Download or read book Theory of Dielectric Optical Waveguides 2e written by Paul Liao and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Dialectric Optical Waveguides, Second Edition focuses on the practical usage of optical waveguides. This book explores the rapid growth of integrated optics, which is devoted to the development of microscopic optical circuits based on thin film technology. Organized into nine chapters, this edition starts with an overview of the properties of dielectric slab waveguides. This book then examines the theory of directional couplers with and without diffraction gratings. Other chapters describe the numerical methods for solving guided mode as well as wave propagation problems. This text discusses as well the beam propagation method and the popular effective refractive index method. The final chapter deals with the significance of nonlinear phenomena. This book is a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate students of physics and electrical engineering. Practicing engineers and scientists in the fields of integrated optics, optical communications, and fiber sensors will find this book extremely useful.

Book Integrated Optics Theory and Technology

Download or read book Integrated Optics Theory and Technology written by Robert G. Hunsperger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our intent in producing this book was to provide a text that would be comprehensive enough for an introductory course in integrated optics, yet concise enough in its mathematical derivations to be easily readable by a practicing engineer who desires an overview of the field. The response to the first edition has indeed been gratifying; unusually strong demand has caused it to be sold out during the initial year of publication, thus providing us with an early opportunity to produce this updated and improved second edition. This development is fortunate, because integrated optics is a very rapidly progressing field, with significant new research being regularly reported. Hence, a new chapter (Chap. 17) has been added to review recent progress and to provide numerous additional references to the relevant technical literature. Also, thirty-five new problems for practice have been included to supplement those at the ends of chapters in the first edition. Chapters I through 16 are essentially unchanged, except for brief updating revisions and corrections of typographical errors. Because of the time limitations imposed by the need to provide an uninterrupted supply of this book to those using it as a course text, it has been possible to include new references and to briefly describe recent developments only in Chapter 17. However, we hope to provide details of this continuing progress in a future edition.

Book Integrated Optics

In this fourth edition all chapters have been completely revised.

Book Advances in Microwaves

Download or read book Advances in Microwaves written by Leo Young and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Microwaves, Volume 4 covers some innovations in the devices and applications of microwaves. This volume contains three chapters and begins with a discussion of the application of microwave phasers and time delay elements as beam steering elements in array radars. The next chapter provides first an overview of the technical aspects and different types of millimeter waveguides, followed by a survey of their application to railroads. The last chapter examines the general mode of conversion properties of nonuniform waveguides, such as waveguide tapers, using converted Maxwell’s equations, with appropriate boundary conditions, into generalized telegraphist’s equations.

Book Principles of Lasers and Optics

Download or read book Principles of Lasers and Optics written by William S. C. Chang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-20 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Lasers and Optics, first published in 2005, describes both the fundamental principles of the laser and the propagation and application of laser radiation in bulk and guided-wave components. All solid state, gas and semiconductor lasers are analysed uniformly as macroscopic devices with susceptibility originated from quantum mechanical interactions to develop an overall understanding of the coherent nature of laser radiation. Analyses of the unique properties of coherent laser light in bulk and guided-wave components are presented together and derived from fundamental principles, to allow students to appreciate the differences and similarities. Topics covered include discussions on how laser radiation should be analysed, the macroscopic differences and similarities of various analyses, special techniques, types of lasers and setting up laser analyses. This text will be useful for first-year graduates in electrical engineering and physics and also as a reference book on analytical techniques.

Book Advances in Microwaves V5

Download or read book Advances in Microwaves V5 written by Leo Young and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Microwaves, Volume 5 is a three-chapter text that covers low microwave frequencies used to accelerate elementary particles and centimeter and millimeter waves for exploring atmospheric phenomena, as well as the microwave demodulation of light. Chapter 1 describes high-speed photodetectors whose modulation frequency response extends into the microwave region. This chapter focuses on the fundamental principles of specific detectors whose performance is sufficiently close to fundamental limits to assure their staying power. Chapter 2 examines radiometric fundamentals associated with the frequency spectrum, with particular emphasis on the 3 cm to 3 mm wavelength region. Chapter 3 discusses the conditions in which hybrid waves traveling at the velocity of light can exist in a homogeneous isotropic medium. This chapter also explores the design requirements of deflectors. Discussions on transformation of Maxwell’s equations for a traveling wave in a gyroelectric or gyromagnetic medium and consistent solutions of the scalar wave equation are provided in the supplementary texts.
