Los capítulos 2 y 3 se dedican a dar unas nociones de combinatoria y probabilidad en espacios discretos y a una pequeña introducción de la teoría de grafos. Ambos capítulos, que tienen interés por sí mismos, presenta conceptos necesarios para introducir y estudiar las cadenas de Markov, capítulos 4, 5 y 6, y el modelo de la Leslie, capítulo 7, los dos de gran utilidad para el estudio de la evolución temporal de poblaciones en las ciencias de la naturaleza, en particular en genética, zoología y ecología.
