Book Modeling of the Damage Mechanisms in AlMgSi Alloys

Download or read book Modeling of the Damage Mechanisms in AlMgSi Alloys written by Denis Lassance and published by Presses univ. de Louvain. This book was released on 2006 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growth in importance of the aluminium industry, has come increased demand to invest into the quality improvement of the different aluminium based hot extruded products. One of the main mechanisms, which can influence deformation at high temperature within the 6xxx aluminium, is linked to the presence of the AlFeSi intermetallic phases. These phases severely restrict hot workability when present as hard and brittle plate-like precipitates b-AlFeSi. Damage initiation occurs in these alloys by decohesion or fracture of these intermetallic inclusions. The understanding and modeling of the deformation and fracture behavior of aluminium alloys at room and at hot working temperature is very important for optimizing manufacturing processes such as extrusion. The ductility of 6xxx aluminium alloys can be directly related to chemical composition and to the microstructural evolution occurring during the heat treatment procedures preceding extrusion if proper physics based deformation and fracture models are used. In this thesis, room temperature and hot tensile tests are adopted to address the problem xperimentally. The damage evolution mechanisms is defined at various temperatures and a micromechanics based model of the Gurson type considering several populations of cavities nucleated by different second phase particles groups is developed on the basis of the experimental observations. This model allows relating quantitatively microstructure and ductility at various temperatures strain rates and stress triaxialities. Finite element simulations based on an enhanced micromechanics-based model are used to validate the model. Finally, the effect of some key factors that determine the extrudability of aluminium is also discussed and a correlation between the ductility calculations in uniaxial tension and the maximum extrusion speed is developed for one defined profile.

Book Low Cycle Fatigue and Elasto Plastic Behaviour of Materials

Download or read book Low Cycle Fatigue and Elasto Plastic Behaviour of Materials written by K.T. Rie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 781 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1979 the first InternationalSymposium on Low CycleFatigue and Elasto-Plastic Behaviour of Materials was held in Stuttgart, FRG. Since then research in low cycle fatigue has proceeded rapidly. The vital interest of engineers and researchers in communicating the rapid advances in the ongoing research in low cycle fatigue has encouraged me to initiate again the Second International Conference which was held in Munich, FRG, 7-11 September 1987. Failure in low cycle fatigue represents a serious problem in the design and opera tion of highly stressed structures. Under complex loading and environmental cir cumstances, especially for high temperature services, reliable life prediction can not be expected without detailed consideration of the failure mechanism and with out extensive use of mechanistic approaches. The purpose of this conference was to provide a forum to discuss the advances in recent research in the field of low cycle fatigue. The conference was intended to help to further bridge the gap between those who are involved in basic research, and the engineers who have to perform the design of highly stressed structural components.

Book Influence of the Microstructure on Mechanical Properties and Damage Mechanisms in Al Si Cu Alloys by Using 2D and 3D In situ Analysis

Download or read book Influence of the Microstructure on Mechanical Properties and Damage Mechanisms in Al Si Cu Alloys by Using 2D and 3D In situ Analysis written by Zaidao Li and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2D and 3D characterization and image analysis have been performed to measure the microstructural changes associated with: different Sr, Fe and Mn levels, the casting process (Gravity Die Casting vs. Lost Foam Casting, LFC) and the solution heat treatments in A319 alloy. The evolution of microstructure in Al-Si-Cu alloy with different alloying elements addition was also studied by thermal analysis. The microstructure consists of hard inclusions, i.e. eutectic Si, iron-intermetallics and Al2Cu phases, and pores. The effect on mechanical properties of the alloys has been monitored by Vickers hardness measurement and tensile tests. Surface damage observations are performed on A319 alloys with different Fe content during in-situ tensile test, which allows following the development and localization of the deformation and cracks. Digital image correlation measurement and fractography highlighted the role of iron-intermetallics in the cracks initiation and propagation. Tensile tests on LFC A319 samples with two different heat treatment conditions were performed in-situ under Laboratory Computed Tomography. Strain measurements from digital volume correlation and observed damage mechanisms show that cracks initiate at hard inclusions in the areas with sufficient stress concentrations, which are mainly provided by large pores, and often propagate through the fracture of Al2Cu, iron-intermetallics, as well as through Si particles rather than by their decohesion from the matrix.

Book Modeling of Thermomechanical Fatigue Damage in Coated Alloys

Download or read book Modeling of Thermomechanical Fatigue Damage in Coated Alloys written by Y. Kadioglu and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A life prediction model that determines the contribution of fatigue, creep and environmental damage to failure was developed for an aluminide coated nickel-based superalloy, Mar-M247. In the first phase of the study, isothermal (IF) and thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) experiments were conducted to investigate the experimental damage mechanisms. In the second phase, an analytical technique was advanced to compute the stress fields due to a surface inclusion in a half-space where the inclusion simulates the oxide spike. The technique is based on Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and elucidates the mismatch in elastic moduli and thermal expansion coefficients of the matrix and the oxide spike on local strain fields. The fatigue life results of several experiments, along with the local stress-strain field in the vicinity of an oxide spike, were employed to define the model constants. Life prediction bounds are established corresponding to short-time coating protection, where the coating provides inconsiderable protection to substrate, and long-time coating protection, where the coating provides appreciable protection to the substrate. For in-phase loading, since the failure is governed by creep damage, the nature of coating protection did not influence the fatigue lives. The out-of-phase predictions corresponding to short-time coating protection and the experimental data coincided as the maximum temperature increased in the experiments, confirming that the coating provides unsubstantial protection at higher temperatures.

Book Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures

Download or read book Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures written by Krishnan K. Sankaran and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures covers the fundamentals of processing-microstructure-property relationships and how multiple properties are balanced and optimized in materials with hierarchical microstructures widely used in critical applications. The discussion is based principally on metallic materials used in aircraft structures; however, because they have sufficiently diverse microstructures, the underlying principles can easily be extended to other materials systems. With the increasing microstructural complexity of structural materials, it is important for students, academic researchers and practicing engineers to possess the knowledge of how materials are optimized and how they will behave in service. The book integrates aspects of computational materials science, physical metallurgy, alloy design, process design, and structure-properties relationships, in a manner not done before. It fills a knowledge gap in the interrelationships of multiple microstructural and deformation mechanisms by applying the concepts and tools of designing microstructures for achieving combinations of engineering properties—such as strength, corrosion resistance, durability and damage tolerance in multi-component materials—used for critical structural applications. Discusses the science behind the properties and performance of advanced metallic materials Provides for the efficient design of materials and processes to satisfy targeted performance in materials and structures Enables the selection and development of new alloys for specific applications based upon evaluation of their microstructure as illustrated in this work
