Book Rural Development in Punjab

Download or read book Rural Development in Punjab written by Autar S. Dhesi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, agricultural development in Punjab symbolised one of the most successful experiments in rural development. However, this success story seems to be going astray. The crux of the problem, this volume suggests, is that externally driven modernization to meet national food needs pushed Punjab into highly specialized production of wheat and rice, resulting in over-utilisation of natural resources with adverse environmental consequences that jeopardizing the long-term viability and sustainability of the agrarian economy. Stagnating productivity, reduced farm size, falling household incomes, depleting groundwater resources, are only a few of the problems that characterise Punjab’s agriculture today. The book establishes clearly that rural development implies more than transformation of traditional agriculture. Apart from ensuring efficient use of limited resources to sustain agricultural production, rural policy should encompass promotion of non-farm activities, investments in social and economic structure and civic amenities.

Book Threats and prospects of arecanut cultivation in Karnataka an economic study

Download or read book Threats and prospects of arecanut cultivation in Karnataka an economic study written by Ranjith Kumar P.S and published by Prem Jose. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term arecanut (Areca catechu L.) means the cluster of nuts. Emergence of the value added arecanut products have given a real boost to arecanut economy in India. Primary data on cost of cultivation of arecanut, perception regarding the constraints and awareness with special focus on emerging alternative arecanut products were collected from the sample farmers, consumers and traders of the sample area. The major source of data for the study was the sample farmers chosen from the selected taluks Viz., Thirthahalli, Kadur, Puttur, Vittla, Tumkur and Hollakere. The data pertain to the consumers and traders were collected from the selected districts namely Shimoga, Mangalore and Bangalore. In order to examine factors influencing the gross returns in arecanut, a regression analysis was carried out. Initially different types of functional forms were examined based on the co-efficient of determination (R2), adjusted R2 and Akaike Information Criterion. Finally the linear form chosen as a better fit based on the explanatory power, which is the co-efficient of determination (R2) and the significance of regression co-efficient. The dependent variable included in the model was gross returns in arecanut. Garret ranking were used to analyze the perception of farmers on production, market and policy based threats. Willingness to consume nutriceutical arecanut products logit analysis was conducted. The secondary data on alternative uses of arecanut were used to analyse the returns from alternative/potential uses of arecanut. Arecanut economy is currently facing crisis from several fronts. Legal Intervention to ban some of the value added products like ghutka is one of the threats which can curtail the demand considerably. Keeping these in background the present study has made an attempt to study the cost of cultivation, major threats, alternative uses of arecanut and awareness among consumers and traders.

Book Assessing the state of the rice milling sector in Nigeria The role of policy for growth and modernization

Download or read book Assessing the state of the rice milling sector in Nigeria The role of policy for growth and modernization written by Johnson, Michael E. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use an industry profit maximization model to conduct an ex-post impact assessment on the extent the rice milling sector in Nigeria has grown and improved its performance in producing high quality premium rice following major public sector interventions made under the Agricultural Transformation Agenda. Given challenges with the availability and qual-ity of data, this assessment looks at the changes between two periods, 2009 and 2013, and simulates the performance of the sector under different technology capacities and policy scenarios. We find that the government has been success-ful in expanding quality paddy production and milling capacity in the country along with an increase in capacity utilization in the medium and large-scale milling sub-sectors. As a result, the production of premium quality rice has increased by approximately 0.5 million metric tons between the two periods. Despite these gains, the industry did not see any overall increase in employment in the medium and large-scale sub-sectors. Further focus by the government on expanding the supply of high quality rice paddy, while maintaining high tariffs to keep the medium and large scale milling sector viable, may provide the best opportunity for Nigeria to reach its goal of self-sufficiency in rice production.

Book Handbook on Rice Cultivation and Processing

Download or read book Handbook on Rice Cultivation and Processing written by NPCS Board of Consultants & Engineers and published by NIIR PROJECT CONSULTANCY SERVICES. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice is the staple food of over half the world population. Rice is normally grown as an annual plant, although in tropical areas it can survive as a perennial crop and can produce a ratoon crop for up to 30 years. The rice plant can grow to 1 to 1.8 m tall, occasionally more depending on the variety and soil fertility. Since its origin, the spread of rice cultivation is extensive and rice is now being grown wherever water supply is adequate and ambient temperature are suitable. The rice grain is covered with a woody husk or hull, which is indigestible and is to be removed in the first step during processing for making the rice edible. Rice cultivation is well suited to countries and regions with low labor costs and high rainfall, as it is labor intensive to cultivate and requires ample water. Rice can be grown practically anywhere, even on a steep hill or mountain. The traditional method for cultivating rice is flooding the fields while, or after, setting the young seedlings. This simple method requires sound planning and servicing of the water damming and channeling, but reduces the growth of less robust weed and pest plants that have no submerged growth state, and deters vermin. While flooding is not mandatory for the cultivation of rice, all other methods of irrigation require higher effort in weed and pest control during growth periods and a different approach for fertilizing the soil. Drying is an essential step in the processing and preservation of paddy; it is the process that reduces grain moisture content to a safe level for storage. Milling is a crucial step in post production of rice. The basic objective of a rice milling system is to remove the husk and the bran layers, and produce an edible, white rice kernel that is sufficiently milled and free of impurities. India is the second largest rice producing country of the world after China. India also grows some of the finest quality aromatic rice of which basmati is the most high quality rice. This book basically deals with history, origin and antiquity of rice, seed rice and seed production, harvest and post harvest operations, water management practices for rice, diseases and pests of rice and their control, application of biotechnology in aromatic rice improvement, traditional methods of parboiling, modernization of parboiling process, solvent extractive rice milling, general types of quick cooking rice processes, dry milled rice products in brewing, breakfast cereals, rice flakes, puffed rice, rice in multi grain cereals etc. The present book contains cultivation and processing of rice in various ways. The book is very resourceful for the entrepreneurs, technocrats, research scholars etc. TAGS How to start a rice farming business, How to Start a Rice Production Business, How to Start Food Processing Industry in India, How to Start Growing Rice, How to Start Rice Farming and Processing Business, How to Start Rice Farming With Modern Rice Farming Techniques, How to Start Rice Processing Industry in India, brewing with flaked rice, challenges of rice production, Cultivation of Rice in India: Conditions, Methods and Production, Food Processing Industry in India, Harvest, Drying, and Storage of Rough Rice, How rice is made, How Rice is Processed, How to Process Rice after being harvested from the Farm, How to Start a Food Production Business, hybrid rice production , Instant rice, Methods of Planting Rice, Milling and processing of rice, Most Profitable Food Processing Business Ideas , Most Profitable Rice Processing Business Ideas, parboiled rice processing technology, Parboiling of Paddy, parboiling of rice, Procedures to Start a Successful Rice Farming Business, Process of Making Parboiled Rice, Processing and Milling of Parboiled Rice, Production of infant foods, Production of Rice Breakfast Cereal food, Quick cooking rice , Rice Beer, rice cultivation and processing book, Rice Cultivation and Processing Business Plan, rice cultivation process, Rice Farming Business - Startup Business, Rice farming: every stage from start to finish, rice seed production manual, Rice Seed Production Technology, Starting a Rice Farm, Starting a Rice Processing Business, storage of rice , technology book on rice production
