Book Peterson Reference Guide To Molt In North American Birds

Download or read book Peterson Reference Guide To Molt In North American Birds written by Steve N. G. Howell and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most observers, molt seems an overwhelming subject. But birders use many aspects of molt more than they realize—to distinguish juvenile birds from adults, to pick out an individual hummingbird from among dozens visiting a feeder, and much more. And for those whose interest goes beyond simply identifying birds, questions such as What triggers molt to start? How fast do feathers grow? and How long do they last? offer a fascinating window into the lives of birds. Put plainly, molt relates in some way to everything a bird does, including where it lives, what it eats, and how far it migrates. Here, for the first time, molt is presented for the nonscientist. Molt is very orderly and built on only four underlying strategies: simple basic, complex basic, simple alternate, and complex alternate. This book clearly lays out these strategies, relates them to aspects of life history, such as habitat and migration, and makes this important subject accessible.

Book Molt in Neotropical Birds

Download or read book Molt in Neotropical Birds written by Erik I. Johnson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molt is an important avian life history event in which feathers are shed and replaced. The timing, duration, seasonality, extent and pattern of molt follows certain strategies and this book reviews and describes these strategies for nearly 190 species based on information gathered from a 30-year study of Central Amazonian birds. Most species accounts are illustrated with several color photos focusing on wing and tail feather molt, molt limits, and how to use these patterns to accurately age birds. Published in collaboration with and on behalf of the American Ornithological Society, this volume in the highly-regarded Studies in Avian Biology series is a rich source of life history information for ornithologists working on tropical birds.

Book Biology of the Land Crabs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Warren W. Burggren
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1988-04-29
  • ISBN : 9780521306904
  • Pages : 504 pages

Download or read book Biology of the Land Crabs written by Warren W. Burggren and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-04-29 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in land crabs has burgeoned as biologists have increasingly focused on the evolution of terrestriality. Before the publication of this volume in 1988, there had been no single comprehensive source of information to serve biologists interested in the diverse aspects of terrestrial decapod crustacean. Biology of the Land Crabs was the first synthesis of recent and long-established findings on brachyuran and anomuran crustaceans that have evolved varying degrees of adaptation for life on land. Chapters by leading researchers take a coordinated evolutionary and comparative approach to systematics and evolution, ecology, behaviour, reproduction, growth and molting, ion and water balance, respiration and circulation, and energetics and locomotion. Each discusses how terrestrial species have become adapted from ancestral freshwater or marine forms. With its extensive bibliography and comprehensive index, including the natural history of nearly eighty species of brachyuran and anomuran crabs, Biology of the Land Crabs will continue to be an invaluable reference for researchers and advanced students.

Book The Painted Bunting s Last Molt

Download or read book The Painted Bunting s Last Molt written by Virgil Suarez and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Painted Bunting’s Last Molt explores fatherhood, parenting, and separation anxiety; and the ways in which time and memory are both a prison and a giver of joy. Fifteen years in the making, Virgil Suárez’s new collection uses his mother’s return to Cuba after 50 years of exile as a catalyst to muse on familial relationships, death, and the passing of time. Moon Decima If it were the Eucharist, it’d be hard to swallow, this moon of lost impressions, a boy in deep water, something tickling his skin. This memory of weight- lessness—a kite that somehow still manages to hover in the dog mouth blackness of sky. This is a cut out moon of lost children, or is it a savior’s moon? This boy will float on home, or be swallowed by the water. Above the pines and mangroves, this moon hangs unrelenting. Is it the one eye of an indifferent God that remains open just so?

Book The Biology of Moult in Birds

Download or read book The Biology of Moult in Birds written by Lukas Jenni and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive review of all aspects of the biology of moult, drawing information from across the literature and in all birds, from penguins to passerines. Feathers are amazing structures unique to birds and, for a variety of reasons, they need to be renewed periodically as a whole in a process called moult. During this process, all of the functions of plumage are impaired and most aspects of a bird's life are affected. Every moult determines a bird's appearance anew, and restores plumage efficacy for flight and insulation. Moult profoundly affects physiology and the organization of the annual cycle, and it constrains reproduction and migration. Given these major impacts, which are equal to the other annual challenges of reproduction and migration, it is surprising that research on moult has largely been so neglected a subject. Lukas Jenni and Raffael Winkler have brought together the widely scattered results of studies on the processes and consequences of moult in birds. This book opens with an overview of the functions of plumage, and of feather maintenance and feather wear, and then introduces the two functions of moult: replacement of worn feathers and adjustment of plumage characteristics and appearance. The body of the book then examines feather-growth and the physiology, energetics and control of moult, and how various other physiological processes interact with moult and may compensate for its costs. Significantly, the authors explain how variations in moult and feather quality affect a bird's overall plumage quality, and they highlight the resulting consequences in terms of physical performance, appearance and signalling. Finally, there is a review of all the various solutions that birds have developed to fit moult into the annual cycle. This long-awaited book covers for the first time all aspects of the biology of moult and fills an important gap in the literature, completing our understanding of how the most important annual events in a bird's life fit together into a coherent whole. It draws on a wide range of information – from penguins to small passerines, from raptors to wildfowl – to highlight the variety of the subject and to pinpoint the many gaps in our knowledge along with avenues for fruitful further research.
