Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book • Daily Beast Best Nonfiction of 2014 • Inc. Magazine's Most Thought-Provoking Books of the Year “Man is born free, but he is everywhere in cubicles.” How did we get from Scrooge’s office to “Office Space”? From bookkeepers in dark countinghouses to freelancers in bright cafes? What would the world be like without the vertical file cabinet? What would the world be like without the office at all? In Cubed, Nikil Saval chronicles the evolution of the office in a fascinating, often funny, and sometimes disturbing anatomy of the white-collar world and how it came to be the way it is. Drawing on the history of architecture and business, as well as a host of pop culture artifacts—from Mad Men to Dilbert (and, yes, The Office)—and ranging in time from the earliest clerical houses to the surprisingly utopian origins of the cubicle to the funhouse campuses of Silicon Valley, Cubed is an all-encompassing investigation into the way we work, why we do it the way we do (and often don’t like it), and how we might do better.

Book The Mommy Myth

Download or read book The Mommy Myth written by Susan Douglas and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2005-02-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, the provocative book that has ignited fiery debate and created a dialogue among women about the state of motherhood today. In THE MOMMY MYTH, Susan Douglas and Meredith Michaels turn their 'sharp, funny, and fed-up prose' (San Diego Union Tribune) toward the cult of the new momism, a trend in Western culture that suggests that women can only achieve contentment through the perfection of mothering. Even so, the standards of this ideal remain out of reach, no matter how hard women try to 'have it all'. THE MOMMY MYTH skilfully maps the distance travelled from the days when THE FEMININE MYSTIQUE demanded more for women than keeping house and raising children, to today's not-so-subtle pressure to reverse this trend. A must-read for every woman.

Book Stuff n Nonsense

Download or read book Stuff n Nonsense written by Harry H. Bash and published by First Books. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of "my STUFF" (as George Carlin might have me refer to it) includes ruminations, essays and, frankly, spoofs that I wrote during the last decade of the twentieth century through the first decade of the twenty-first. Admittedly and predictably, some of the items betray my long-term affiliation with and dedication to the discipline of sociology. Throughout my career, I succeeded in ignoring Archibald MacLeish's warning not to "commit a social science," but I did manage to heed his other caution not to "sit with statisticians." Now, in items some of which bear an affinity to sociology, I am not above taking liberties that exceed the bounds imposed by professional sociological constraints. Thus, I commit value-judgments, I trifle with the ludicrous, and I allow myself to be opinionated!

Book Billionaire Romance Series

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enjoy this billionaire bad boy romance at a terrific discount. This is a steamy, sweet, billionaire romance Box-Set packed full of gorgeous alpha males and plenty of steam to keep the reading pleasure going all night long. The Widow's First Kiss (Dreams Fulfilled Book One) When the prettiest young widow in the world comes walking into my life with her adorable daughter, I fall pretty damn fast. I've put my career first for most of my life, and now that I'm past forty, I'm starting to wonder if it's time to think about all the things I sacrificed. Like having a family. Having a sweet face to wake up to in the morning, and loving arms to fall into at night. Lorena just might be the right person to fix all of that for me. Winning her over is going to take some work; she has a baby daughter to protect, along with her own broken heart. But that's not the complication I'm worried about. My ex, expert gold digger Andrea Case, is inserting herself into my family's Christmas celebration, manipulating my mother into making sure she can stay. Is she going to ruin Christmas? Or can I find out a way to save it for all of us? Lucky's Naughty Angel (Dreams Fulfilled Book Two) Aaron "Lucky" Gates never really had much luck-in love or in life. Dragged into a biker gang by a combination of desperation and pressure from his reckless older brother, Daniel, Aaron took the fall for an assault Daniel committed and spent ten years behind bars. Now, he's a bouncer at Phoenicia's only nightspot, struggling to rebuild his life while his brother keeps trying to coax him back into the gang. The one bright spot in his life, besides his friends at the job and his rescue dog Moose, is the sweet, beautiful girl he volunteers alongside at the church. Two problems: she's only twenty-one, and she's Reverend Alderson's daughter. He's headed toward forty and has no business sniffing around a girl who's so pure she could probably draw a whole herd of unicorns. Or so he thinks. A Kiss of Winter (Dreams Fulfilled Book 3) David and I don't talk about our short-lived marriage. It gets in the way of our friendship and our partnership. We're supposed to be trying to explain the inexplicable-of the paranormal variety, not the romantic-and bickering about our ill-fated romance isn't the way to do it. We were so young back then, and though he was never able to satisfy me when we were both inexperienced and didn't have a clue, being cooped up with him in this romantic little town has me noticing how much David has changed-and has me wondering just how much he's truly learned in the years since we broke up. With mistletoe hanging everywhere in this town, there's no doubt that love is in the air. But can that love be ours, or did we already waste our one chance? Even Millicent's best friends in The Wunderkind Club are ready to give up on her inventions. Bully-Be-Gone, her latest creation, should be the breakthrough Millicent needs. After all, her formula for thwarting the enemies of overachievers everywhere is foolproof. Almost foolproof. Before long, Millicent has a disaster of monumental proportions on her hands. With only days to concoct an antidote, her friendships -- and her future as an inventor -- hang in the balance. Book Piecing It All Together

Download or read book Piecing It All Together written by Kathleen Lindsey and published by Elm Hill. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piecing it all Together: A Collection of Memoirs depicts various events in my life. The book symbolizes my lifelong story pieced into my imaginary quilt. God and his grace is the strong doubled threads that helped piece my quilted blocks together into a God-given masterpiece. Many years ago, God gave me a special gift - the art of quilt making. In my autobiography, I reveal how I have pieced my sometimes-difficult life together. As a child, I always wanted answers to questions like, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” I was born in the Baby Boomer era, which was a time when children were seen and not heard. As an adult, I have become a voice of utterance through my deliverance in which God has set me free! Through the years I have faced many unpredictable and grievous encounters. I lost my mom at the age of six. When my son was killed by a drunk driver, I wanted to be angry with God, “Why God, why my son? There are so many bad people in this world, Lord.” But He sent me a comforter, the Holy Spirit. I faced many difficult times during my life. Times when I was hungry, the time when I almost drowned, multiple times I was overcome by carbon monoxide, received beatings so much that it broke my spirit, and other occurrences that young children or adults should not have to suffer for the sake of pleasing others. As a young bride I encountered numerous marital problems. Eventually prayer and perseverance made our marital union grow stronger. My faith in God helped me to rise above my difficult dilemmas. He was always there beside me and guiding my footsteps. Today, I enjoy the pleasures and satisfaction of events that life brings. I chose joy! Being a child of God, daughter of the King, and woman of faith, I thank Him every day for loving me, forgiving me, helping me to forgive others, and bringing me comfort and joy in my darkest hours. I thank Him for lifting me up with laughter and joy when I am overwhelmed with love and happiness. He is a Mighty Good God!
