Book excerpt: "The publication of Genealogies of Kentucky Families offers researchers an unprecedented opportunity to acquire a complete collection of the two-hundred family history articles published originally in The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society and The Filson Club Quarterly. With the cooperation of both The Filson Club and the Kentucky Historical Society, we have excerpted the family history articles from the above-named journals and have reprinted them in three large volumes. Two of the three volumes are composed of articles excerpted from the Register (covering families in alphabetical sequence from A-M and O-Y); the third volume is made up entirely of articles excerpted from the Filson Club History Quarterly. The combined articles are preceded by introductory remarks written by the editors of the two periodicals, James Klotter of the Register and Nelson Dawson of the Quarterly. Each volume, moreover, is published with its own index."--Amazon.

Download or read book Colonels in Blue Indiana Kentucky and Tennessee written by Roger D. Hunt and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biographical dictionary documents the Union army colonels who commanded regiments from Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. Entries are arranged first by state and then by regiment, and provide a biographical sketch of each colonel focusing on his Civil War service. Many of the colonels covered herein never rose above that rank, failing to win promotion to brigadier general or brevet brigadier general, and have therefore received very little scholarly attention prior to this work.
Download or read book The Kimberlins Go to War written by Michael B. Murphy and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As July 7, 1861, dawned, war was in the air in Lexington, Indiana. The county seat of Scott County was abuzz with the latest news of the southern rebellion. The _Madison Daily and Evening Courier_ told of skirmishes between Federal troops and “secesh” forces at Harpers Ferry and Falling Waters, Virginia. Closer to home, word had come that William A. Sanderson had organized a new outfit, the Twenty-Third Indiana, and was recruiting throughout the Second Congressional District for men to join the regiment. Although Scott County had been rife with sympathy and support for the South, answering the call to serve the Union cause from the county were Jacob T. Kimberlin, a twenty-one-year-old farmhand; his older brother, John J.; and his cousins, William H. H. Kimberlin, Benjamin F. Kimberlin, and James Stark. These five young men could not have known at the time that none of them would ever again see their homes. They only knew that the Kimberlins were going to war. This is the story of the Kimberlin family that sent thirty-three fathers and sons, brothers and cousins, to fight for the Union during the Civil War. Ten family members were killed, wounded, or died of battlefield disease, a 30 percent casualty rate that is unmatched in recorded Scott County history. Of the 134 known deaths of Scott County soldiers, ten were members of the Kimberlin clan. Their feelings about the war come from forty letters to and from the battlefield that have survived to this day. The book examines such questions as: Were they fighting to save the Union or to free the slaves? How did they express grief over the loss of a brother? Did they keep up with their business and the women at home? And what did they think about “secesh” neighbors in southern Indiana who tried to undermine the Union?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why did Pa have to die?" What Pa was involved in had been handed down from generation to generation. The Hill's and the Evans' had fought over land and squabbled over money for years - taking each other to court, putting up unseen boundaries on land to keep each other out. Mary Hill didn't understand everything about the feud. She knew that Uncle Jesse was shot and killed two years ago, but was really too young to grasp what had happened. So young, and so familiar with sorrow, Mary struggles to keep her family together in the midst of a bitter and violent feud. Just fifteen years old, she is thrust into the role of mother to her twelve siblings, fearful that, with the coming of each new day, a new tragedy will strike. By escaping Garrard County, Mary may be able to save her family from further bloodshed, but can she get them all out in time?
