Book The Art of Picturing in Early Modern English Literature

Download or read book The Art of Picturing in Early Modern English Literature written by Camilla Caporicci and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an international group of highly regarded scholars and rooted in the field of intermedial approaches to literary studies, this volume explores the complex aesthetic process of "picturing" in early modern English literature. The essays in this volume offer a comprehensive and varied picture of the relationship between visual and verbal in the early modern period, while also contributing to the understanding of the literary context in which Shakespeare wrote. Using different methodological approaches and taking into account a great variety of texts, including Elizabethan sonnet sequences, metaphysical poetry, famous as well as anonymous plays, and court masques, the book opens new perspectives on the literary modes of "picturing" and on the relationship between this creative act and the tense artistic, religious and political background of early modern Europe. The first section explores different modes of looking at works of art and their relation with technological innovations and religious controversies, while the chapters in the second part highlight the multifaceted connections between European visual arts and English literary production. The third section explores the functions performed by portraits on the page and the stage, delving into the complex question of the relationship between visual and verbal representation. Finally, the chapters in the fourth section re-appraise early modern reflections on the relationship between word and image and on their respective power in light of early-seventeenth-century visual culture, with particular reference to the masque genre.

Book Printed Images in Early Modern Britain

Download or read book Printed Images in Early Modern Britain written by Michael Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Printed images were ubiquitous in early modern Britain, and they often convey powerful messages which are all the more important for having circulated widely at the time. Yet, by comparison with printed texts, these images have been neglected, particularly by historians to whom they ought to be of the greatest interest. This volume helps remedy this state of affairs. Complementing the online digital library of British Printed Images to 1700 (www.bpi1700.org.uk), it offers a series of essays which exemplify the many ways in which such visual material can throw light on the history of the period. Ranging from religion to politics, polemic to satire, natural science to consumer culture, the collection explores how printed images need to be read in terms of the visual syntax understood by contemporaries, their full meaning often only becoming clear when they are located in the context in which they were produced and deployed. The result is not only to illustrate the sheer richness of material of this kind, but also to underline the importance of the messages which it conveys, which often come across more strongly in visual form than through textual commentaries. With contributions from many leading exponents of the cultural history of early modern Britain, including experts on religion, politics, science and art, the book's appeal will be equally wide, demonstrating how every facet of British culture in the period can be illuminated through the study of printed images.

Book A painter witness to his time Minaux 1923 1986

Download or read book A painter witness to his time Minaux 1923 1986 written by Hélène Minaux and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary artistic and creative impulse followed WWII dark years. As early as 1946, André Minaux, artist and painter, shared it. His friends were Mourlot (master lithographer), Buffet, Lorjou and Rebeyrolle (painters) and Jean Lacouture (author and historian). His exceptional talent was unveiled by happenstance, fateful events and encouraged by great elders such as Picasso, Cocteau, Vlaminck, F.Desnoyer, Fernand Léger, Raoul Dufy, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Clavé and Lorjou. Minaux kept his distance from fashions and schools of thoughts. Art lovers were seduced by his original and powerful art. Minaux exhibited in galleries, museums and in important private collections worldwide. Also a lithographer, engraver and illustrator, he illustrated Hemingway, Cendrars, Ionesco, Agatha Christie, Giono and Marguerite Duras. He drew the famous last portrait of Gide. He found himself involved in a quarrel of figurative artists against abstracts ones, which was going full swing at the time. A painter’s route through those booming years’ artistic events. Narratives illustrated by artwork reproductions, press clippings, movie extracts, interviews and photos. A surprising life in pursuit of art he always questioned.

Book Making Worlds

  • Author : Angela Vanhaelen
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press

  • ISBN : 1487544952
  • Pages : 648 pages

Download or read book Making Worlds written by Angela Vanhaelen and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking into account the destructive powers of globalization, Making Worlds considers the interconnectedness of the world in the early modern period. This collection examines the interdisciplinary phenomenon of making worlds, with essays from scholars of history, literary studies, theatre and performance, art history, and anthropology. The volume advances questions about the history of globalization by focusing on how the expansion of global transit offered possibilities for interactions that included the testing of local identities through inventive experimentation with new and various forms of culture. Case studies show how the imposition of European economic, religious, political, and military models on other parts of the world unleashed unprecedented forces of invention as institutionalized powers came up against the creativity of peoples, cultural practices, materials, and techniques of making. In doing so, Making Worlds offers an important rethinking of how early globalization inconsistently generated ongoing dynamics of making, unmaking, and remaking worlds.
