Book The Difficulties of Modernism

Download or read book The Difficulties of Modernism written by Leonard Diepeveen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Difficulties of Modernism, Leonard Diepeveen examines how difficulty became central to our encounters with modern literature and culture. Literary modernism's first readers often complained that difficulty was running rampant in literature, that art had become a plague of unintelligibility. Diepeveen argues that the simultaneous appearance of modernism and discussion about difficulty was not coincidental-difficulty allowed modernism to rise to the status of high art, and it was fundamental to how modernism shaped the canon not only of twentieth-century literature, but of the literature that preceded it. He argues that modernism can be best understood as the moment when knowing how to maneuver through difficult art became the central sign of one's ability to participate in high culture.

Book Anthologies of British Poetry

Download or read book Anthologies of British Poetry written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Tottel's Miscellany (1557) to the last twentieth-century Oxford Book of English Verse (1999), anthologies have been a prime institution for the preservation and mediation of poetry. The importance of anthologies for creating and re-creating the canon of English poetry, for introducing ‘new' programmes of poetry, as a record of changing poetic fashions, audience tastes and reading practices, or as a profitable literary commodity has often been asserted. Despite its impact, however, the poetry anthology in itself has attracted surprisingly little critical interest in Britain or elsewhere in the English-speaking world. This volume is the first publication to explore the largely unmapped field of poetry anthologies in Britain. Essays written from a wide range of perspectives in literary and cultural studies, and the point of view of poets, editors, publishers and cultural institutions, aim to do justice to the typological, functional and historical variety with which this form of publication has manifested itself - from early modern print culture to the postmodern age of the world wide web.

Book Stephen Spender

Download or read book Stephen Spender written by David Leeming and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first critical biography of one of the twentieth century's towering literary figures. Stephen Spender was a minor poet, but a major cultural influence during much of the century. Literary critic, journalist, art critic, social commentator, and friendend of the best-known cultural figures of the modernist and postmodernist periods (Yeats, Woolf, Sartre, Auden, Eliot, Isherwood, Hughes, Brodsky, Ginsberg-a "who's who" of contemporary literature). Spender's writing recorded and distilled the emotional turbulence of many of the century's defining moments: the Spanish Civil War; the rise and fall of Marxism and Nazism; World War II; the human rights struggle after the war; the Vietnam protest, the Cold War, and the 1960s sexual revolution; the rise of America as a cultural and political force. As David Leeming's fascinating biography demonstrates, Stephen Spender's life reflected the complexity and flux of the century in which he lived: his sexual ambivalence, his famous friends, the free-love days in Germany between the wars, the CIA-Encounter scandal. In David Leeming's capable hands, this comprehensive, unauthorized study of Spender is a meditation on modernity itself.

Book Twenty First Century Marianne Moore

Download or read book Twenty First Century Marianne Moore written by Elizabeth Gregory and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection represents a new range of critical awareness and marks the burgeoning of what is a twenty-first-century Marianne Moore renaissance. The essays explore Moore’s participation in modernist movements and communities, her impact on subsequent generations of artists, and the dynamics of her largely disregarded post-World War II career. At the same time, they track the intersection of the evolution of her poetics with cultural politics across her career. Drawing on fresh perspectives from previously unknown biographical material and new editions and archives of Moore’s work, the essays offer particularly interesting insights on Moore’s relationships and her late career role as a culture icon.
