Improved volunteer deployment may avoid these risks and present opportunities for sustainable systems change. The empirical research presented in this book stems from a specific volunteering intervention funded by the Tropical Health Education Trust and focused on improving maternal and newborn health in Uganda. Earlier work of the Lancet Independent Global Commission has been instrumental in validating the need for curricula change to include a focus on social determinants, public health priorities, and strategies to sustain healthy communities. The need to further strengthen the public health focus within health and social service education has been fuelled by the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing recognition of specific issues challenging society such as that highlighted within the technical report recently released by the World Health Organization recognizing Parkinson’s Disease as a public health issue. Each is an example of the need to prepare a future health and social service workforce well equipped in responding to major public health issues while contributing to global health and human wellbeing. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide additional evidence-based contributions to strengthen the public health focus in health and social service education. We aim to commission and publish a broad range of works including original research, case studies, pedogeological innovations, curriculum developments, program evaluations, and debate.

The authors present empirical data collected from a volunteer deployment project in Uganda focused on reducing maternal and new-born mortality and discuss the learning and experiential outcomes for UK health care professionals acting as long term volunteers in low resource settings. They also develop a model for structured placement that offers optimal learning and experiential outcomes and minimizes risk, while shedding new light on the role that international placements play as part of continuing professional development both in the UK and in other sending countries.

Book excerpt: NGOs headquartered in the North have been, for some time, prominent actors in attempts to address the poverty, lack of political representation, and labor exploitation that disproportionally affect women from the global South. Feminist NGOs and NGOs focusing on women's rights have been successful in attracting attention to their causes, but critics argue that the highly educated elites from the global North and South who run them fail to effectively question the power hierarchies in which they operate. In order to give depth to these criticisms, Sara de Jong interviewed women NGO workers in seven different European countries about their experiences and perspectives on working on gendered issues affecting women in the global South as well as migrant women in the global North. Complicit Sisters untangles and analyzes the complex tensions women NGO workers face and explores the ways in which they negotiate potential complicities in their work. Unlike other studies looking at development workers "on the ground," this book examines the women NGO workers in the global North who work to influence high level gender advocacy and policy, alongside women NGO workers supporting migrant women within the global North - a unique combination.
