Book Studies in Natural Products Chemistry

Download or read book Studies in Natural Products Chemistry written by Shazia Anjum and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular rearrangements occupy center stage in the development of organic synthesis and, consequently, in the impressive achievements that have resulted in the total synthesis of many complex natural products in the last decades. The purpose of this chapter, in this volume of a book series dedicated to the Studies in Natural Product Chemistry, is to show a set of selected and organized molecular rearrangements based on a personal choice of expertise related to the synthesis of complex bioactive molecules. Our selection addresses [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangements, which continue to provide excellent opportunities for reaching high chemical diversity, operating in efficient synthetic schemes. [3,3]-Sigmatropic rearrangements, such as the Cope and Claisen rearrangements, are among the most basic and useful transformations in synthetic organic chemistry. This is possibly due to the fact that these rearrangements are efficient methods for the synthesis of quaternary, sterically hindered chiral centers, and for the stereoselective formation of carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bonds. In addition, [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangements can be easily integrated in, and adapted to, cascade processes as a simple method to prepare complex molecules in atom-efficient reactions. Consequently, in the context of [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangements, we focus on the transformations of propargylic esters, whose rearrangements, in different experimental conditions, have been largely exploited for the synthesis of interesting key and useful intermediates. The rearrangements can be promoted by protic acids, Lewis acids, and noble metals such as Pt, Au, or Cu salts, or complexes that have recently emerged as the most popular and potent electrophilic activators of alkynes toward a number of nucleophilic agents, under homogeneous conditions.

Book Making And Breaking Symmetry In Chemistry Syntheses Mechanisms And Molecular Rearrangements

Download or read book Making And Breaking Symmetry In Chemistry Syntheses Mechanisms And Molecular Rearrangements written by Michael James Mcglinchey and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-03-09 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elucidation of reaction mechanisms generally requires the carefully designed control of molecular symmetry to distinguish between the many possible reaction pathways. Making and Breaking Symmetry in Chemistry emphasises the crucial role played by symmetry in modern synthetic chemistry. After discussion of a number of famous classical experiments, the advances brought about by the introduction of new techniques, in particular NMR spectroscopy, are exemplified in numerous cases taken from the recent literature. Experimental verification of many of the predictions made in Woodward and Hoffmann's explication of the Conservation of Orbital Symmetry are described. Applications that involve the breaking of molecular symmetry to resolve these and other mechanistic problems in organic, inorganic and organometallic chemistry are presented in the first sections of the book, together with many examples of the detection of hitherto hidden rearrangement processes.Subsequently, under the aegis of making molecular symmetry, examples of the preparation of highly symmetrical molecules found in the organic, organometallic or inorganic domains are discussed. These include Platonic hydrocarbons or boranes, tetrahedranes, cubanes, prismanes, dodecahedrane, fullerene fragments such as corannulene, sumanene or semibuckminsterfullerene, and other systems of unusual geometries or bonding characteristics (Möbius strips, molecular brakes and gears, Chauvin's carbomers, Fitjer's rotanes, persubstituted rings, metal-metal multiple bonds, etc.). The text also contains vignettes of many of the scientists who made these major advances, as well as short sections that briefly summarise key features of important topics that underpin the more descriptive material. These include some aspects of chirality, NMR spectroscopy, and the use of isotopic substitution to break molecular symmetry. A brief appendix on point group symmetry and nomenclature is also helpfully provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic Synthesis is a collection of papers dealing with synthetic tools, the effect of pressure on the electronic states of organic solids, and some novel approaches to alkylations. Some papers explain the cyclopropanation of silyl enol ethers and the two-phase reactions in the chemistry of carbanions and halocarbenes as useful tools in organic synthesis. One paper investigates the "biogenetic-type" synthesis of the bicyclic penicillin-cephalosporin antibiotics from an acyclic tripeptide equivalent. Another paper explains the advantages of the two-phase system to generate trihalomethylanions and dihalocarbenes as it allows the investigator to carry out all the reactions typical for these species easily. The system also readily applies to the reactions of some carbanions with aromatic nitrocompounds. Thallium(III) nitrate (TTN) can be used as an oxidant in organic synthesis; reactions that follow it use include the oxidations and oxidative rearrangements of olefins, acetylenes, ketones and compounds containing carbon-nitrogen double bonds. Another paper presents some examples that use singlet oxygen in synthetic organic chemistry. This collection is useful for researchers, technicians, and scientists whose works involve organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and other related fields of chemistry, such as physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry.

Download or read book Organic Mechanisms written by Reinhard Bruckner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-20 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This English edition of a best-selling and award-winning German textbook Reaction Mechanisms: Organic Reactions · Stereochemistry · Modern Synthetic Methods is aimed at those who desire to learn organic chemistry through an approach that is facile to understand and easily committed to memory. Michael Harmata, Norman Rabjohn Distinguished Professor of Organic Chemistry (University of Missouri) surveyed the accuracy of the translation, made certain contributions, and above all adapted its rationalizations to those prevalent in the organic chemistry community in the English-speaking world. Throughout the book fundamental and advanced reaction mechanisms are presented with meticulous precision. The systematic use of red "electron-pushing arrows" allows students to follow each transformation elementary step by elementary step. Mechanisms are not only presented in the traditional contexts of rate laws and substituent effects but, whenever possible, are illustrated using practical, useful and state-of-the-art reactions. The abundance of stereoselective reactions included in the treatise makes the reader familiar with key concepts of stereochemistry. The fundamental topics of the book address the needs of upper-level undergraduate students, while its advanced sections are intended for graduate-level audiences. Accordingly, this book is an essential learning tool for students and a unique addition to the reference desk of practicing organic chemists, who as life-long learners desire to keep abreast of both fundamental and applied aspects of our science. In addition, it will well serve ambitious students in chemistry-related fields such as biochemistry, medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry. From the reviews: "Professor Bruckner has further refined his already masterful synthetic organic chemistry classic; the additions are seamless and the text retains the magnificent clarity, rigour and precision which were the hallmark of previous editions. The strength of the book stems from Professor Bruckner’s ability to provide lucid explanations based on a deep understanding of physical organic chemistry and to limit discussion to very carefully selected reaction classes illuminated by exquisitely pertinent examples, often from the recent literature. The panoply of organic synthesis is analysed and dissected according to fundamental structural, orbital, kinetic and thermodynamic principles with an effortless coherence that yields great insight and never over-simplifies. The perfect source text for advanced Undergraduate and Masters/PhD students who want to understand, in depth, the art of synthesis ." Alan C. Spivey, Imperial College London "Bruckner’s ‘Organic Mechanisms’ accurately reflects the way practicing organic chemists think and speak about organic reactions. The figures are beautifully drawn and show the way organic chemists graphically depict reactions. It uses a combination of basic valence bond pictures with more sophisticated molecular orbital treatments. It handles mechanisms both from the "electron pushing perspective" and from a kinetic and energetic view. The book will be very useful to new US graduate students and will help bring them to the level of sophistication needed to be serious researchers in organic chemistry." Charles P. Casey, University of Wisconsin-Madison "This is an excellent advanced organic chemistry textbook that provides a key resource for students and teachers alike." Mark Rizzacasa, University of Melbourne, Australia.

Book Organic Chemistry in Action

Download or read book Organic Chemistry in Action written by F. Serratosa and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 1990-06-15 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to all other books in the field of organic synthesis, this volume combines Corey's methodology, which is based on the concept of synthon and retrosynthetic analysis, with Evans' methodology based on the `Lapworth model' of alternating polarities. Using this approach, the formation of carbon-carbon bonds and the manipulation of functional groups are treated together, whereas the stereochemical aspects are considered separately. Emphasis is laid on the importance of rigid structures, whether in the starting materials, the synthetic intermediates or the transition states, as a means of controlling the stereochemistry of the organic compounds. Enclosed with the book is a copy of a miniprogram (CHAOS) for an IBM PC, or fully compatible computers, which is an interactive program, affording the beginner a fast and easy way of learning, exploring and looking for new synthetic schemes of molecules of moderate complexity. As a textbook on organic synthesis, this volume will be of immense value at university level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed for those who have had no more than a brief introduction to organic chemistry and who require a broad understanding of the subject. The book is in two parts. In Part I, reaction mechanism is set in its wider context of the basic principles and concepts that underlie chemical reactions: chemical thermodynamics, structural theory, theories of reaction kinetics, mechanism itself and stereochemistry. In Part II these principles and concepts are applied to the formation of particular types of bonds, groupings, and compounds. The final chapter in Part II describes the planning and detailed execution of the multi-step syntheses of several complex, naturally occurring compounds.
