Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediaevalia Lovaniensia 40Medieval translators played an important role in the development and evolution of a scientific lexicon. At a time when most scholars deferred to authority, the translations of canonical texts assumed great importance. Moreover, translation occurred at two levels in the Middle Ages. First, Greek or Arabic texts were translated into the learned language, Latin. Second, Latin texts became source texts themselves, to be translated into the vernaculars as their importance across Europe started to increase. The situation of the respective translators at these two levels was fundamentally different: whereas the former could rely on a long tradition of scientific discourse, the latter had the enormous responsibility of actually developing a scientific vocabulary. The contributions in the present volume investigate both levels, greatly illuminating the emergence of the scientific terminology and concepts that became so fundamental in early modern intellectual discourse. The scientific disciplines covered in the book include, among others, medicine, biology, astronomy, and physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I WAS seventeen. She was called Uranie. Was Uranie, then, a young girl, fair, with blue eyes, innocent, but eager for knowledge? No, she was simply what she has always been, one of the nine muses; she who presided over astronomy, and whose celestial glance animated and directed the spheral choir; she was the heavenly idea hovering above earthly dullness; she had neither the palpitating flesh, nor the heart whose pulsations can be transmitted through space, nor the soft warmth of humanity; but she existed, nevertheless, in a sort of ideal world, superior to humanity, and always pure; and yet she was human enough in name and form to produce in the soul of a youth a vivid and profound impression; to awaken in that soul an undefined and undefinable sentiment of admiration: almost of love.

Book Etudes D astronomie Byzantine

Download or read book Etudes D astronomie Byzantine written by Anne Tihon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1994 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byzantine science has been a largely neglected subject: Byzantinists, whether dealing with the history or the literature, have most often been deterred by the technicalities; historians of Greek science have been more attracted to earlier periods. Yet, even if science in the Byzantine world may not have attained the levels of achievement of the Alexandrian period, or of the Islamic world, it is clear that it was the focus of serious scholarship, and this deserves equally serious investigation. Anne Tihon has been in the forefront of those bringing to light the wealth of unpublished texts. Her final study here presents an overview of scientific teaching in Byzantium, while other articles deal specifically with astronomy from the 9th to the 15th century. They look in particular at the relations between Byzantine and Islamic astronomy, and at calculations of the planets and eclipses.

Written to friends and fellow Surrealists such as Pablo Picasso, Andre Derain and Max Ernst, the poems in this collection date from 1919-1936 spanning Breton's involvement with Dadaism and his founding and development of Surrealism. The range of poetic forms, from the early collage compositions to the Five Dreams' of Earthlight and the incantatory love poem 'Free Union', reveals Breton's compositional methods and styles.'
