Book On the Formation of Vortex Breakdown Bubbles when Imparting Swirl to Conical Diffusers

Download or read book On the Formation of Vortex Breakdown Bubbles when Imparting Swirl to Conical Diffusers written by P. Frawley and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To improve the efficiency of wide angled conical diffusers, it is sometimes necessary to impart swirl to the flow. When this swirl is of sufficient severity, a bubble occurs at the axis. This in turn causes blockage and the pressure recovery coefficient drops. This is undesirable. This paper aims at obtaining an understanding of the mechanism of vortex breakdown using Laser Doppler Anemometry, and flow simulation using computational techniques. The diffuser examined has a double conical angle of 40 deg and an area ratio of 4:1. The entry Reynold's number is maintained at 28.4 x 10 3. The parameters being examined are wall pressure distribution axial and tangential velocity profiles and finally kinetic energy of turbulence. The investigation throws light on the mechanics of vortex breakdown and reavels the probability of stalled flow creating the bubble formed at the axis using excess swirl. (Author).

Book Direct and Large Eddy Simulation VII

Download or read book Direct and Large Eddy Simulation VII written by Vincenzo Armenio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-28 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Surrey in 1994, Grenoble in 1996, Cambridge in 1999, Enschede in 2001, Munich in 2003 and Poiters in 2005, the 7th Workshop, DLES7, will be held in Trieste, again under the auspices of ERCOFTAC. Following the spirit of the series, the goal of this latest workshop is to establish a state-of-the-art of DNS and LES techniques for the computation and modeling of transitional/turbulent flows covering a broad scope of topics such as aerodynamics, acoustics, combustion, multiphase flows, environment, geophysics and bio-medical applications. This gathering of specialists in the field should once again be a unique opportunity for discussions about the more recent advances in the prediction, understanding and control of turbulent flows in academic or industrial situations.

Book Modelling of Convective Heat and Mass Transfer in Rotating Flows

Download or read book Modelling of Convective Heat and Mass Transfer in Rotating Flows written by Igor V. Shevchuk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents results of the analytical and numerical modeling of convective heat and mass transfer in different rotating flows caused by (i) system rotation, (ii) swirl flows due to swirl generators, and (iii) surface curvature in turns and bends. Volume forces (i.e. centrifugal and Coriolis forces), which influence the flow pattern, emerge in all of these rotating flows. The main part of this work deals with rotating flows caused by system rotation, which includes several rotating-disk configurations and straight pipes rotating about a parallel axis. Swirl flows are studied in some of the configurations mentioned above. Curvilinear flows are investigated in different geometries of two-pass ribbed and smooth channels with 180° bends. The author demonstrates that the complex phenomena of fluid flow and convective heat transfer in rotating flows can be successfully simulated using not only the universal CFD methodology, but in certain cases by means of the integral methods, self-similar and analytical solutions. The book will be a valuable read for research experts and practitioners in the field of heat and mass transfer.

Book Flow Induced Pulsation and Vibration in Hydroelectric Machinery

Download or read book Flow Induced Pulsation and Vibration in Hydroelectric Machinery written by Peter Dörfler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970’s, an increasing amount of specialized research has focused on the problems created by instability of internal flow in hydroelectric power plants. However, progress in this field is hampered by the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, between fluid mechanics, structural mechanics and hydraulic transients. Flow-induced Pulsation and Vibration in Hydroelectric Machinery provides a compact guidebook explaining the many different underlying physical mechanisms and their possible effects. Typical phenomena are described to assist in the proper diagnosis of problems and various key strategies for solution are compared and considered with support from practical experience and real-life examples. The link between state-of the-art CFD computation and notorious practical problems is discussed and quantitative data is provided on normal levels of vibration and pulsation so realistic limits can be set for future projects. Current projects are also addressed as the possibilities and limitations of reduced-scale model tests for prediction of prototype performance are explained. Engineers and project planners struggling with the practical problems will find Flow-induced Pulsation and Vibration in Hydroelectric Machinery to be a comprehensive and convenient reference covering key topics and ideas across a range of relevant disciplines.
