Book excerpt: Three hilarious, quirky tales about a young city girl's adventures big and small, from taking a taxi to meeting the president. Lore Segal's classic children's book tells three stories about Mitzi and her family, whose lives unfold within a gritty and yet dreamy cityscape of stoops and row houses that seem to have emerged from a time out of time. In the first story, Mitzi dresses up her baby brother and sets out with him to visit their grandparents, a venturesome undertaking that takes a curious turn when a key piece of information proves missing. In the second, Mitzi's whole family falls sick, but a fool-proof remedy rides in to the rescue. In the last, the president comes to town and Mitzi's day is made. Lore Segal's droll dialogue and off-kilter storytelling are beautifully complemented by Harriet Pincus’s unnervingly earnest and goofy underground comic-book style illustrations, which won the praise of Maurice Sendak. These are stories about childhood independence and family closeness that capture childhood in all its puzzlement, resourcefulness, unsentimental wonder.

Book The Literary Construction of the Other in the Acts of the Apostles

Download or read book The Literary Construction of the Other in the Acts of the Apostles written by Mitzi J. Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often the negative characterization of "others" in the biblical text is applied to groups and persons beyond the text whom we wish to define as the Other. Otherness is a synthetic and political social construct that allows us to create and maintain boundaries between "them" and "us." The other that is too similar to us is most problematic. This book demonstrates how proximate characters are constructed as the Other in the Acts of the Apostles. Charismatics, Jews, and women are proximate others who are constructed as the external and internal Other.

Serial killers: Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer are often the first names that spring to mind. Many people assume serial killers are primarily an American phenomenon that came about in the latter part of the twentieth century—but such assumptions are far from the truth. Serial killers have been around for a long time and can be found in every corner of the globe―and they’re not just limited to the male gender, either. Some of these predators have been caught and brought to justice whereas others have never been found, let alone identified. Serial killers can be anywhere. And scarier still, they can be anyone. Edited by acclaimed author and anthologist Mitzi Szereto, The Best New True Crime Stories: Serial Killers reveals all-new accounts of true-crime serial killers from the contemporary to the historic. The international list of contributors includes award-winning crime writers, true-crime podcasters, journalists, and experts in the dark crimes field such as Martin Edwards, Lee Mellor, Danuta Kot, Craig Pittman, Richard O. Jones, Marcie Rendon, Mike Browne, and Vicki Hendricks. This book will leave you wondering if it’s ever really possible to know who’s behind the mask you’re allowed to see. Perfect for readers of true crime books such as I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Mindhunter, The Devil in the White City, or Sons of Cain. “An engrossing and multi-faceted anthology for a new era of true crime writing.” ―Piper Weiss, author of You All Grow Up and Leave Me

Book The Reality of Being Decoded

Download or read book The Reality of Being Decoded written by Mitzi DeWhitt and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To be one, whole in the face of life, is all that matters. So long as I remain conscious of this, I feel a life within me and a peace that nothing else can give. The words are Madame de Salzmanns, from the final page of her book The Reality of Being. I read them and feel good. For a moment I experience the peace that passeth understanding. At that same moment I realize my incapacity and my non-comprehension and I feel bad. Stabbed in the heart by the sword of gnosis I want to run away, fall back into complacency. I see how I am, divided. Do I care? So long as I remain trapped in passivity, nothing new can appear: no Newness, no New Man, no New World. Do I really wish to explore the Unknown? Or am I only an armchair adventurer, a dreamer vicariously gaining the experience from anothers travels? How can I know myself? My journey to inaccessible places begins with seeing that I am two: I wish, I do not wish. The act of seeing itself is the appearance of I. Not the ordinary I that is deeply afraid and wishes only for security, but the real I, pure, uncontaminated by fear, grounded in love. Without it I will never know what is true, never enter a world entirely new. Her words convey deep meaning, far deeper than we ordinarily realize. To discover the New World requires knowing how to measure. Without the science of measures I cannot go far. It is my measure, the measure both of my capacity and of the quality of my moment of work. Knowing the code of measures, I can decipher the reality of who I am. This book provides the keys to the code.

Book Multiple Worlds of Child Writers

Download or read book Multiple Worlds of Child Writers written by Anne Haas Dyson and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a two-year study of first graders at a magnet school in the San Francisco Bay Area, Multiple Worlds of Child Writers: Friends Learning to Write provides an important missing link in the study of emergent literacy: the peer group and the classroom contexts that surround it. Using four richly detailed case studies, the author portrays the process through which Margaret, the teacher, and her children form a community, one supported by and supporting of the children’s growth as writers. Dyson offers new perspectives by displaying the quality of life in the classroom through children’s talk, drawings, and writing. The theoretical framework presented here for understanding children’s growth moves what is usually considered background to the foreground for study. Most works on children’s writing stress that children must “disembed” or “decontextualize” their written texts from dependency on other symbolic media and other people. Dyson, however, shows that to develop as writers, children’s text must become progressively more embedded in the social, affective, and intellectual parts of their lives. The book also emphasizes the nature of the classroom rather than the home as a distinctive context for early literacy growth. Moreover, the classroom is an urban one that includes children from diverse social and ethnic backgrounds. The classroom and children whose lives fill this book challenge current thinking about such critical issues as the developmental links between writing and other symbol systems, sequence and variability in early writing growth, the relationship between form and function in young children’s writing, and the development of literary language. This book is a must for early childhood educators, reading and language arts specialists, and scholars/researchers in the field of literacy.
