En esta publicación se ha tratado de desarrollar algunos aspectos fundamentales del modelo de atención a la salud mental del siglo XXI, modelos y enfoques que ya forman parte de las estrategias y las prácticas de muchos de los centros de la Orden de San Juan de Dios. Desde esa visión, se pretende plantear los conflictos éticos que aparecen de manera más frecuente en la práctica asistencial, centrándose en los colectivos más vulnerables, los enfermos graves con trastornos persistentes y los niños y adolescentes con problemas mentales. El enfoque biopsicosocial que se aborda ofrece la base para el trabajo interdisciplinar en la asistencia psiquiátrica, una característica que, con mayor o menor acierto en la práctica, constituye uno de los ejes fundamentales de los modelos asistenciales en el mundo, y desde luego, el de la psiquiatría basada en la comunidad. En esta publicación se ha querido añadir otro componente esencial para los centros de la Orden Hospitalaria: la espiritualidad de la persona con enfermedad mental.
