Book Four Revolutions in the Earth Sciences

Download or read book Four Revolutions in the Earth Sciences written by James Lawrence Powell and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the twentieth century, scientists came to accept four counterintuitive yet fundamental facts about the Earth: deep time, continental drift, meteorite impact, and global warming. When first suggested, each proposition violated scientific orthodoxy and was quickly denounced as scientific—and sometimes religious—heresy. Nevertheless, after decades of rejection, scientists came to accept each theory. The stories behind these four discoveries reflect more than the fascinating push and pull of scientific work. They reveal the provocative nature of science and how it raises profound and sometimes uncomfortable truths as it advances. For example, counter to common sense, the Earth and the solar system are older than all of human existence; the interactions among the moving plates and the continents they carry account for nearly all of the Earth's surface features; and nearly every important feature of our solar system results from the chance collision of objects in space. Most surprising of all, we humans have altered the climate of an entire planet and now threaten the future of civilization. This absorbing scientific history is the only book to describe the evolution of these four ideas from heresy to truth, showing how science works in practice and how it inevitably corrects the mistakes of its practitioners. Scientists can be wrong, but they do not stay wrong. In the process, astonishing ideas are born, tested, and over time take root.

Book The Science of Middle earth

Download or read book The Science of Middle earth written by Roland Lehoucq and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surprising and illuminating look at how Tolkien's love of science and natural history shaped the creation of his Middle Earth, from its flora and fauna to its landscapes. The world J.R.R. Tolkien created is one of the most beloved in all of literature, and continues to capture hearts and imaginations around the world. From Oxford to ComiCon, the Middle Earth is analyzed and interpreted through a multitude of perspectives. But one essential facet of Tolkien and his Middle Earth has been overlooked: science. This great writer, creator of worlds and unforgettable character, and inventor of language was also a scientific autodidact, with an innate interest and grasp of botany, paleontologist and geologist, with additional passions for archeology and chemistry. Tolkien was an acute observer of flora and fauna and mined the minds of his scientific friends about ocean currents and volcanoes. It is these layers science that give his imaginary universe—and the creatures and characters that inhabit it—such concreteness. Within this gorgeously illustrated edition, a range of scientists—from astrophysicists to physicians, botanists to volcanologists—explore Tolkien’s novels, poems, and letters to reveal their fascinating scientific roots. A rewarding combination of literary exploration and scientific discovery, The Science of Middle Earth reveals the hidden meaning of the Ring’s corruption, why Hobbits have big feet, the origins of the Dwarves, the animals which inspired the dragons, and even whether or not an Ent is possible. Enhanced by superb original drawings, this transportive work will delight both Tolkien fans and science lovers and inspire us to view both Middle Earth—and our own world—with fresh eyes.

Book Mistake Earth Science

  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Mistake Earth Science written by Hans-Joachim Zillmer and published by Trafford on Demand Pub. This book was released on 2007 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his bestseller, Darwin's Mistake, which has meanwhile been translated into ten languages, the independent private scholar and consulting civil engineer Hans-Joachim Zillmer has proved that there were megaflood processes and cataclysms but no (macro-)evolution, whereas Mistake Earth Science presents a global revolution in the truest sense of the word in an exciting format. It's a lot of fireworks of facts and evidence, but also "live" excavations with the author and visits to all continents permit a radical revision of previously imagined worlds in favor of newer, trend-setting models of thought. The various alternative models of thought that were previously introduced by the author have meanwhile been scientifically confirmed: a shift in the earth's axis of at least 20 degrees at the time of the dinosaurs, and also some cataclysms - the "global" deluge? - at the time of human life, because genetic investigations have shown that mankind had once almost died out. Or also, for example, that birds simply don't descend from dinosaurs. Here, the author also documents each piece of evidence that is to be checked out against the theory of evolution, which thereby ends as a beautifully fictional fairy-tale. In this book, geological and geophysical scenarios and facts are introduced that are still widely relatively unknown. How does one explain that what was previously regarded as the "cradle" of evolutionary theory is geologically too young? Because the Galapagos Islands are only a few million years old and do not stem from the time of the dinosaurs as Charles Darwin erroneously suspected. Why were the largest hippos ever swimming in the rivers of Central European, and this was during the great ice age as well? Dinosaurs once lived on all continents, even on Spitsbergen and in Alaska and at the South pole, since there was a tropical climate from pole to pole. And now even today, the polar cap ice is melting down dramatically rapidly. In a few thousand years, there will not be any more ice, just as it was during the Mesozoic era, at both poles. More and more new finds of the same dinosaur species on almost all continents, but also on both sides of the Atlantic, have put continental drift in the form in which it has been promoted until now into question. On the basis of the most recent NASA research, there could have been geo-electrical events on earth that were previously not considered possible: is continental drift an incorrectly interpreted event? Oceans virtually devoid of water, a Mediterranean that dried up, even the presence of hippos on islands such as Cyprus and other phenomena are scenarios that are not to be explained by our world view and currently observable events. The incredible claim advanced by the best-selling author of this book, that the Amazon formerly originated out of the Sahara and fed into the Pacific, was already confirmed scientifically while the book was in press. Whoever is interested in the origins and development of our planet, as well as our present biosphere, won't be able to extract himself from the fascination of this logical demonstration of evidence and will see the earth's history with completely new eyes.

Book Statistics of Earth Science Data

Download or read book Statistics of Earth Science Data written by Graham J. Borradaile and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the reviews: "All in all, Graham Borradaile has written and interesting and idiosyncratic book on statistics for geoscientists that will be welcome among students, researchers, and practitioners dealing with orientation data. That should include engineering geologists who work with things like rock fracture orientation measurements or clast alignment in paleoseismic trenches. It won’t replace the collection of statistics and geostatistics texts in my library, but it will have a place among them and will likely be one of several references to which I turn when working with orientation data.... The text is easy to follow and illustrations are generally clear and easy to read..."(William C. Haneberg, Haneberg Geoscience)

Book Unsettled Updated and Expanded Edition

Download or read book Unsettled Updated and Expanded Edition written by Steven E. Koonin and published by BenBella Books. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this updated and expanded edition of climate scientist Steven Koonin’s groundbreaking book, go behind the headlines to discover the latest eye-opening data about climate change—with unbiased facts and realistic steps for the future. "Greenland’s ice loss is accelerating." "Extreme temperatures are causing more fatalities." "Rapid 'climate action' is essential to avoid a future climate disaster." You've heard all this presented as fact. But according to science, all of these statements are profoundly misleading. With the new edition of Unsettled, Steven Koonin draws on decades of experience—including as a top science advisor to the Obama administration—to clear away the fog and explain what science really says (and doesn't say). With a new introduction, this edition now features reflections on an additional three years of eye-opening data, alternatives to unrealistic “net zero” solutions, global energy inequalities, and the energy crisis arising from the war in Ukraine. When it comes to climate change, the media, politicians, and other prominent voices have declared that “the science is settled.” In reality, the climate is changing, but the why and how aren’t as clear as you’ve probably been led to believe. Koonin takes readers behind the headlines, dispels popular myths, and unveils little-known truths: Despite rising greenhouse gas emissions, global temperatures decreased from 1940 to 1970 Models currently used to predict the future do not accurately describe the climate of the past, and modelers themselves strongly doubt their regional predictions There is no compelling evidence that hurricanes are becoming more frequent—or that predictions of rapid sea level rise have any validity Unsettled is a reality check buoyed by hope, offering the truth about climate science—what we know, what we don’t, and what it all means for our future.

Book The Human History Mistake

  • Author : Hans-Joachim Zillmer
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 142692352X
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book The Human History Mistake written by Hans-Joachim Zillmer and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our ancestors didn't live in trees, and apes never turned into humans. In The Human History Mistake, German bestselling author Hans-Joachim Zillmer has compiled factual material and empirical facts from all over the world proving that Charles Darwin's evolution theory is a myth. For more than thirty years, Zillmer has concentrated on investigating contentious findings and inconsistencies in the images of the world, recording numerous sensational discoveries and showing that documenting the anthropogenesis must be changed. In The Human History Mistake, Zillmer points to numerous finds from the Stone Age that are far younger than previously thought. The skulls of Neanderthal man and of people from the Paleolithic age must be made "younger" by as much as 27,000 years to the age of a few thousand or even hundreds of years. This science book rejects the ideas of macroevolution, but instead demonstrates that microevolution plays a much larger role in the creation of new species. Accompanied by sixty-nine photos and forty-nine illustrations, The Human History Mistake shows that the history of mankind must be rewritten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the statement that crude oil and natural gas are running out has a profound influence on the world economic strategies and on world politics as well as on the future of all humankind. But is this scientific conception of the world totally wrong? This is a must-read book! The renewed interest in the planets that resulted during the 2000s from the space probe investigations caused by Hans-Joachim Zillmer to think about the origin of planetary bodies and the various volatile substances of their atmospheres. Scientists are surprised and have no lucid explanation that abundant hydrocarbons even occur on comets and as already proofed on other planets or its moons. In this book is described that this volatile substances on planetary bodies are not of biology origin. These inorganic components of the Earth's mantle are continually out gassing toward the surface by geological and mechanical forces. Our planet would be replete with methane and we are not running out of petroleum? The energy crises would be over. There are many other reasons for wanting to understand the principle of operation of our solar system with the energy supply of planetary bodies. Suppose someone claimed that life on Earth started below the surface of our planet and if we find extraterrestrial life it is likely to be within, but not on, other planets. Darwin's theory of macroevolution must be rewritten. This heretic science book rejects the ideas of conventional geology, geophysics and astronomy, but instead demonstrates in layman's terms how the Earth originated and where the continents, the ocean and the atmosphere came from. This highly exciting and controversial German bestselling book The Energy Mistake shows that the history of Earth must also be replaced. We see a brilliant thinker as he develops a revolutionary view about the fundamental workings of our planet and the solar systems. This is a must-read book

Download or read book Scienceblind written by Andrew Shtulman and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans are born to create theories about the world--unfortunately, they're usually wrong, and keep us from understanding the world as it really is Why do we catch colds? What causes seasons to change? And if you fire a bullet from a gun and drop one from your hand, which bullet hits the ground first? In a pinch we almost always get these questions wrong. Worse, we regularly misconstrue fundamental qualities of the world around us. In Scienceblind, cognitive and developmental psychologist Andrew Shtulman shows that the root of our misconceptions lies in the theories about the world we develop as children. They're not only wrong, they close our minds to ideas inconsistent with them, making us unable to learn science later in life. So how do we get the world right? We must dismantle our intuitive theories and rebuild our knowledge from its foundations. The reward won't just be a truer picture of the world, but clearer solutions to many controversies-around vaccines, climate change, or evolution-that plague our politics today.
