book excerpt: "Ethereal visions: Piet Mondrian and Cubism" examines how revolutionary discoveries like the X-ray and other aspects of electromagnetism, including the ether, relate to Piet Mondrian's artistic development during his first stay in Paris (1912-1914). Mondrian, a pioneer of geometric abstraction, believed in the transformative power of the artist to reveal a universal beauty that is veiled by the appearances of nature. While scholarship on the artist has shown that Theosophical theories inspired him, it has neglected to address scientific elements central to his occult sources that may have suggested the tenable means for him to depict 'abstract reality.' As has been demonstrated to be the case with Cubism, the new science testified to the existence of an unseen reality and generated a stimulating new context for pictorial innovation. This thesis explores the scientific discourse underlying Theosophy and Cubism and contextualizes Mondrian's interest in both movements. I argue that the ether of space presented an important source for the artist, as indicated by his writings and innovative artwork from his Cubist period. In those paintings, forms appear as if to dematerialize before the viewer's eyes, preparing the way for Mondrian's bold abstractions to follow.
