Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editorial Reviews 2021-12-14 A teenage crush gets interrupted by a horrible murder in this debut YA novel. It’s the summer of 1962. Eighteen-year-old Paul Dawson just needs to make it through his senior year of high school and then he can leave suburban Caroline Hills in upstate New York behind to become a writer. Until then, he’s stuck lying in his bedroom, playing Roy Orbison songs over and over, and daydreaming about what it would be like to have a girlfriend. His handsome twin brother, Bobby, doesn’t have that problem. He’s the star quarterback; he’s dating the head cheerleader; and he’s also seeing Betty Jo Randall on the side. Then, one day, the perfect girl for Paul appears out of the blue and moves in right next door. “In another life, she must have been a mermaid,” thinks Paul, spying on her over the fence. “Someone that lovely can’t be just anybody. The sky gave her his grey blue eyes. Her rippling red hair cascades down her back like a waterfall. The wind loves her hair. I have never seen a girl let the wind have a way with her hair if she could help it before.” Jenny Winters has just moved in with her grandmother in Caroline Hills after her mother—with whom she’s never had a great relationship—kicked her out of the house for reasons the young woman would prefer not to talk about. Paul will do anything to hang out with Jenny, and she will do anything to stir up some trouble, which is how the two end up breaking into the lake house of the local doctor on the Fourth of July. The same day, Betty Jo is raped and killed—and Bobby is the obvious suspect. But Paul and Jenny think they may have seen the actual murderer, though they’ll need proof if anyone is going to believe them. Can the two outsiders crack the case open and save the town from a killer? And can Paul figure out a way to win the heart of his emotionally unavailable crush? Williams’ prose is lively and smooth. While many of the characters feel like types, she imbues them with energy and humor that make them fresh. The narration shifts between Paul and Jenny, who are both delightfully angst-y, albeit in different ways. Here, Paul panics when Jenny instigates some spontaneous skinny-dipping at the lake: “I empty my pockets. I throw out my wallet, my pocket knife, my admission tickets to the fair, and some folded pieces of paper. I take off my socks and shoes….I pull off my belt so slowly. I don’t know what to do. What would Bobby do? Oh, hell. He’d already be in the lake now.” The characterization, especially the richness of the protagonists’ inner lives, helps the novel to feel bigger than its mystery plot. The author manages to capture the promise and danger of being young, particularly the dynamic of a teenage relationship where one person has lived a lot more life than the other. Readers will look forward to Williams’ future offerings. An immersive, bracing mystery with a big heart. Kirkus Reviews

Book Hell and Back

Download or read book Hell and Back written by Optimum Vizhan and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is my Hell and Back story. I was in two wars; one with Korea and one with my wife. My story starts during the Great Depression of the Twentieth Century; on my father’s self-sustaining farm. Before the age of five, my family’s pet sheep, rammed my forehead into the tractor’s steel wheel; leaving a visible “V” scar, on my head for the rest of my life. This “V” was proof; that God would give me victory, over hell throughout my life. Be it near death experiences; on the farm, in war, driving vehicles, building homes, marriage, heart attack, multiple bypasses and the lost of my free movie sweet heart. I learned how to be at peace with myself and God. This peace allowed me to face my hells head on; witness God walking me through them, establish me again and take me through the next season of my life. My Story finishes, with it being a navigational inspiration tool; that guides us and the generations to come, through our hell and backs. Included are my Hell and Back Survival TipsTM that guided me through my two wars. Plus the Law of Unconditional Love, I discovered while in my two wars.

Book excerpt: The bestselling author of The Martian returns with an irresistible new near-future thriller—a heist story set on the moon. Jasmine Bashara never signed up to be a hero. She just wanted to get rich. Not crazy, eccentric-billionaire rich, like many of the visitors to her hometown of Artemis, humanity’s first and only lunar colony. Just rich enough to move out of her coffin-sized apartment and eat something better than flavored algae. Rich enough to pay off a debt she’s owed for a long time. So when a chance at a huge score finally comes her way, Jazz can’t say no. Sure, it requires her to graduate from small-time smuggler to full-on criminal mastermind. And it calls for a particular combination of cunning, technical skills, and large explosions—not to mention sheer brazen swagger. But Jazz has never run into a challenge her intellect can’t handle, and she figures she’s got the ‘swagger’ part down. The trouble is, engineering the perfect crime is just the start of Jazz’s problems. Because her little heist is about to land her in the middle of a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself. Trapped between competing forces, pursued by a killer and the law alike, even Jazz has to admit she’s in way over her head. She’ll have to hatch a truly spectacular scheme to have a chance at staying alive and saving her city. Jazz is no hero, but she is a very good criminal. That’ll have to do. Propelled by its heroine’s wisecracking voice, set in a city that’s at once stunningly imagined and intimately familiar, and brimming over with clever problem-solving and heist-y fun, Artemis is another irresistible brew of science, suspense, and humor from #1 bestselling author Andy Weir.

Short stories about life’s humorous, happy, and dark moments. Some of the stories are from my years in nursing, Steve's clumsiness and my cooking disasters might make you spit out your coffee laughing. The stories of my pets will put a warm smile on your face, and the stories about life's darker moments might make you wipe a tear or two. Rainbows and dark clouds are part of life, Without darkness, there can be no light. Without moments that make us cry, We can’t enjoy moments that make us smile. Without moments that make us laugh, We can’t get through moments that make us sad. ~Erika M Szabo Editorial review: The Rainbows and Clouds by Erika M Szabo is a collection of fun anecdotes, heartwarming stories, and slice-of-life tales that evoke a wide range of emotions. It's impossible to choose a favorite story because I loved them all, particularly the tales that explored the challenges of having a pet. There are several stories within this collection that explore the best - and the worst - of humanity. We are reminded that not everything, or everyone, is what they appear to be and that the best things in life are often surprises. I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone! It truly is something special. ~Tricia Drammeh

This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve Reider is the "doctor of dogdom," the "pooch prognosticator," the "wizard of woof," the "muse of mutts," and the "canine clarion." Nobody explains and describes the touching and hilarious intersection between the world of dogs and their human partners like Steve Reider. In his book Somedays You're the Dog, Somedays You're the Fire Hydrant, Steve has captured the wonderful, touching, hilarious, mystical, and precious relationships between dogs and humans in ways that anyone who has ever had a dog will understand. His stories and their accompanying illustrations will make you howl with laughter while simultaneously encourage you to reflect on the meaning of life. Most importantly, you will deeply appreciate how the world seen through a dog's eyes provides a fitting metaphor for our human foibles and imperfections. Somedays You're the Dog, Somedays You're the Fire Hydrant, is without question a funny book. But, when one steps back a minute and considers its' broader message, it becomes clear that Steve Reider has given us a unique "window" through which we can see the many ways that dogs help to cast a brighter light on the joys, sorrows, frustrations, contradictions, and hilarities of our own lives and of our fellow humans.
