Download or read book Animals and Ourselves written by Kathy Merlock Jackson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between humans and animals has always been strong, symbiotic and complicated. Animals, real and fictional, have been a mainstay in the arts and entertainment, figuring prominently in literature, film, television, social media, and live performances. Increasingly, though, people are anthropomorphizing animals, assigning them humanoid roles, tasks and identities. At the same time, humans, such as members of the furry culture or college mascots, find pleasure in adopting animal identities and characteristics. This book is the first of its kind to explore these growing phenomena across media. The contributors to this collection represent various disciplines, to include the arts, humanities, social sciences, and healthcare. Their essays demonstrate the various ways that human and animal lives are intertwined and constantly evolving.

Download or read book Mr Ed s Class written by Heather Fromm and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is about a little girl being abused and a young man with a drinking problem. They work things out together in a lyrical way. I offer the story to young and old to open their minds to new possiblities. My hopes is when a child and adult reads the book it opens debate between the two. I tried to write the book in a creative way so the child is more at ease with the conversation. And also maybe open a door to humanity.
Download or read book Moveable Designs Liminal Aesthetics and Cultural Production in America since 1772 written by Stefan L. Brandt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the liminal aesthetics of U.S. cultural and literary practice. Interrogating the notion of a presumptive unity of the American experience, Moveable Designs argues that inner conflict, divisiveness, and contradiction are integral to the nation’s cultural designs, themes, and motifs. The study suggests that U.S. literary and cultural practice is permeated by ‘moveable designs’—flexible, yet constant features of hegemonial practice that constitute an integral element of American national self-fashioning. The naturally pervasive liminality of U.S. cultural production is the key to understanding the resilience of American culture. Moveable Designs looks at artistic expressions across various media types (literature, paintings, film, television), seeking to illuminate critical phases of U.S. American literature and culture—from the revolutionary years to the movements of romanticism, realism, and modernism, up to the postmodern era. It combines a wide array of approaches, from cultural history and social anthropology to phenomenology. Connecting an analysis of literary and cultural texts with approaches from design theory, the book proposes a new way of understanding American culture as design. It is one of the unique characteristics of American culture that it creates—or, rather, designs—potency out of its inner conflicts and apparent disunities. That which we describe as an identifiable ‘American identity’ is actually the product of highly vulnerable, alternating processes of dissolution and self-affirmation.
Download or read book TV in the USA 3 volumes written by Vincent LoBrutto and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 1785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This three-volume set is a valuable resource for researching the history of American television. An encyclopedic range of information documents how television forever changed the face of media and continues to be a powerful influence on society. What are the reasons behind enduring popularity of television genres such as police crime dramas, soap operas, sitcoms, and "reality TV"? What impact has television had on the culture and morality of American life? Does television largely emulate and reflect real life and society, or vice versa? How does television's influence differ from that of other media such as newspapers and magazines, radio, movies, and the Internet? These are just a few of the questions explored in the three-volume encyclopedia TV in the USA: A History of Icons, Idols, and Ideas. This expansive set covers television from 1950 to the present day, addressing shows of all genres, well-known programs and short-lived series alike, broadcast on the traditional and cable networks. All three volumes lead off with a keynote essay regarding the technical and historical features of the decade(s) covered. Each entry on a specific show investigates the narrative, themes, and history of the program; provides comprehensive information about when the show started and ended, and why; and identifies the star players, directors, producers, and other key members of the crew of each television production. The set also features essays that explore how a particular program or type of show has influenced or reflected American society, and it includes numerous sidebars packed with interesting data, related information, and additional insights into the subject matter.
Download or read book What America Watched written by Marsha Ann Tate and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although television critics have often differed with the public with respect to the artistic and cultural merits of television programming, over the last half-century television has indubitably influenced popular culture and vice versa. No matter what reasons are cited--the characters, the actors, the plots, the music--television shows that were beloved by audiences in their time remain fondly remembered. This study covers the classic period of popular television shows from the 1960s through the 1990s, focusing on how regular viewers interacted with television shows on a personal level. Bridging popular and scholarly approaches, this book discovers what America actually watched and why through documents, footage, visits to filming locations, newspapers, and magazine articles from the shows' eras. The book features extensive notes and bibliography.

Nate has taken a distinct dislike to people on the internet who think they can say anything, with impunity. Silver can help with that. Karen does not like the filth on the internet. She is not too happy with the filth, in the American streets, either. Silver can help with that, also. Donna and Donnie have decided that it is time to make something of their lives. And why not? They will be two years old, soon. What should they do? Cure cancer? End the violence in America’s inner cities? Create a multi-billion-dollar business that lifts the residents of those inner cities out of poverty? Why not all of the above? Silver can help with that, as can the rest of their family team. The obstacles of city hall, the unions, organized crime, and, of course, other aliens, are no obstacles, at all, to Donald’s family. The opportunities are limitless, when Silver gains sentience. Spider says that is impossible for a machine to feel. Silver says that the word ‘impossible’ is no longer relevant. He may be correct.

Download or read book Mr Strangelove written by Ed Sikov and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Sellers was a genius, whose unique mastery created enduring comic characters. But behind the man that could make the world laugh was a tragic sadness. Employing his creations as masks to hide behind, Sellers was convinced his own life was meaningless and empty. Acclaimed (On Sunset Boulevard - the story of Billy WIlder) biographer Ed Sikov has spoken to many who knew and worked with Sellers, including Sophia Loren, Goldie Hawn, and Roman Polanski. Sikov reveals how Sellers was a casualty of his own insecurities and used his public persona to mask his tormented private life, littered with four marriages (and three divorces), countless affairs, and drug and alcohol abuse. This is the authoritative and touching story of a majestic comedian, showing the very private face of a man whose world was lived through the public arena. 'An authoritative biography and a compulsive page turner.' Michael Palin, New York Times 'Sikov's book is often melancholy, but always informative, and entertaining... They don't really make 'em like that any more - you can't get the wood you know' Simon Louvish, Guardian
Download or read book George Burns Television Productions written by Richard Irvin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-05-26 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An elementary school dropout, George Burns went on to become one of America's most beloved entertainers. This book covers a neglected part of his career--his work as a television producer. Burns was not only a behind-the-scenes producer, but also filled the role of producer in various comedies in which he starred. Though his forte was situation comedies, Burns' company, McCadden Productions, also produced dramatic anthology series and pilots, including a pilot considered to be a precursor to the popular TV series Mission: Impossible. This book focuses on Burns' wide variety of production efforts, and follows his involvement in television productions from his 1950 comedy series with his wife, Gracie Allen, through his participation in the fantasy sitcom Mister Ed, and finally to his last producer credit in 1981, I Love Her Anyway, a remake of The Burns and Allen Show.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald and Spider’s family continues to grow. Their multiple, specialized operations continue onward and are doing great things. Not so great things for those in positions of power and those on the underbelly of society, but great for everyone else on the planet. When the twins, Donna and Donnie, take on the ambitious, impossible project of mapping the entire universe, the Waldheim family finds itself living off-world for a year. A lot can happen in a year. A lot does happen in a year. When the family returns to Earth, they discover a human population of less than three-hundred-million and that number is dropping, precipitously. No alien force, microbe, or world conflict has resulted in the deaths of the billions of humans. Something else is at work. The Greys and the Nordics are not going to be any help. It appears that they were the first to be killed. The family has to get to the bottom of things, rapidly. Throw in the Gospel according to Spider, a family operation combatting worldwide human trafficking, an addition of more Saskaç family members, a few kitten family members, and an unprovoked assault upon Donald’s Island by a military coalition of ten nations, and you have just another, business as usual, doing the impossible and making it look easy, romp for Donald’s family. Keep your arms and hands inside the car, at all times.
