The first of its three parts considers formal and contextual issues, including myth, politics, gender, and race, while the second and third parts discuss a wide range of individual poets, including Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, W.B. Yeats, Mina Loy, Gertrude Stein, Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, and Marianne Moore, as well as key movements such as Imagism, Objectivism, and the Harlem Renaissance. This book also addresses the impact of both World Wars on experimental poetries and the crucial role of magazines in disseminating and proselytizing on behalf of poetic modernism. The collection concludes with a wide-ranging discussion of the inheritance of modernism in recent writing on both sides of the Atlantic.

Book The Road from Paris

Download or read book The Road from Paris written by Cyrena N. Pondrom and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1974-03-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'For the best part of a thousand years English poets have gone to school to the French,' declared Ezra Pound in 1913. Whatever the truth of this assertion for all of English literature its accuracy for Pound's own period is well established. Both he and T. S. Eliot wrote frankly of the debt which they owed to their French predecessors and this fact has long been recognised by students of English literature. With the recognition of this influence went the assumption that Eliot and Pound were themselves responsible for its transmission from France to England. That this was not so is demonstrated by the documents reprinted in this volume. Dr Pondrom presents a selection of extracts and complete essays and letters by the critics and poets who together were principally responsible for channelling into English writing the ideas and theories of the French poetic avant-garde.

Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 4 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Book British Literature in Transition 1900 1920 A New Age

Download or read book British Literature in Transition 1900 1920 A New Age written by James Purdon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first two decades of the twentieth century, Britain's imperial power and influence was at its height. These were years of daring, when adventurers sounded the mysteries of the deep sea and the distant poles, aviators sped through the skies, and new media technologies transformed communication. They were years of social upheaval, during which long-suppressed voices – particularly those of women, of the labouring classes, and of colonial subjects – grew louder and demanded to be heard. They were years of violence, of insurrection and political agitation, and of imperial conflicts that would encompass continents. By subjecting specific developments in literature and related culture to a fine-grained and historically-informed analysis, British Literature in Transition, 1900–1920: A New Age? explores the writing of this extraordinary period in all its complexity and vibrancy.

Book A Reference Guide for English Studies

Download or read book A Reference Guide for English Studies written by Michael J. Marcuse and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious undertaking is designed to acquaint students, teachers, and researchers with reference sources in any branch of English studies, which Marcuse defines as "all those subjects and lines of critical and scholarly inquiry presently pursued by members of university departments of English language and literature.'' Within each of 24 major sections, Marcuse lists and annotates bibliographies, guides, reviews of research, encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, and reference histories. The annotations and various indexes are models of clarity and usefulness, and cross references are liberally supplied where appropriate. Although cost-conscious librarians will probably consider the several other excellent literary bibliographies in print, such as James L. Harner's Literary Research Guide (Modern Language Assn. of America, 1989), larger academic libraries will want Marcuse's volume.-- Jack Bales, Mary Washington Coll. Book The Structure of Modernist Poetry Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Structure of Modernist Poetry Routledge Revivals written by Theo Hermans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, this book provides a descriptive and comparative study of some of the fundamental structural aspects of modernist poetic writing in English, French and German in the first decades of the twentieth century. The work concerns itself primarily with basic structural elements and techniques and the assumptions that underlie and determine the modernist mode of poetic writing. Particular attention is paid to the theories developed by authors and to the essential ‘principles of construction’ that shape the structure of their poetry. Considering the work of a number of modernist poets, Theo Hermans argues that the various widely divergent forms and manifestations of modernistic poetry writing can only be properly understood as part of one general trend.
