Book excerpt: In this riveting insider's chronicle, legendary Marine General "Brute" Krulak submits an unprecedented examination of U.S. Marines—their fights on the battlefield and off, their extraordinary esprit de corps. Deftly blending history with autobiography, action with analysis, and separating fact from fable, General Krulak touches the very essence of the Corps: what it means to be a Marine and the reason behind its consistently outstanding performance and reputation. Krulak also addresses the most basic but challenging question of all about the Corps: how does it manage to survive—even to flourish—despite overwhelming political odds and, as the general writes, ""an extraordinary propensity for shooting itself in the foot?"" To answer this question Krulak examines the foundation on which the Corps is built, a system of intense loyalty to God, to country, and to other Marines. He also takes a close look at Marines in war, offering challenging accounts of their experiences in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. In addition, he describes the Corps's relationship to other services, especially during the unification battles following World War II, and offers new insights into the decision-making process in times of crisis. First published in hardcover in 1984, this book has remained popular ever since with Marines of every rank.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambushed in Afghanistan and betrayed by their own leaders—these elite Marines fought for their lives again, back home. A cross between A Few Good Men and American Sniper, this is the true story of an elite Marine special operations unit bombed by an IED and shot at during an Afghanistan ambush. The Marine Commandos were falsely accused of gunning down innocent Afghan civilians following the ambush. The unit’s leader, Maj. Fred Galvin, was summarily relieved of duty and his unit was booted from the combat zone. They were condemned by everyone, from the Afghan president to American generals. When Fox Company returned to America, Galvin and his captain were the targets of the first Court of Inquiry in the Marines in fifty years. “Fred Galvin is the real deal. His dramatic retelling of his experience as commander of Fox Company reads like a thriller, full of twists and turns, filled with unassuming heroes and deceitful villains.” — Rob Lorenz, Producer/Director, American Sniper, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Mystic River, The Marksman “Fred Galvin has written a real ‘page turner’ that demonstrates how politics permeates The Pentagon and posts abroad…I highly recommend this book.” — J.D. Hayworth, U.S. House of Representatives (Arizona), TV/Radio Host “This book is a must-read for every American who wants to know why, after twenty long years in Afghanistan, we did not win.” — Jessie Jane Duff, USMC, Analyst, CNN and FOX “A Few Bad Men is a must-read story of valor, betrayal, and keeping the Marines’ honor clean.” — Jed Babbin, USAF Judge Advocate, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, Journalist, National Review, Washington Post “An incredible account and history of the fighting spirit of the ‘Marine Raiders’ under fire and the relentless fourteen-year campaign by their leader to clear their names.” — Maj. Gen. Paul Vallely, U.S. Army (Ret.), Deputy Commander, U.S. Pacific Command

Heart for the Fight is the story of Brian Stann, a kid from the wrong side of Scranton who made it to the Naval Academy, played linebacker for the Navy football team, became a Marine officer, graduated first in his infantry officer class, led his men in two intense combat tours in the Anbar Province of Iraq, received the Silver Star for gallantry, and emerged as one of the most interesting figures in the mixed martial arts (MMA) professional circuit. A former light-heavyweight champion in the WED (World Extreme Cagefighting), he also fought in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), the “big leagues” of mixed martial arts. Praise for Heart for the Fight “Brian Stann has a remarkable story to tell and Heart for the Fight is a worthwhile read for those interested in the Iraq War or Stann’s MMA career.” —Los Angeles Times “After reading [Stann’s] book, Heart for the Fight, the only word that will come to your mind about Brian Stann is respect. This is an autobiography about a man who has been through and seen so much more than the average American citizen . . . When you finish reading this book, it becomes evident that ‘All-American’ is not just his MMA nickname, it’s exactly what he is.” —Bleacher Report “Reason to Read: Stann is a badass. There’s just no other way to describe him. If he never wins another fight in the Octagon, he’ll still be a badass. The man led his troops through two intense combat tours and received a Silver Star for gallantry. Now, he fights for the UFC and works as Executive Director of HireHeroes USA, a link to job opportunities for servicemen and women.” —FightMagazine

Book Mackenzie s Five Thousand Receipts in All the Useful and Domestic Arts

Download or read book Mackenzie s Five Thousand Receipts in All the Useful and Domestic Arts written by An American Physician and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1829 in Philadelphia, Mackenzie’s Five Thousand Receipts in All the Useful and Domestic Arts was an unknown “American physician’s” adaptation of a best-selling British reference book by Colin Mackenzie. The book is an all-encompassing miscellanea of household information specifically revised from its original British publication for use in the United States. Covering everything from gardening, metallurgy, and pickling and preserving to watercolors, medical cures, perfumery, brewing, and cooking, this early 19th century compendium was an essential guide for cooking and managing a household during this time period. With the extensive material covered, the tome was very well received in America, as was the original publication in the United Kingdom. Even though the work was first published nearly 200 years ago, the recipes and advice have proven to be relevant today—lip balms citing the book as the recipe source can be found on the Internet, as well as numerous blogs referring to the brewing section of the book. While recipes such as Acorn Coffee, Clove Cordial, and Elephant’s Milk may only be of historical interest, Mackenzie’s Five Thousand Receipts in All the Useful and Domestic Arts still has significance today beyond simple historical curiosity. This edition of Mackenzie’s Five Thousand Receipts in All the Useful and Domestic Arts was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection comprises approximately 1,100 volumes.
