Book Modern Views of Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Views of Electricity Classic Reprint written by Sir Oliver Lodge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Views of Electricity The most interesting and important portion of physics at the present day is that constantly growing portion which is concerned with the properties and function of the universal connecting medium, the ether. All the phenomena of light, of electricity, and of magnetism, as well as of what is spoken of as radiant heat, are intimately connected with, and indeed Wholly dependent on, that medium; it is through these agencies that We have gradually become aware of its existence and able in some degree to Investigate it. Probably gravitation, cohesion, and chemical affinity are no less Closely associated with the ether; and it is becoming doubtful Whether matter itself could exist without it. Book The Nature of Matter and Electricity

Download or read book The Nature of Matter and Electricity written by Daniel F. Comstock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature of Matter and Electricity: An Outline of Modern Views Something must be said in explanation of the arrange ment of the book. It consists of two parts, the first giving a rapid survey of the entire subject, outlining the fundamental conceptions and emphasizing their most significant applications only, While the second retraces the same general field in a slower and less connected way, in order to consider details omitted in the more cursory treatment. The second part is divided into fifty six sections, each of which is numbered and referred to by its number in the appropriate connection in Part I. The book may be read in various ways according to the purposes or pleasure of the reader. If he is interested only to acquaint himself with the fundamentals of the modern theory through a quick, general sketch he may read Part I continuously and omit Part II altogether. If, on the other hand, he is already familiar with these essentials he may prefer to reverse the procedure and omit Part I. Part II although definitely divided by topics nevertheless forms a fairly continuous discussion. In general, however, the best method of using the book will probably be to read both of the sections in parallel, refer ring to each Section in Part II as its number appears in the text of the first part. It is believed that this method of study will encourage the type of attitude whichlis tequired to give the subject the greatest clearness in the reader's mind. It is obvious that the structure of Part II permits its ready use for purposes of Special reference, such as may arise, for example, in connection with school courses in elementary physics and chemistry. The basis of Part I is to be found in a series of articles contributed in 1911 by D. F. Comstock to the Science Conspectus, the journal of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Society of Arts. Somewhat to his surprise, there was a Wide demand from various sources for fur ther copies of these articles, and hence it seemed worth while to publish them in book form, together with a more complete discussion of the same subject. The articles have been amplified and brought up to date by their original author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Electricity in Modern Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electricity in Modern Life Classic Reprint written by George William De Tunzelmann B. Sc and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity in Modern Life IN this little volume I have endeavored to give a brief but intelligible and connected sketch of the more important of the numerous useful functions fulfilled by Electricity in modern daily life, the scientific principles underlying these practical applications, and the history of their development. It is addressed primarily to readers who have no previous knowledge of the subject, but who wish to know something of what Electricity has been made to do for us, and of how it has been made to do it. I trust, however, that it may also be of some use to students who are just beginning the study of practical Electricity, by giving them a general view of the field of knowledge which they will afterward have to study in detail. Book Elementary Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Electricity Classic Reprint written by Sydney George Starling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Electricity AN attempt has been made in this book to represent the subject of electricity in a logical manner, and to keep in View its present-day aspect as well as its history. Magnetism is no longer treated as a separate subject, as modern theory holds that magnetism is an attribute of electricity in motion, that is, of the electric current. As an introduction to the subject one of the most familiar applications of electricity is Chosen - the electric incandescent lamp, and from this the rest is developed. Those branches of magnetism which stand apart from the main thread of the treatment of electricity, namely, terrestrial magnetism and the magnetic properties of materials, are relegated to the two last chapters. One of the most difficult conceptions for the student, that of potential, is introduced in the treatment of electricity at rest, that is, electrostatics, as it is here a simple quantity. Its relation to the rate of working in the case of a current then follows easily. While fitted for classes of students studying electricity with an examination in view, the book is also intended to give them a wide outlook upon the subject in its present state of development. For this reason chapters on electric waves and wireless telegraphy and telephony, electrons and X-rays and radioactivity are added; in fact there is a tendency in modern examinations to introduce these subjects to a small extent in order to make electricity a living rather than a historical subject. Only well-established facts have been included, but these prepare the way for the intensely interesting subject of the modern theories of the constitution of matter which the student may follow later. Download or read book Electrons Or the Nature and Properties of Negative Electricity Classic Reprint written by Sir Oliver Lodge and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrons, or the Nature and Properties of Negative Electricity In 1902 I was asked by the President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers to give to that body a discourse on recent progress towards knowledge of the nature of Electricity, especially concerning its discontinuous or atomic structure. This discourse, greatly extended, appeared in Vol. 32 of the Journal of the Institution, and constitutes the nucleus of the present book. Many additions have now been made, and some of the difficulties recently promulgated concerning the possibility of an electric theory of matter are touched upon. They are of date too recent to have been mentioned even in my "Romanes Lecture" before the University of Oxford, published under the title Modern Views of Matter by the Clarendon Press. The most important addition is a more detailed account of the proof of the purely electrical nature of the mass or inertia of an electron: an investigation generally associated on the experimental side with the name of Kaufmann, but of course based on the work of many predecessors and contemporaries.
