This book was released on 1995-08-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Book The Mathematical Writings of variste Galois

Download or read book The Mathematical Writings of variste Galois written by Évariste Galois and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2011 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before he died at the age of twenty, shot in a mysterious early-morning duel at the end of May 1832, Evariste Galois created mathematics that changed the direction of algebra. This book contains English translations of almost all the Galois material. The translations are presented alongside a new transcription of the original French and are enhanced by three levels of commentary. An introduction explains the context of Galois' work, the various publications in which it appears, and the vagaries of his manuscripts. Then there is a chapter in which the five mathematical articles published in his lifetime are reprinted. After that come the testamentary letter and the first memoir (in which Galois expounded on the ideas that led to Galois Theory), which are the most famous of the manuscripts. These are followed by the second memoir and other lesser known manuscripts. This book makes available to a wide mathematical and historical readership some of the most exciting mathematics of the first half of the nineteenth century, presented in its original form. The primary aim is to establish a text of what Galois wrote. The details of what he did, the proper evidence of his genius, deserve to be well understood and appreciated by mathematicians as well as historians of mathematics.

Book Electronic Universal Vade Mecum

Download or read book Electronic Universal Vade Mecum written by Piotr Mikolajczyk and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic Universal Vade-Mecum, Volume 1 considers the classification of about 15,000 types of electron devices into a number of groups. Each group includes similar devices irrespective of their marking and production origin. The group arrangement presented in this book has been devised according to a range principle, such as each group includes electron devices differing only insignificantly from those placed in neighboring groups. This indicates that any user of the vade-mecum can easily find all other types of identical or similar characteristics produced by various firms. Each group includes the following data: rated data, typical static data, dynamic (work) data, limiting values, system of socket and connection to circuit, envelope dimensions and certain electronic circuits particularly recommended for each individual group. Each group includes information pertaining to devices of different production periods. Such periods are distinguished by different type-print. Electron devices, mainly electron valves, dating from an early production period, are marked in italics, while commonly used devices are marked in ordinary type. Bold type is used for the most up-to-date and commonly used electron valves and semiconductor devices with particularly advantageous parameters. This book is of value to electronic engineers.

Book Contemporary Models in Vocational Psychology

Download or read book Contemporary Models in Vocational Psychology written by Frederick Leong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-05-18 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, prepared in honor of Samuel H. Osipow, a prominent teacher, researcher, author, and pioneer in vocational psychology, deals with significant theoretical and practical issues in the field of vocational psychology. As a state-of-the-art review of contemporary models of vocational psychology, this book will provide current and up-to-date coverage of the topics. It will also contain in-depth reviews of models of vocational psychology by leading scholars, including career decision making models, career self-efficacy, occupational stress, cross-cultural assessment of interests, and career counseling services within university systems. A major theme that runs throughout all chapters is the concept of change. This unifying theme is fitting since the authors have prepared their chapters in honor of Osipow, who has significantly changed the field over the last four decades. This volume should serve as a valuable resource for vocational psychology researchers, counseling graduate students, and career counselors. In addition to being a professional text, it should also be a useful supplement text for career development and career counseling courses in graduate programs of counseling, counseling psychology, and industrial/organizational psychology.

Book Enhancing Democratic Systems

Download or read book Enhancing Democratic Systems written by Christina Chan-Meetoo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is in Mauritius that the first newspaper of the African continent was published. Annonces, Affiches et Avis Divers was created in 1773 by the French administration for the islands of Mauritius and Reunion. Since its independence from Britain in 1968, Mauritius has known a very rich media history with an impressive number of publications and a relatively good level of press freedom. However, many challenges remain. Confrontational episodes in the relationship of the local media with the political sphere, the rise of sensationalist journalism, increased concentration of ownership in the industry as well as market uncertainties have taken their toll on a profession which often prides itself in the defence of freedom of speech and democracy. The media conference jointly organised by UNESCO and the University of Mauritius in 2010 offered a singular opportunity - the first time ever in Mauritius - for media practitioners, regulators, lawyers, politicians, academics and civil society to discuss the state of the media as part of the country's democratic systems. Media roles and functions, the legal and regulatory framework, self-regulation, market issues and new trends such as citizen journalism were thoroughly examined. This book brings together papers and conclusions from that conference. Whilst much ground has been covered especially since the emergence of private radio stations, much still needs to be done to move towards a true media democracy. The book points to media governance, access to information, training of and professionalism among media practitioners as areas of unfinished business. This is an invaluable contribution to on-going debates about press regulation, liberalisation of electronic media, new forms of journalism, continuous training and professionalization in Mauritius.
