Book Flow and Transport in Porous Media and Fractured Rock

Download or read book Flow and Transport in Porous Media and Fractured Rock written by Muhammad Sahimi and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this standard reference of the field, theoretical and experimental approaches to flow, hydrodynamic dispersion, and miscible displacements in porous media and fractured rock are considered. Two different approaches are discussed and contrasted with each other. The first approach is based on the classical equations of flow and transport, called 'continuum models'. The second approach is based on modern methods of statistical physics of disordered media; that is, on 'discrete models', which have become increasingly popular over the past 15 years. The book is unique in its scope, since (1) there is currently no book that compares the two approaches, and covers all important aspects of porous media problems; and (2) includes discussion of fractured rocks, which so far has been treated as a separate subject. Portions of the book would be suitable for an advanced undergraduate course. The book will be ideal for graduate courses on the subject, and can be used by chemical, petroleum, civil, environmental engineers, and geologists, as well as physicists, applied physicist and allied scientists that deal with various porous media problems.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-22
  • ISBN : 364238739X
  • Pages : 1018 pages

Download or read book FEFLOW written by Hans-Jörg G. Diersch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 1018 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FEFLOW is an acronym of Finite Element subsurface FLOW simulation system and solves the governing flow, mass and heat transport equations in porous and fractured media by a multidimensional finite element method for complex geometric and parametric situations including variable fluid density, variable saturation, free surface(s), multispecies reaction kinetics, non-isothermal flow and multidiffusive effects. FEFLOW comprises theoretical work, modeling experiences and simulation practice from a period of about 40 years. In this light, the main objective of the present book is to share this achieved level of modeling with all required details of the physical and numerical background with the reader. The book is intended to put advanced theoretical and numerical methods into the hands of modeling practitioners and scientists. It starts with a more general theory for all relevant flow and transport phenomena on the basis of the continuum approach, systematically develops the basic framework for important classes of problems (e.g., multiphase/multispecies non-isothermal flow and transport phenomena, discrete features, aquifer-averaged equations, geothermal processes), introduces finite-element techniques for solving the basic balance equations, in detail discusses advanced numerical algorithms for the resulting nonlinear and linear problems and completes with a number of benchmarks, applications and exercises to illustrate the different types of problems and ways to tackle them successfully (e.g., flow and seepage problems, unsaturated-saturated flow, advective-diffusion transport, saltwater intrusion, geothermal and thermohaline flow).

Book Mathematical Models and Finite Elements for Reservoir Simulation

Download or read book Mathematical Models and Finite Elements for Reservoir Simulation written by G. Chavent and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical simulators for oil reservoirs have been developed over the last twenty years and are now widely used by oil companies. The research, however, has taken place largely within the industry itself, and has remained somewhat inaccessible to the scientific community. This book hopes to remedy the situation by means of its synthesized presentation of the models used in reservoir simulation, in a form understandable to both mathematicians and engineers. The book aims to initiate a rigorous mathematical study of the immiscible flow models, partly by using the novel `global pressure' approach in treating incompressible two-phase problems. A finite element approximation technique based on the global pressure variational model is presented, and new approaches to the modelling of various kinds of multiphase flow through porous media are introduced.Much of the material is highly original, and has not been presented elsewhere. The mathematical and numerical models should be of great interest to applied mathematicians, and to engineers seeking an alternative approach to reservoir modelling.

Book Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks

Download or read book Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks written by B.B.S. Singhal † and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrology is a topical and growing subject, as the earth's water resources become scarcer and more vulnerable. Although more than half the surface area of continents is covered with hard fractured rocks, there has until now been no single book available dealing specifically with fractured rock hydrogeology. This book deals comprehensively with the fundamental principles for understanding these rocks, as well as with exploration techniques and assessment. It also provides in-depth discussion of structural mapping, remote sensing, geophysical exploration, GIS, field hydraulic testing, groundwater quality and contamination, geothermal reservoirs, and resources assessment and management. Hydrogeological aspects of various lithology groups, including crystalline rocks, volcanic rocks, carbonate rocks and clastic formations, are dealt with separately, using and discussing examples from all over the world. Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks will be an invaluable reference source for postgraduate students, researchers, exploration scientists, and engineers engaged in the field of groundwater development in fractured rock areas.
