Book Inhomogeneous Optical Waveguides

Download or read book Inhomogeneous Optical Waveguides written by A. Ghatak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propagation of electromagnetic waves in "square-law" media, i.e., media characterized by a quadratic spatial variation of the dielectric constant, has been a favorite subject of investigation in electromagnetic theory. However, with the recent fabrication of glass fibers with a quadratic radial variation of the dielectric constant and the application of such fibers to optical imaging and communications, this subject has also assumed practical importance. Comparison of experimental results on propagation, resolu tion, and pulse distortion in such inhomogeneous waveguides with theory has put the field on a sound base and spurred further work. The present book aims at presenting a unified view of important aspects of our knowledge of inhomogeneous optical waveguides. A brief discussion of homogeneous dielectric waveguides is unavoidable, since itforms a basis for the appreciation of inhomogeneous waveguides. A short course based on some chapters of this book was offered to graduate students at IIT Delhi and was well received. We consider that despite the unavoidable mathemati cal nature of the present book, the comparison of experimental results with theory throughout and the description of fabrication technology (Appen dixes A and B) should make its appeal universal. The authors are grateful to Dr. K. Thyagarajan for writing most of Chapter 9 and to their colleagues Dr. I. C. Goyal, Dr. B. P. Pal, and Dr. A.

Book Beam Propagation Method for Design of Optical Waveguide Devices

Download or read book Beam Propagation Method for Design of Optical Waveguide Devices written by Ginés Lifante Pedrola and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic of the BPM technique in the frequency domain relies on treating the slowly varying envelope of the monochromatic electromagnetic field under paraxial propagation, thus allowing efficient numerical computation in terms of speed and allocated memory. In addition, the BPM based on finite differences is an easy way to implement robust and efficient computer codes. This book presents several approaches for treating the light: wide-angle, scalar approach, semivectorial treatment, and full vectorial treatment of the electromagnetic fields. Also, special topics in BPM cover the simulation of light propagation in anisotropic media, non-linear materials, electro-optic materials, and media with gain/losses, and describe how BPM can deal with strong index discontinuities or waveguide gratings, by introducing the bidirectional-BPM. BPM in the time domain is also described, and the book includes the powerful technique of finite difference time domain method, which fills the gap when the standard BPM is no longer applicable. Once the description of these numerical techniques have been detailed, the last chapter includes examples of passive, active and functional integrated photonic devices, such as waveguide reflectors, demultiplexers, polarization converters, electro-optic modulators, lasers or frequency converters. The book will help readers to understand several BPM approaches, to build their own codes, or to properly use the existing commercial software based on these numerical techniques.

Download or read book Photonic Waveguides written by Azzedine Boudrioua and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the principles of non-linear integrated optics. The first objective is to provide the reader with a thorough understanding of integrated optics so that they may be able to develop the theoretical and experimental tools to study and control the linear and non-linear optical properties of waveguides. The potential use of these structures can then be determined in order to realize integrated optical components for light modulation and generation. The theoretical models are accompanied by experimental tools and their setting in order to characterize the studied phenomenon. The passage from theory to practice makes the comprehension of the physical phenomena simple and didactic. The book also gives a presentation of the industrial applications of the integrated optical components. The studied topics range from the theory of waveguides and the linear and non-linear optical characterization techniques to photonic crystals. This last field constitutes a major challenge of photonic technologies of the 21st century.

Book Bibliography of Microwave Optical Technology

Download or read book Bibliography of Microwave Optical Technology written by A. F. Harvey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although microwaves and coherent optics, being two of the largest and most useful branches of electrical engineering to emerge technologically, are usually considered as distinct subjects, many of the underlying fundamental principles, scientific achievements, and practical applications have common features. Following the evolvment of the initial principles and techniques during the closing decade of the last century, microwave engineering has long matured to a stage of ready availability of components, automation and accuracy of measurement, economical manufacturing methods, and application of sophisticated systems. Further, this development of electromagnetic phenomena having spatial and temporal coherence has, based on several centuries of study and practice of noncoherent light, in the last two decades reached the optical region. Hence, it is now practicable to consider a comprehensive treatment of these two fields, division being made by subject matter rather than by the artificial distinctions of frequency and/or wavelength ranges. However, a full text on the combined subjects would be very large and unwieldy and, thus, this Bibliography is presented in the hope that it will prove useful as a compact reference source to a large body of workers and, by putting forward the latest scientific and technical advances, stimulate a multi-disciplinary approach. The material of the book commences with the fundamentals of radiation and matter, progressing through components and devices, amplification and generation, transmission, reception and processing of information, and methods of measurement to conclude with a wide range of applications.

Book Integrated Optics Theory and Technology

Download or read book Integrated Optics Theory and Technology written by Robert G. Hunsperger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Hunsperger's Integrated Optics is one of the few texts that is comprehensive and thorough enough for use both as a classroom text (practice problems are included) and as a specialist's reference. The gratifying success of the first two editions and the continuing rapid development of the field necessitated the writing of this third edition. All chapters have been revised and updated, and a new chapter, on quantum well devices, has been added. As in the previous editions, detailed descriptions of the phenomena, devices, and technology used in optical integrated circuits and their relationship to fiber optics are presented. The trend of telecommunications toward the use of single mode systems operating at the longer wavelengths of 1.3 and 1.55 μm is explained and documented with illustrations of recently developed devices and systems. Broader coverage of GaInAsP devices and optical integrated circuits is provided, and the new growth tech- niques of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are described. A discussion of the extensive development of hybrid optical integrated circuits in lithium niobate is also included. From the reviews: I never had the opportunity of using Hunsperger as a text to teach from but after reading the present third edition, I think it must be a pleasure to do so. It is a good book because of its precise language and its didactic organization (with many clear tables), it is exhaustive in its details, and rigorous in its background; it is well suited for a graduate-level course.
