There is potential for these new, exciting materials to expand into the much larger thermoset rubber markets. This review includes comparisons between the two material types. There are three major types of TPE: block copolymers, rubber/plastic blends and dynamically vulcanised rubber/plastic alloys known as thermoplastic vulcanisates. The chemistry of these materials and how.

Book Science and Technology of Rubber

Download or read book Science and Technology of Rubber written by Frederick R. Eirich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and Technology of Rubber covers the most important aspects of rubber science and technology, from synthesis and structure to elasticity and flow, blending, filling, and cross-linking. Polymerization and copolymerization, the rheological behavior of unvulcanized rubber, vulcanization, reinforcement of elastomers by particulate fillers, and the chemical modification of polymers are also discussed. This book is comprised of 14 chapters; the first ten of which take the reader from an introduction through synthesis characterization, mechanical behavior, and flow to the major processing steps of filling, compounding, and vulcanization and to the theories and measurement of elastomeric performance, leaning strongly on the ""materials"" approach. The next three chapters deal with blended, modified, and thermoplastic elastomers, touching on topics such as polymer esterification, etherification, hydrolysis, and hydrogenation as well as the influence of blending on the properties of elastomer/plastic blends, especially impact strength and crack resistance. The book concludes with a chapter on tire manufacture and engineering, with emphasis on the geometric, structural, and chemical aspects of tire. This book will be of vital interest to students, practitioners, and research and development managers, as well as to anyone interested in the unusual chemistry and physics and the outstanding properties and usefulness of elastomers.

Book Dynamically Vulcanized Pp Epdm Thermoplastic Elastomers

Download or read book Dynamically Vulcanized Pp Epdm Thermoplastic Elastomers written by Kinsuk Naskar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) is a unique polymeric material with properties and functional performance similar to those of a conventional vulcanized rubber; still it can be processed in a molten state as a thermoplastic polymer. The unique characteristics of TPEs make them very useful and attractive alternatives for conventional elastomers in a variety of markets, such as automotives, buildings and constructions, wires and cables etc. Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) are a special class of TPEs, produced by simultaneously mixing and crosslinking a rubber with a thermoplastic. TPVs based on PP/EPDM blends are the most important from a commercial viewpoint. When a peroxide is added as the crosslinking agent to a PP/EPDM blend, two competing processes take place simultaneously: EPDM crosslinking and PP degradation by chain scission. Therefore, there is a need for a proper peroxide in combination with a suitable co-agent to diminish the extent of PP degradation and improve the degree of EPDM crosslinking. The author addressed the understanding of the behaviour of various peroxides including multifunctional peroxides on the performance properties of the TPVs.

Book Thermoplastic Elastomers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chapal Kumar Das
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2015-11-26
  • ISBN : 9535122231
  • Pages : 180 pages

Download or read book Thermoplastic Elastomers written by Chapal Kumar Das and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), commonly known as thermoplastic rubbers, are a category of copolymers having thermoplastic and elastomeric characteristics. A TPE is a rubbery material with properties very close to those of conventional vulcanized rubber at normal conditions. It can be processed in a molten state even at elevated temperatures. TPEs show advantages typical of both rubbery materials and plastic materials. TPEs are a class of polymers bridging between the service properties of elastomers and the processing properties of thermoplastics. Nowadays, the best use of thermoplastics is in the field of biomedical applications, starting from artificial skin to many of the artificial human body parts. Apart from these, thermoplastic elastomers are being used for drug encapsulation purposes, and since they are biocompatible in many cases, their scope of applications has been broadened in the biotechnological field as well. The present book highlights many biological and biomedical applications of TPEs from which the broader area readers will benefit.

Book Developments in Rubber Technology 2

Download or read book Developments in Rubber Technology 2 written by A. Whelan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for those people who have a knowledge or understanding of rubber materials and processes but who wish to update their knowledge. It should be read in conjunction with Developments in Rubber Technology-l as that volume discussed developments in natural rubber and selected special purpose synthetic rubbers as well as additives. The authors have been selected for their expertise in each particular field and we, as editors, would like to express our appreciation to the individual authors and also to their companies. Such a book would be impossible to produce without such active cooperation as we have received. Volumes 1 and 2 of Developments in Rubber Technology cover rubbers which are processed and vulcanised in the traditional manner. It is appreciated that the omission of non-vulcanised rubber materials (the so called thermoplastic elastomers) will be unwelcome to many readers but it is intended, because of the size of the subject, to cover these materials in a subsequent volume.
