Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sweet Anne Page, Vol. 1 of 3 Miss Harriet officiated as school-mistress to all but Stephen. He was rather older than any of his cousins, but his aunt's reason for giving him up was his pertinacity in asking questions which she was unable to answer. So he was sent just now to an old-fashioned day-school in which boys and girls were mixed, and where he had positively managed to fall in love already. There is nothing strange in that; but it so happened that Stephen's little love-fancy was destined to colour his whole life. What a lazy boy you are! Went on Aunt Harriet. Have you no lessons to learn? You learn nothing at Miss Martin's. Not very much, aunt, said Stephen. She never will answer my questions. I asked her to-day whether she didn't think Christian in the Pilgrim's Progress' a very bad man for running away from his wife, and she called me a wicked boy, and made me stand on the form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fugitive Anne At the other side of the table, Opposite the Dane, and apparently interested too, in the affair of Mrs Bedo's locked door, stood an Australian black boy in European dress - that is, in a steward's dress of white linen, with a napkin in his hand for it had happened that Kombo, Mr and Mrs Bedo s aboriginal servant, had, with the permission of his master and mistress, taken the place of a Chinese boy, temporarily disabled by a malarial fever. These people were at the upper end of the saloon, near which was Mrs Bedo's cabin. At the lower end, the remaining passengers, with the purser and another steward, had congregated. The passengers were few; a Javanese shipping agent, a Catholic priest, a person connected with telegraphs, and two or three bushmen on their way back from Singapore or Europe, as the case might be. These were all waiting, with gaping mouths and open eyes, for the tragedy which they imagined would be disclosed. For it was Openly suspected on board, that Mrs Bedo disliked and feared her husband. Mr Bedo had been knocking violently at the cabin door, but no answer was returned. He was a coarse, powerful person, with an ill-featured face, a sinewy throat, and great, brawny hands. He had started in life as a bullock driver and was now a rich man, having struck gold In the early days Of Charters Towers Diggings - before, indeed, Charters Towers had become Officially established. Book Mrs Anne Hutchinson

Download or read book Mrs Anne Hutchinson written by Henry Leland Chapman and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mrs. Anne Hutchinson: A Paper Read Before the New England Historic Genealogical Society, February 6, 1901 Francis Bacon, in his essay of Truth, translates and quotes with approval a saying of Lucretius, which may, not unfitly, stand as a Prologue, or a motto, to a paper which undertakes, after more than two centuries and a half, to review the salient incidents in the picturesque and painful career of Anne Hutchinson. "It is a pleasure," says Lucretius, "to stand upon the shore, and to see ships tost upon the sea; a pleasure to stand in the window of a castle, and to see a battle and the adventures thereof below; but no pleasure is comparable to the standing upon the vantage ground of Truth, and to see the errors, and wanderings, and mists, and tempests in the vale below." That there were errors and wanderings, as well as mists and tempests, in the infant town of Boston during the years of which I am to speak, is certain; that they gathered largely about the person of mistress anne Hutchinson, if they were not wholly due to her active influence and her restless tongue, is equally certain; but it is not so certain that, even from our present vantage ground of truth, we can justly estimate either the provocation or the intolerance of the prosecution and punishment which she suffered. It is so difficult to enter intelligently into the conditions and the differences of a long-past generation that our judgments concerning them must of necessity be cautious and tentative. Mistress Hutchinson made her advent to Boston in September, 1634. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Experience World War 2 through the eyes of two very different women in this captivating New York Times bestseller by the author of The Guest Book. “A beautifully written, thought-provoking novel.”—Kathryn Stockett, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Help In 1940, Iris James is the postmistress in coastal Franklin, Massachusetts. Iris knows more about the townspeople than she will ever say, and believes her job is to deliver secrets. Yet one day she does the unthinkable: slips a letter into her pocket, reads it, and doesn't deliver it. Meanwhile, Frankie Bard broadcasts from overseas with Edward R. Murrow. Her dispatches beg listeners to pay heed as the Nazis bomb London nightly. Most of the townspeople of Franklin think the war can't touch them. But both Iris and Frankie know better... The Postmistress is a tale of two worlds-one shattered by violence, the other willfully naïve—and of two women whose job is to deliver the news, yet who find themselves unable to do so. Through their eyes, and the eyes of everyday people caught in history's tide, it examines how stories are told, and how the fact of war is borne even through everyday life.

Book Mistress of Udolpho

Download or read book Mistress of Udolpho written by Rictor Norton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1999-05-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the biography of the Gothic novelist, Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823), author of "The Mysteries of Udolpho", the world's first "best seller". The text clarifies Radcliffe's emergence from a Dissenting Unitarian, rather than a conventional Anglican, background. This places Radcliffe within the circle of other women writers nurtured in radical Dissenting backgrounds (such as Wollstonecraft, Hays, Inchbauld and Barbauld). Radcliffe's childhood and family background are documented and the rumours of her madness and reclusiveness investigated leading to an evaluation of the resons for her probable mental breakdown. The text constitutes a "cultural history" of a writing woman, demonstrating her place within radical culture, literary tradition and aesthetic discourse, and examining her role in the rise of the professional woman writer. Her novels are analyzed mainly in the context of her biography and sources.

Book The Creation of the French Royal Mistress

Download or read book The Creation of the French Royal Mistress written by Tracy Adams and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kings throughout medieval and early modern Europe had extraconjugal sexual partners. Only in France, however, did the royal mistress become a quasi-institutionalized political position. This study explores the emergence and development of the position of French royal mistress through detailed portraits of nine of its most significant incumbents: Agnès Sorel, Anne de Pisseleu d’Heilly, Diane de Poitiers, Gabrielle d’Estrées, Françoise Louise de La Baume Le Blanc, Françoise Athénaïs de Rochechouart de Mortemart, Françoise d’Aubigné, Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, and Jeanne Bécu. Beginning in the fifteenth century, key structures converged to create a space at court for the royal mistress. The first was an idea of gender already in place: that while women were legally inferior to men, they were men’s equals in competence. Because of their legal subordinacy, queens were considered to be the safest regents for their husbands, and, subsequently, the royal mistress was the surest counterpoint to the royal favorite. Second, the Renaissance was a period during which people began to experience space as theatrical. This shift to a theatrical world opened up new ways of imagining political guile, which came to be positively associated with the royal mistress. Still, the role had to be activated by an intelligent, charismatic woman associated with a king who sought women as advisors. The fascinating particulars of each case are covered in the chapters of this book. Thoroughly researched and compellingly narrated, this important study explains why the tradition of a politically powerful royal mistress materialized at the French court, but nowhere else in Europe. It will appeal to anyone interested in the history of the French monarchy, women and royalty, and gender studies.
