Book excerpt: Though we routinely take to the air, for many of us flying remains a mystery. Few of us understand the how and why of jetting from New York to London in six hours. Patrick Smith, an airline pilot and author of Salon.com's popular column, "Ask the Pilot," unravels the secrets and tells you all there is to know about the strange and fascinating world of commercial flight. He offers: A nuts and bolts explanation of how planes fly Insights into safety and security Straight talk about turbulence, air traffic control, windshear, and crashes The history, color, and controversy of the world's airlines The awe and oddity of being a pilot The poetry and drama of airplanes, airports, and traveling abroad In a series of frank, often funny explanations and essays, Smith speaks eloquently to our fears and curiosities, incorporating anecdotes, memoir, and a life's passion for flight. Download or read book Flying Higher written by Morten Beyer and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of transport airlines stems from the final days of World War II, when airplanes were used mostly by the military and for Government mail. Juan Trippe’s idea of an “Empire of the Air” transporting people was a distant dream. There were no footsteps to follow. Beyer, working himself up through the ranks, cast his practical eye at the many aspects of how an airline could run and prosper, and became known as an efficiency wizard. During his international career, he says what it was like dealing with government regulations, he describes the fleets and their maintenance, and at one point a revolution. All this is interspersed with some hilarious anecdotes. It was a risky business, and this is the true adventure of Mort Beyer’s life as the president of several scheduled and non scheduled airlines over a span of sixty years.

Download or read book Flights of Imagination written by Sonja Dümpelmann and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In much the same way that views of the earth from the Apollo missions in the late 1960s and early 1970s led indirectly to the inauguration of Earth Day and the modern environmental movement, the dawn of aviation ushered in a radically new way for architects, landscape designers, urban planners, geographers, and archaeologists to look at cities and landscapes. As icons of modernity, airports facilitated the development of a global economy during the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, reshaping the way people thought about the world around them. Professionals of the built environment awoke to the possibilities offered by the airports themselves as sites of design and by the electrifying new aerial perspective on landscape. In Flights of Imagination, Sonja Dümpelmann follows the evolution of airports from their conceptualization as landscapes and cities to modern-day plans to turn decommissioned airports into public urban parks. The author discusses landscape design and planning activities that were motivated, legitimized, and facilitated by the aerial view. She also shows how viewing the earth from above redirected attention to bodily experience on the ground and illustrates how design professionals understood the aerial view as simultaneously abstract and experiential, detailed and contextual, harmful and essential. Along the way, Dümpelmann traces this multiple dialectic from the 1920s to the land-camouflage activities during World War II, and from the environmental and landscape planning initiatives of the 1960s through today.
Download or read book Flying Adventurers written by David K. Vaughan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-05-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aviation books were a unique and prolific subgenre of American juvenile literature from the early to mid-20th century, drawing upon the nation's intensifying interest. The first books of this type, Harry L. Sayler's series Airship Boys, appeared shortly after the Wright brothers' first successful flight in 1909. Following Charles Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic, popular series like Ted Scott and Andy Lane established the "golden age" of juvenile aviation literature. This work examines the 375 juvenile aviation series titles published between 1909 and 1964. It weaves together several thematic threads, including the placement of aviation narratives within the context of major historical events, the technical accuracy in depictions of flying machines and the ways in which characters reflected the culture of their eras. Three appendices provide publication data for each series, a list of referenced aircraft and an annotated bibliography; there is a full index.
