Download or read book Chronic Kidney Disease written by Monika Göőz and published by IntechOpen. This book was released on 2012-03-16 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic kidney disease is an increasing health and economical problem in our world. Obesity and diabetes mellitus, the two most common cause of CKD, are becoming epidemic in our societies. Education on healthy lifestyle and diet is becoming more and more important for reducing the number of type 2 diabetics and patients with hypertension. Education of our patients is also crucial for successful maintenance therapy. There are, however, certain other factors leading to CKD, for instance the genetic predisposition in the case of polycystic kidney disease or type 1 diabetes, where education alone is not enough.

Book Uremic Toxins

    Book Details:
  • Author : Severin Ringoir
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1468454455
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Uremic Toxins written by Severin Ringoir and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book contains the Proceedings of a two day Symposium on Uremic Toxins organized at the University of Ghent in Belgium. A series of guest lectures, free communications and posters have been presented. An international audience of 163 scientists from 16 nationalities listened to and discussed extensively a spectrum of topics brought forward by colleagues and researchers who worked for many years in the field of Uremic Toxins. There is a striking contrast between all the new dialysis strategies available in the work to "clean" the uremic patients and the almost non-progression of our knowledge on uremic toxins in the past decade. In this sense the symposium was felt by all participants as a new start for the research in the biochemical field of the definition of uremia. If the present volume would stimulate new work in this field in order to define uremia, or identify the uremic toxins, the purpose of the organizers would be maximally fulfilled.

Book Kidney Diseases Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Assessment

Download or read book Kidney Diseases Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Assessment written by Jordan Bryan and published by States Academic Press. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kidneys are two reddish-brown bean-shaped organs found in vertebrates. They are situated on the right and left sides of the retroperitoneal space. The kidneys are essential for the body's basic physiological activities. Kidney dysfunction disrupts these physiological activities and can result in a variety of diseases. A range of immunological, toxic and ischemic insults can harm kidney cells. This results in inflammation and cell death, which in turn leads to organ damage or complete failure. The damage to renal cells and the subsequent cellular regeneration processes are both influenced by inflammation. However, chronic inflammation can lead to renal fibrosis. The kidneys have the ability to regenerate after injury and can recover completely based on the type of renal lesions. The therapeutic intervention options facilitating the regeneration process are limited to fluid management and extracorporeal kidney support. This book unravels the recent studies on kidney diseases. It attempts to understand the molecular mechanisms and clinical assessment of these diseases. This book will help new researchers by foregrounding their knowledge in this area of study.

Book Kidney Inflammation Injury and Regeneration

Download or read book Kidney Inflammation Injury and Regeneration written by Patrick C. Baer and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is still associated with high morbidity and mortality incidence rates, and also bears an elevated risk of subsequent chronic kidney disease. Although the kidney has a remarkable capacity for regeneration after injury and may recover completely depending on the type of renal lesions, the options for clinical intervention are restricted to fluid management and extracorporeal kidney support. The development of novel therapies to prevent AKI, to improve renal regeneration capacity after AKI, and to preserve renal function is urgently needed. The Special Issue covers research articles that investigated the molecular mechanisms of inflammation and injury during different renal pathologies, renal regeneration, diagnostics using new biomarkers, and the effects of different stimuli like medication or bacterial components on isolated renal cells or in vivo models. The Special Issue contains important reviews that consider the current knowledge of cell death and regeneration, inflammation, and the molecular mechanisms of kidney diseases. In addition, the potential of cell-based therapy approaches that use mesenchymal stromal/stem cells or their derivates is summarized. This edition is complemented by reviews that deal with the current data situation on other specific topics like diabetes and diabetic nephropathy or new therapeutic targets.

Book Cystogenesis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jong Hoon Park
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-10-12
  • ISBN : 9811020418
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Cystogenesis written by Jong Hoon Park and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is a highly prevalent hereditary renal disorder in which fluid-filled cysts are appeared in both kidneys. Main causative genes of ADPKD are PKD1 and PKD2, encoding for polycystin-1 (PC1) and polycystin-2 (PC2) respectively. Those proteins are localized on primary cilia and function as mechanosensor in response to the fluid flow, translating mechanistic stimuli into calcium signaling. With mutations either of PKD1 or PKD2, hyper-activated renal tubular epithelial cell proliferation is observed, followed by disrupted calcium homeostasis and aberrant intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) accumulation. Increased cell proliferation with fluid secretion leads to the development of thousands of epithelial-lined, fluid-filled cysts in kidneys. It is also accompanied by interstitial inflammation, fibrosis, and finally reaching end-stage renal disease (ESRD). In human ADPKD, the age at which renal failure typically occurs is later in life, however no specific targeted medications are available to cure ADPKD. Recently, potential therapeutic targets or surrogate diagnostic biomarkers for ADPKD are proposed with the advances in the understanding of ADPKD pathogenesis, and some of them were attempted for clinical trials. Herein, we will summarize genetic and epi-genetic molecular mechanisms in ADPKD progression, and overview the currently available biomarkers or potential therapeutic reagents suggested.
