Book excerpt: A revelatory and timely look at how technology boosts our cognitive abilities—making us smarter, more productive, and more creative than ever It’s undeniable—technology is changing the way we think. But is it for the better? Amid a chorus of doomsayers, Clive Thompson delivers a resounding “yes.” In Smarter Than You Think, Thompson shows that every technological innovation—from the written word to the printing press to the telegraph—has provoked the very same anxieties that plague us today. We panic that life will never be the same, that our attentions are eroding, that culture is being trivialized. But, as in the past, we adapt—learning to use the new and retaining what is good of the old. Smarter Than You Think embraces and extols this transformation, presenting an exciting vision of the present and the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knit robots, build spaceships, and shape the future. Extraordinary short stories about gender, artificial intelligence and the art of building something new. Mother of Invention features the work of Seanan McGuire, Ambelin Kwaymullina, Nisi Shawl, John Chu, Justina Robson and more. A speculative fiction anthology of diverse, challenging stories about gender and artificial intelligence. From Pygmalion and Galatea to Frankenstein, Ex Machina and Person of Interest, the fictional landscape so often frames cisgender men as the creators of artificial life, leading to the same kinds of stories being told over and over. We want to bring some genuine revolution to the way that artificial intelligence stories are told, and how they intersect with gender identity, parenthood, sexuality, war, and the future of our species. How can we interrogate the gendered assumptions around the making of robots compared with the making of babies? Can computers learn to speak in a code beyond the (gender) binary? If necessity is the mother of invention, what exciting AI might come to exist in the hands of a more diverse range of innovators? Essay: Reflecting on Indigenous Worlds, Indigenous Futurisms and Artificial Intelligence by Ambelin Kwaymullina - Winner of William Atheling Jr Award for Criticism or Review

Book Turn of the Century

Download or read book Turn of the Century written by Kurt Andersen and published by Delta. This book was released on 2011-03-09 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As big and exciting as the next century, this is a novel of real life at our giddy, feverish, topsy-turvy edge of the millennium. Turn of the Century is a good old-fashioned novel about the day after tomorrow--an uproarious, exquisitely observed panorama of our world as the twentieth century morphs into the twenty-first, transforming family, marriage, and friendship and propelled by the supercharged global businesses and new technologies that make everyone's lives shake and spin a little faster. As the year 2000 progresses, George Mactier and Lizzie Zimbalist, ten years married, are caught up in the whirl of their centrifugally accelerating lives. George is a TV producer for the upstart network MBC, launching a truly and weirdly groundbreaking new show that blurs the line between fact and fiction. Lizzie is a software entrepreneur dealing with the breakneck pleasures and pains of running her own company in an industry where the rules are rewritten daily. Rocketing between Los An-geles and Seattle, with occasional stopovers at home in Manhattan for tag-team parenting of their three children, George and Lizzie are the kind of businesspeople who, growing up in the sixties and seventies, never dreamed they would end up in business. They're too busy to spend the money that's rolling in, and too smart not to feel ambivalent about their crazed, high-gloss existences, but nothing seems to slow the roller-coaster momentum of their inter-secting lives and careers. However, after Lizzie, recovering from a Microsoft deal gone awry, becomes a confidante and adviser to George's boss, billionaire media mogul Harold Mose, the couple discovers that no amount of sophisticated spin can obscure basic instincts: envy, greed, suspicion, sexual temptation--and, maybe, love. When they and their children are finally drawn into a thrilling, high-tech corporate hoax that sends Wall Street reeling (and makes one person very, very rich), George and Lizzie can only marvel at life's oversized surprises and hold on for dear life. Like Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities, Kurt Andersen's Turn of the Century lays bare the follies of our age with laser-beam precision, creating memorable characters and dissecting the ways we think, speak, and navigate this new era of extreme capitalism and mind-boggling technology. Entertaining, imaginative, knowing, and wise, Turn of the Century is a richly plotted comedy of manners about the way we live now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting: Washington, D.C. Tim Overstreet, an itinerant hobo down on his luck, is in his third year of riding the rails. But his travail is over when he finds his "lucky coin," and the discovery sends his fortunes in another direction. At the same time, in Washington, D. C., a new president, Virgil Hammerfeld, is taking office. He is elected in a surprise vote and therefore lacks a staff to carry out his policies. Thank goodness for the first lady, Lucia Hammerfeld. She sparks the brilliant concept of "going out into the street to seek the common man and—woman." Thus, the Kiddie Corps Cabinet made up of Tim Overstreet, Barbara Harrison (the feminist), and Bill Bacon (the former drunk), is formed. Things soon go astray with the Corp. There's the little matter of the sex ring at the Chinese embassy, the breach of security at the State Department, and the bomb threat at the Soviet embassy. And—to make matters worse, a chimp escapes from a circus which is performing at the White House. This lovable little guy manages to creep into the Oval Office and place a call to the Kremlin's new premier—Sherinov. Sherinov is not known for his command of English but—not to worry for he has an expert interpreter on his staff, Major Mirinev. Or so he thinks. Mirinev, out with an illness, is replaced by Major Koslov who is rushed into action. However, Koslov's "interpretation" of the chimp's "cheeping" over the hot line leaves much to be desired. An international incident ensues. The push to resolve the crisis, the disastrous summit at Camp David, leave both world leaders with much to ponder as they lick their wounds in their hospital beds. The chimp has made a chump of them all.
