Book Modeling of Solid Liquid Equilibrium

Download or read book Modeling of Solid Liquid Equilibrium written by Sunil Maity and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The knowledge of solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE) and availability of a validated computer based model is of great technical interest for developing and designing separation processes, such as crystallization and fractionation and solving industrial problems. The latest version of Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (SAFT), Perturbed Chain-SAFT (PC-SAFT), is very much successful for highly non-ideal macro-molecular weight system such as polymers. With the experimental SLE data available in literature for low molecular weight n-alkanes and aromatic compounds both at atmospheric and elevated pressure, the suitability of the developed SLE model based on PC-SAFT was tested. Subsequently sensitivity study was performed for polyethylene. The solubility of two different grade of polyethylene in mixed xylene was then determined using indigenously developed laser based technique. The viscosity average molecular weight, specific gravity, and melting point of the polyethylene samples were determined using standard technique. The validated model was then used to correlate the experimentally determined solubility of polyethylene in xylene.

Book excerpt: Solubility of polyethylene in mixed xylene was determined experimentally at atmospheric pressure by an indigenously developed laser based technique. In this work, PC-SAFT equation of state was used to model solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE). With the experimental SLE data available in literature for low molecular weight n-alkanes and aromatic compounds both at atmospheric and elevated pressure, the suitability of the developed SLE model based on PC-SAFT equation of state was tested. Subsequently a sensitivity study was performed to understand the effects of different parameters that affect the solubility of polyethylene. The validated model was then used to correlate the experimentally determined solubility data for polyethylene system.

Book Methods for Phase Diagram Determination

Download or read book Methods for Phase Diagram Determination written by Ji-Cheng Zhao and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-05-05 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase diagrams are "maps" materials scientists often use to design new materials. They define what compounds and solutions are formed and their respective compositions and amounts when several elements are mixed together under a certain temperature and pressure. This monograph is the most comprehensive reference book on experimental methods for phase diagram determination. It covers a wide range of methods that have been used to determine phase diagrams of metals, ceramics, slags, and hydrides. * Extensive discussion on methodologies of experimental measurements and data assessments * Written by experts around the world, covering both traditional and combinatorial methodologies* A must-read for experimental measurements of phase diagrams

Book Solid Liquid Equilibrium in Multi Solute Systems

Download or read book Solid Liquid Equilibrium in Multi Solute Systems written by Izumi Kurosawa and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid-liquid equilibrium in isomorphous amino acid systems has been investigated as a model for systems that form solid solutions. Solid- and liquid-phase compositions in L-valine + L-leucine, L-valine + L-isoleucine, and L-isoleucine + L-valine in water were measured over the entire range of solid composition, and it was shown (from mass balance and phase rule considerations) that these systems form solid solutions. The solid- phases resulting from isothermal and cooling crystallization experiments were also investigated using powder x-ray diffractometry which showed that homogeneous solid solutions could only be obtained in cooling crystallization experiments, whereas isothermal experiments generally produced inhomogeneous solids. This suggests that data reported in the literature from isothermal experiments may not represent true equilibrium values. Solid-phase activity coefficients were estimated using binary and ternary equilibrium data and the UNIFAC-Kuramochi model for liquid-phase nonidealities. The solid phases in the three systems investigated exhibited significant nonidealities that were correlated using the Margules model. The model parameters exhibited a linear relationship with the ratio of binary solubilities of the two solutes. Such simple relationship may be advantageous when solid-liquid equilibrium of thermally unstable solutes or components with unknown physical properties are crystallized.

Book Liquid liquid Equilibria

Download or read book Liquid liquid Equilibria written by Josef P. Novák and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1987 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While a satisfactory description of liquid-vapour equilibria in binary and multi-component systems had been developed by the end of the fifties, a similar situation has only been attained for liquid-liquid equilibria in the last ten years. There are several reasons for this, the most important of which is the necessity to employ more complex thermodynamic models for a quantitative description of liquid-liquid equilibria. These models require very sophisticated calculation techniques that cannot be carried out without the assistance of a computer. The authors have attempted to provide a theoretical description of liquid-liquid equilibria at a level permitting routine chemical engineering applications similar to those common for liquid-vapour equilibria. Consequently, a great deal of attention is paid to the calculation of parameters for heterogeneous and homogeneous binary systems, and to the qualitative evaluation of the suitability of the most frequently used thermodynamic models.
